@ninos12883 жыл бұрын
Practitioners of both profession are doctors and follow relatively similar curriculum the only difference is that dentists are specialists of the mouth area just like cardiologist are specialists of cardiovascular system. The Studies have shown that a lot of general body health problems do start first in the mouth so more often than you think a dentist would save you life by noticing first signes of disease where as a general physicien won t even notice
@1mol8313 жыл бұрын
But then why make dental/medical school separate?
@sagnikdas47322 жыл бұрын
@@1mol831 see dentistry is a surgical specialty that requires special skill set. They can perform minor surgery just after graduation like third molar extraction, small cysts of jaws etc. All Dental problems requires surgery as its primary treatment. Even a cavity needs a filling it can't be cured with meds. Rct extraction are all surgical in nature. Whereas a physician has to specialise in surgery before he can do surgery. A dentist has to read radiographs without help of a radiologist and has to see Pediactric patients as well as has to prescribe medicine. So dentistry was separated in 1800s with the opening of first dental school in Baltimore usa. And it was opened by a group of physician who operated on mouth.
@1mol8312 жыл бұрын
@@sagnikdas4732 So its basically a fast track surgery pathway. And technically dentistry could be a specialization taken after medical school. Although it seems the demand makes it high enough to be its own field altogether. (probably similar to how mental health stuff is starting or is being its own field atm.)
@sagnikdas47322 жыл бұрын
When someone says physician knows everything and can treat everything... it is totally wrong. A general physician may identify certain diseases like eye problem he will refer him to an ophthalmologist/eye doctor it will be illegal for him to treat him. Similarly if he diagnose a patient having periodontal or abcess he will refer him to a dentist. Dentist are not less than any specialist and are not auxiliary to any specialty. A neurosurgeon will have to visit an oral and maxface surgeon(specialist dentist) if he breaks his jaw or tmj.

Oral surgery for dentistry is crazy you do the 4 years of dental school and then after you compete and you get in they go thru 4 years of medical school and that’s why they make a good pay check. I’ve considered that route but I’m friggin 41 and I’ll owe the Navy four years and I doubt they’d let me go thru medical school to be an oral surgeon out of their pocket. It would probably be out of my pocket namely the GI Bill I got from my time as an enlisted Corpsman along with loans. If I was in my 30’s I’d probably consider that.

Oh please stop this nonsense. Medical and dental training are NOT the same. Dentists have no clue what they don't know. Why is it that dentists are always trying to pretend they are more than who they are? You are not allowed to diagnose ANY systemic diseases. They make that very clear in school. Your job is to fix teeth; drill, fill and bill. That's why you chose dentistry over medicine. Or maybe you couldnt get into med school so you carry this inferiority complex with you through out your entire career telling people you know just as much as a medical doctor. But you don't. You have no clue how to even use a stethoscope. You wouldn't know where to listen, and even if you did you wouldnt know the normal heart sound from abnormal heart sounds. You have no idea how to diagnose pulmonary or renal pathology. You have no clue about what the normal lab values are, which tests indicate organ dysfunction or what tests to order even if you are staring at the lab sheet in front of you. So stop pretending you know more than you actually do. If you want to act like a physician, go to med school. Stop this nonsense of dentists are equal to medical doctors. No you are NOT! All you know is how to drill teeth. You don't even recongnize half the meds your patients are on. The only meds you know are amoxicillin and ibuprofen. You can't read ekgs, chest xrays, CT scans, or where to palpate the abdomen to look for certain things, like murphys signs or mcburney signs. You have no clue about so many things, physiologically or pharmalogically. So you are NOT a doctor in the sense of knowing about medicine. Optometrist, pharmacist, and podiatrist don't pretend to be anything they are not. But dentists are the only ones with inferiority complex going around pretending to know as much as medical doctors. One time I heard a dentist say tylenol is an NSAID. That alone should tell you who they are. Enough said.

Actually this is a common misconception. As a dental student our course of study requires us to know anatomy and physiology as well as pharmacology for the entire body. The body is composed of many complex and interrelated systems. To treat the mouth as an isolated uninvolved region is ignorant. Ask anyone who has diabetes or heart disease. Your oral health is essential to your overall health.
@hannahperkins35233 жыл бұрын
By this same logic an eye doctor, podiatrist, OB/GYN or cardiac surgeon isn’t a doctor/physician bc they only focus on one region of the body. This is obviously incorrect. The reason dentists don’t have to go to med school is because dentists began historically as surgeons and formed a separate society from medicine out of pride. Modern dentists still diagnose and treat as physicians do. It is unfortunate this distinction has led people to see their oral health as less important.

@@hannahperkins3523 before one becomes an ob gyn or cardiac surgeon or dermatologist, you have to do general medicine. Every doctor can manage hypertension, basic diabetes, resuscitate a crashing patient etc. The same can’t be said of dentistry. They are both vital professions but why make such a ridiculous comparison? Today I operated on a handful of patients and all surgeries were life saving. This is common for doctors. Perspective and honesty. I would want my kids to be dentists. Far easier life. Less responsibility and significantly less training time. Doctors save lives, dentists don’t. In my country, doctors all out earn dentists somewhere between 2 and 20 times. Plus in the hospital, dentists get no respect. The doctors call them to clean teeth for bad plaque or for gum inspections prior to cancer treatment but they are not considered on the same scale as the doctors or given any respect by patients. It’s sad but true.
