I have this and it is honestly pure hell. If you try and tell people close to you how it affects you they either mock you or they’re understanding……but they’ll only understand for so long! It eventually causes fights in relationships of any and all kinds. The rage, not anger, but pure unadulterated rage it causes in me has always made me feel like something is truly wrong with me. It’s life altering, from trying to take a test and someone’s chewing gum by you to grieving at a funeral and someone smacks their mouth while they’re talking. I’m going to end up in orange someday, due to this, I just know it ugh. We gotta find a cure STAT 😩

@julielemoine3954
@julielemoine3954 8 ай бұрын
It’s not as disturbing if it’s me. There have been times that I’m eating something and occasionally I’ll make some kind of noise and it’ll irk me but it’s rare. For some reason it’s a different noise in my head when I’m chewing. I don’t know why or if it’s because I do my best not to ever smack, slosh around food in my mouth or chew gum. I have no clue but it doesn’t tripper me the same way. I had to of been very young when it started; it’s been going on for as long as I can remember. I always thought it was due to me being sa’d, because it was done by an old man that made smacking sounds 24/7 and I was too young to remember when that started happening, as well. I’m guessing that’s not what started it though. There’s a lot of people that haven’t had that happen to them but they also get this rage.

I have it too and it's hell. It's hard to associat with people and i always turned down a dinner party with friends because of this.But amazingly, it doesn't happen while eating with my wife though. It started when i was in my teens but don't know exactly when. As i grew older it began to intensify and sometimes i can't almost control myself. I always walked out of a restaurant when someone who sat next to our table chewed, slurps and smacks loudly. If i didn't walks out i was afraid that i'll loose control and threw something at that person. I really want a cure or something to suppress this. I thought that it will go away as i grow older but it doesn't. Something is really wrong with me and i need help.

I’ve heard misophonia is related to the flight or fight reflex? For me, it’s either full-on rage or actual despair and terror. I’ve learned to cope with music, singing, humming, and even just politely stepping away until the person has ceased eating. Weird thing is, it NEVER bothers me when it’s an animal making the noises. And I can tell without looking too. There’s this resonance in sound coming from an adult human and that of any other animal. Also, kids/babies chewing don’t get to me as much either. So bizarre.

I don’t know what the motivation behind this question is but before you tell me I shouldn’t have had three kids if I knew I had Misophonia, 1) I didn’t plan on having three children-I unexpectedly conceived twins with my second pregnancy 2) I could not have anticipated that a global pandemic would mean being under lockdown 24/7 for an extended period on my own with three under three which certainly amplified things, 3) it’s impossible to fully comprehend what having children day to day is like or what your particular children will be like (how loud/active they’ll be) no matter how much experience you have beforehand and 4) misophonia is only one of many factors that is involved in my everyday experience of parenting and there are many other factors that make the overall experience both challenging and incredibly rewarding.

@markmuller7962 maggie already explained it very well, but I'd just like to mention that misophonia is a new thing in healthcare (at least where I'm from). It's still really hard to get diagnosed with it. When I got diagnosed with autism 3 years ago they still put misophonia under the autism label even though it's a completely separate thing. And another thing, for me it got a lot worse during my pregnancies. Before that it was mostly eating, chewing, drinking and talking sounds, but since my pregnancies the list of sounds that trigger me is endless. Since misophonia wasn't a diagnosed thing when I was pregnant, let alone midwives/Ob-gyn who had knowledge about this, there wasn't anybody telling me that pregnancy could do this.

I used to run a therapy group for teenagers, and one brief member was very severely autistic and also had severe misophonia towards the voice of one of the members. Like she was on the verge of tears because it was so unpleasant to her... but obviously it's hard to have group therapy when one member's voice triggers another. The girl's mom agreed to find a new therapy group, because the one whose voice they hated hearing had been there for months and had really fit in with the rest of the group.

Yes! I’m on the Autism spectrum and thus have sensory sensitivity. Now pair that with good old misophonia; Rage that only my medicine can contain at even the smallest sounds. Usually it’s eating, keyboard clicking, tapping sounds, writing sounds and other minor sounds. For people without this: imagine nails on a chalkboard or a siren going off right next to your head. It's like a combination of an unpleasant tensing through your whole body and a fight/flight trigger. There's no thought other than "MAKE THE NOISE STOP". In people who are unaware of this condition, it can absolutely lead to blaming whoever/ whatever is making the sound. Be kind to your misophobes out there. They might not understand yet that having this feeling isnt normal and other people arent triggering them on purpose. It takes time and understanding to figure out what helps

First and foremost, it requires people around you to even begin to care about you at the slightest. In my experience, people around me KNOW about my condition, they KNOW it's a physiological response I cannot control, yet they still don't give a fk and get extremely irritated when I dare to ask them politely to please close your mouth when chewing.
@NarwhalsGoBoom

@@olmostgudinaf8100 I get it from both perspectives. It's hard having an auditory trigger other people don't have, and also it can seem arbitrary changing a behavior that doesn't bother most of everyone else. What matters is what you do about it. I know it sucks because it feels like a "them problem" - "if they just stopped chewing loud, I wouldn't be annoyed". But you can't control if other people understand or change their behavior for you. You can control putting in headphones, turning on the TV, or just leaving if people can't handle the accommodations you need. If anyone's misophonia is so bad that nothing can neutralize the sounds, I highly reccomend exposure therapy because avoiding the triggering sounds can make it worse when you encounter them.

You can adjust for this person but it's hard because it's how you naturally walk. You're going to mess up , like a lot, because it's so natural you don't ever have to think about it but with this person. At some point, you'd probably want them to just not look at you or find some other solution. I'm not arguing against you. We should all try to be the kindest to eachother that we can be and have empathy. People are going to mess up, forget, or not get why they have to change a behavior even for the people closest to them. It sucks. It's also very human. We can remind them, repeat our needs over and over until they hopefully get it. And/or we can try to find ways that work for ourselves and the people around us.

Although misophonia might be common it really varies from person to person. It can get REAL bad for some people. Somehow my coping mechanism is mimicking the sound, it never made sense to me but I always had a strong urge to do so. I remember so many of my emotional breakdowns. You end up resorting to self harm when you can't get away from the trigger. It's extremely frustrating and has genuinely made me upset and angry unlike anything else. I've had it for around 10 years now (I'm almost 17). Mine was especially at its peak during the pandemic, made my mental health just terrible. It's somewhat ruined relationships with my family too. The sounds literally drove me insane and they still do although I've found better coping mechanisms now and eliminated some of the daily triggers I had (wait that sounds wrong I promise I didn't harm anybody I just uh- 💀). Anyways Dr Karan I'm so glad you made a video about this! I remember requesting it way back. I know there's many people like me out there, it was much needed. To everyone suffering, I sincerely hope you get better ❤️:(( P.S. I really hate how people think it's made up, as if I manifested an illness off the internet but at the same time I can't blame them. I've realised it's hard to believe when you don't suffer from it. I only found out this is a real condition not too long ago. Before that I was just deemed crazy. People end up mocking you and repeating the triggers on purpose when you try to stop it. Tell you to get locked up in psychiatric hospital when you try to reach out. A real struggle especially when it's a family member. The easiest way I've been able to put the triggers into words is that they give you the entirely opposite reaction as you would have when you hear a sound like a song you absolutely love for example. It's gotta be one that gets you smiling INSTANTLY. The dopamine, adrenaline rush or whatever. The opposite has usually been my reaction to misophonia, hard to hold in the tears sometimes.

You might also experience echolalia and be repeating the sounds because of it, at least it kinda sounds like that might be happening and could explain the urge to mimick the sound in order to cope Also, I can't even begin to imagine having such strong echolalia. Mine is very specific to chewing sounds and sounds similar to that (like stirring noodles with sauce) and first make me feel super weird and uncomfortable (just like most sensory triggers do for me) and then lead to rage and the urge to hurt the person making the sound to make it stop (I promise I never actually hurt anyone though). I hope you'll continue finding ways to better deal with it (one thing I've found for myself is a good pair of ANC headphones, they help both my misophonia and general auditory sensory sensitivity, I don't leave the house without them anymore), as well as that you find people to be around more who understand and don't mock you but help accommodate you. It's a real issue and while it might not be visible that doesn't mean it can't have a real impact, to a point of being disabling to some

I’m not generally a very angry person but when my misophonia is triggered I become filled with blood boiling rage. I’d never lash out at someone or do anything about it, but the urge to flip a table is very strong lol. It’s like someone is chewing/breathing loudly into a megaphone INSIDE MY EAR CANAL! You sound like you might also have misophonia, if you consistently have those feelings of anger towards the same sounds. I feel like people who are autistic are more likely to have misophonia. It’s strange - i was a dancer and played the piano for 15 years and have always loved CERTAIN Music. In fact, certain sounds that I find extremely beautiful can actually cause me to cry. Despite this, during School, Uni, etc, even the sound of the guy sitting next to me in a lecture, breathing & whistling through his nose; people clicking their pens in & out; tapping their feet; etc made me want to shove my pen through their temples, even though I am NOT an angry person & I’ve never acted violently toward ANYTHING (objects or people), in my life)! I am also incredibly disgusted & feel nauseated when i hear gross things like the sound of someone moving the food around in their mouth while they chew. It’s also uncomfortable to hear music or sound that is off-rhythm, off-key, or if the music sounds ugly & unpleasant. I would be much happier to hear a beautiful song i love on ‘Repeat’ than listen to other music that sounds ugly.

I know many people with ADHD randomly get that, but don't have it always. So I would assume that attention control problems - so not being able to focus on other things, when you want/need to - could be playing into it. And maybe also general emotional dysregulation. CBT being also the best therapy form for ADHD (in combination with meds for maximum effect) also points in the direction, that the problems may be somehow overlapping.
@x0xStockingsx0x

its actually (usually!) overstimulation that causes this in adhd patients as well as emotional lability and dysregulatory problems associated with adhd. Not all patients have these symptoms, so they arent always mentioned in convos about adhd. This is a different mechanism than autism-associated (or primary?) misophonia, so technically you are wrong but the symptoms and connectivity issues associated with misophonia might be implicated in adhd so you could be partially correct. In ADHD patients, if they have a sound sensitivity due to their adhd alone, it can also be due to frustration while theyre trying everything they can to focus (and the sound is distracting.) People can have both adhd and misophonia though... but misophonia means it affects you every day, or at least often enough for it to be considered a separate syndrome. If you have adhd and get misophonia symptoms occasionally, consider why sound bothers you in these situations... we researchers could use your input.

Please help her. Trust me it's really bad if only you knew how misophonia makes you feel. It's not her fault. The last thing she needs is a family that's not willing to believe her condition or finding it annoying when she's the one suffering. Be supportive and get her the treatment she may need :(

@@unravel9716 She got ear plugs but she refuse to use them. she wont try some headphones. she is eating in the living room if dad or brother is eating in the kitchen, Dont know how to help her. We didnt know what it was first. it started a few years ago. But we now know what it is. but people here where we live would say that she need to be in a hospital for mental problems. But thats just wrong. it would not help. we tell her to eat in her room or some other room where dad and brother are not eating. What else is there to do? but some days she can be in the same room and eat at the same time as our brother with no problems at all. But the annoying part is not that she have problems with the sounds of people eating, its when someone opens a game to the PlayStation and she start to scream, or when someone says something and she somehow thing its similar to smacking And some days it seams like just sitting there listening real closely and scream for many sounds that are not similar to eating or smacking. other days she busy and dont behave like that.

Both my mom and sister have been singing with each other for years and years, and only like 5 - 6 years ago i started getting extremely annoyed and sensitive to their singing. Even if they were just humming i felt that i needed to cry very hard. And ive been dealing with that ever since. Now whenever i hear them sing its mostly depending on my mood on how i react to it, some days i can walk around the house and they’ll just be singing at the top of there lungs and other days i will hear one little peep from them and i will just wanna slam my door shut and turn the fan on max to drown out the noise and ill be mad for about 5 - 10 mins. When i was younger i would contemplate suicide because of how sensitive and unprepared I was to deal with it. As ive gotten older i contemplated whether i was autistic or not or had some other mental disorder but thanks to this video that wasnt quite the case. I finally got some noise canceling headphones for Christmas and there pretty cool!

Raising my hand right here! I bought loop ear plugs and it helps me deal with this in public settings. Being a mostly functional member of society is the only reason why I don’t go nuts on some people. Chewing; breathing loud; smacking gum, sucking on teeth, slurping, phones on speaker, sound on, bass, low pitched mechanical noises, are the worst of the offenders. I don’t want these things to bother me because I could deal with public settings with a lot less anxiety.

Less that and more, "Chew over there or I might try to rip off my ears and/or your face." I'm not a violent person, but the sound of people chewing makes me have to fight a sudden surge of incredibly brutal rage. I never have, and never will, express that anger, but it isn't something I can necessarily help feeling.

People with misophonia rarely tell other people that a sound is driving them nuts because they don’t want to be rude to the people they like. That, and some jerks will deliberately make gross noises even louder and closer if you tell them. We either make other noises or find an excuse to be somewhere else.

People say I'm heartless because I absolutely can't stand to be near a crying baby or sometimes even a babbling one, but it is severely irritating to me physically. It feels like a dull pressing headache in the back of my head near my neck. I have to remove myself from situations with babies sometimes because I can't concentrate on anything else.

I get that it's an unreasonable response - trust me. I am embarrassed at the blind rage I feel over hearing people chew. But my god, it would be SO MUCH LESS AUDIBLE if people chewed with their mouths closed! I have four roommates and three of them chew with their mouths open. These are all people in their early 30s. I'm just so appalled, but when I tried to gently say something to one of them (yes, I was irritated, but I'm also extremely conflict-avoidant), he instantaneously exploded at me. So I've never brought it up again.

@@HighLevelBoss Pretty much exactly as you described: cars, machines, neighbor's music or sound systems with bass, neighbors talking loudly. Essentially any intrusive, invasive sound outside of my "bubble" if that makes sense (I'm a quiet, introverted person, very sensitive and aware of outside forces, always have been). But the absolute WORST for me is the sound of dirt bikes/ATVs/motorcycles/anything of this nature and loud, modified vehicles. For some reason, these sounds make me absolutely see red and I cannot explain it or control it. Sometimes hearing these things feel like the end of the world and really that's so ridiculous sounding typing it out, but that's how it feels in the moment. Does this sound like anything you've experienced? I have Loop earplugs that have helped tremendously but they don't block out everything so I'm thinking of trying proper noise cancelling earbuds or headphones. Also trying to be mindful of how I'm feeling in the moment when I'm getting so bothered and trying to rationally breathe through it but I have to admit that's very hard!

@@afm9405 yeah I'm exactly as you've put it, where in the world are you may I ask? I tend to verbally swear abuse at motorbikes that jolt me when I'm outside it's like they pull anger out of me and I'm not an angry guy I once lived next door to a neighbour who had this awful noisy flue for their boiler which would drive me mad when in the kitchen as I could hear it. Just that low frequency rumble literally feels like it's killing me which I can't handle. Just to add buses idle in traffic is the exact low pitch noise that gets me the most but just like yourself anything intrusive gets me where I literally can't even think straight until it's gone
