Im a trumpet 🎺 player of over 35 years here! I bought my first Getzen because of Doc. All of these people talk about the high flying players like Sandoval, Maynard and many others and to me squealing out out of pitch notes doesn't do it for me,but Doc is the best technical player that I have ever heard and I will put that up against anyone and he has a rich sound unlike anyone else I have ever heard. I have met him a couple times and he is so down to earth and he is fantastic live and he's still playing today thank God he's still with us!

Thanks. I agree, particularly about the trend to substitute screeching atmospherics for uplifting music. Doc always insists on turning trumpet fundamentals and the written score into MUSIC not mechanics. Also, Doc’s profound tonality and emphasis on making the sound sizzle always made his notes above the staff seem much higher than what was written….that is a unique trademark!

Well I heard him play this in 81 in my city Richmond I sat there in awe. I have said this about several of these concertos written for Doc. I’ve never heard anyone else with the ability to do this.

Doc does not play this like a classical trumpet player would

Maybe so. But, it was written for Doc and I cannot imagine a symphonic trumpeter who would attempt to perform this piece.
