The funniest part of this video is Doc's guitar has dots on the neck and Tony's doesn't.

Made more amusing since Doc is blind. :)

RIP, Tony. About the guitars in this clip, Doc's may be the same Gallagher he played and talked about on the Circle album cut in '70 or '71. Gallagher was a maker in Wartrace, TN, and his dreadnoughts were commercially available. Tony's is a Martin copy of his iconic 1935 Martin D-28 complete with bound neck, pickguard, and larger than regular sound hole. See his liner notes about this guitar in the CD "Tony Rice The Bluegrass Guitar Collection." He thought so much of this guitar that its serial number, 58597, is incorporated into the title art on the cover. There is a picture of the guitar slung over his shoulder inside showing that it had no dots. The copy may still be available from Martin as one of its signature guitars.

Further to my reply, see article from Fretboard Journal that explains the eccentricities of the instrument-no dots, bound neck, enlarged sound hole and more:kzbin.info?stzid=Ugw2FSNXjN1paqM0xD14AaABAg&event=comments&redir_token=QUFFLUhqbE5ySXBnRmZLTjlTTXUxNXRvZ2dveWlHMTFWQXxBQ3Jtc0ttclA4NW9BYkkwclVqc1JHdmJHR0ZxUnhJZ21lZFpOMDBoTFUtdVFBekhKeUhkV214VU13V2NkZ2hnSDVIeXdOd3FLaHNoQlotYmlCTXBSWDNTXzR1NGJZQS1vckpxdk52ZFFEMFU1dXlzaUpXejhlYw%3D%3D&q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.fretboardjournal.com%2Ffeatures%2F58957-tony-rice-and-his-holy-grail-martin-d-28%2F

They played the music as it was lived, the song represents a moment in life. So vivid so raw. So many times it has been performed recognized and recorded. This was from a blind Virtuoso who had perfect and deeply personal relationship to these songs and a musical genius as an an amplifier, yet nothing was lost… it’s as the day it was written!

Thanks you for that. I was reading my way through the comments hoping to learn (pardon my ignorance) who this third fine guitar player is. Didn't think I should have to ask at the bottom. Yes, all three play their own style. Sean's licks were quite colorful. Now the only player of the three alive. R.I.P. Tony Rice
