Great Video! Could you do an analysis on how Paulo Costa’s head kick didn’t knock-Out Robert Whittaker, at UFC 298? From a biomechanical perspective, could it be that it was because the kick made downward contact with Whittaker’s orbital whilst he was suspended in the air? Perhaps the downward energy was dissipated in the air as Whittaker was landing, as opposed to being planted on the ground?

Another important aspect of Topuria's rear right hook is how he delivered it accurately. He lines up Volks chin with his left hand before landing the right hook. You can see Topuria brush the exact spot he hits. Once he felt where Volks face was it became very instinctual to deliver it accurately. Some might say this is an overhand right but judging by the positioning of his body and hand it looks like a rear hook which carries an unbelievable amount of torque.

@Sam-tg6ee10 ай бұрын
As far as I know it comes down to a few things. The biggest one is the unexpected shots. If a fighter isn't expecting a shot, even if it's "light" it can still do lots of damage. On the contrary, bombs thrown can be eaten if the fighter is expecting the punch and is ready to brace and/or roll with it. The placement of the shot is also a big factor. Shots that land right on the button or temple can be devastating even if they appear light. Another factor is how much damage the fighter has already taken throughout his career (and the fight itself) that lessens his ability to take shots. Last thing is that everyone's chin is different. Look at max holloway lmao.

I try to take note of the way you or any MD articulate and try to implement it when it seems appropriate. All so random right now but hey 🤷🏻♂😂

Man from a lifelong boxing fan, i hope all ufc fighters take a look a volk and izzy. These schedules are destroying them! Boxing champs fight a couple times a year, it prolongs their career and builds up fights and fighters more. Ufc does the opposite and we see in live time these declining in just a couple years. Tony, Jan, and just about anyone that fights 4 times a year. It’s probably not even the fights but the training and constant damage. Boxers take time to heal!

Doctor, I have a theory: Once you been knocked out chances of to be knocked next time are increasing, because your brain once shut off to prevent damage and next time it tries to do the same, maybe even earlier. that's why the fighters are never the same after being KOed once, right?

I remember being in school and they would teach us that the mechanism of a knockout was likely due to too much movement between the brain stem/hemispheres/corpus callosum....which is probably true to an extent; now I think they're talking about it in terms of deformation of the neural cell bodies and loss of neurotransmitters due to the deformation throwing the brain into a energy/metabolic crisis.
