Doc Severinsen Masterclass (revised) - Feb. 18, 2015

Doc Severinsen masterclass, about 45 min of the 2 hour presentation. Doc starts off with some mouthpiece info, followed by a short tune, a question and answer period, then closes with some blues. Great session!

This is one of the best if not the best trumpet players. Man he still plays at 93 now! When I started watching him in High School he was already 60 years old and playing awesome! Gives me hope at my age 50! Great Video, Thanks for sharing this!

When Doc speaks of buzzing the mouthpiece for an hour, he is telling the truth. I've worked with him in shows twice, and each time I would walk by his dressing room I would hear him buzzing away. Then after a while I would hear him use various pedagogy with the instrument.

I've had more than a few students that had trouble just putting the horn up to their lips, take a breath and play. It really is that simple! As trumpet students and players we do tend to over complicate things!!!

Doc., you can do it right with a Bundy, Maynard could do it with a Holton without his special designed trumpet (Bix, Cat Anderson,, Cootie Williams, Roy E., Harry J., Bunny B., Dizzy, Lee Morgan, Red Rodney; some had especially designed horns) My point is, get a horn that blows easy with a good tone, a horn that blows hard with a bad tone should be made into a serving tray. I'm a upper-back crippled trombone player that knows you need to get the right mouthpiece & get an easy blowing horn. Designer made or high-end horns are window dressing.

Aw geez. Way to cut off his telling of the history of the development of his Getzen Eterna Severinsen Model. Nice goin. This is one of the most important parts of his talk! The Getzen years produced some of the greatest playing he has ever done. Is there any way to hear the rest of this? I own a 1963 prototype that Getzen built for him on which he performed and recorded with for many years. He played it on the Tonight Show. I would really like to hear the rest of this history and how these amazing horns evolved. And yeah, I have the Destino III by Shires also.

Unfortunately the way that I was trying to hold my phone inconspicuously in the front row it inadvertently stopped recording a couple times. I was also trying to conserve the battery and may have stopped it. He said that the Getzen was not a great horn initially until they changed the lead pipe, and then it didn't sell well. After they increased the price it sold better!

Played a Silver Getzen Severinsen in High School circa 1974.. Band Director ordered the horn especially for me....great memories. Bright beautiful horn....a joy to play.

A while back, when I first saw this, it seems I remember it was in two parts, and was longer. Then, later on I looked it up again, and it was this "revised" version. What was revised about it? Just that now it's one part? Too bad, it stops at a really crucial point where he's describing the development of the Getzen horn.
