Is the 12/Clara arc the best era of Doctor Who? I don't know. But IMHO, Capaldi is the best actor we've ever had in the role, and Jenna Coleman is the best actor we've had as a companion. So even when/if the writing was subpar, you always knew you were going to get award-worthy acting week in and week out. What a time.

Not enough hangers on (family/friends) outside of the Doctor. So that made her thinly drawn. That was one of the main complaints I remember reading about her back in the day. I just think she was too pretty and haters gotta hate. Her story was never really grounded in normalcy. Clara was the companion that grew to be the most like the Doctor....and died for it. He just didn't let her death stop her existence.

I loved Clara so much it hurt to see her get murdered needlessly by that damned raven. The Doctor bringing her back was just needless hope. Technically, she's still travelling time and space with Ashild'r by the time of Ncuti Gatwa's Doctor. However, she's still canonically dead as shown in Twice Upon a Time. I would've just given Clara an ending where she simply left the Doctor to join Kate Stewart at UNIT. That would allow us to see her again and have her eventually realize that becoming like the Doctor was a stupid desire.
