I was excited to see this reaction video. I've been dying to see a therapist's view on the pickle Rick episode. Especially after during this time, there was a part of the fandom that disliked the therapist's analysis and brushed it off like Beth and Rick. Which was missing the whole point that they're people you shouldn't want to be.
@theperson85393 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the therapist section of the episode is handled infinitely better than I remember, a genuinely clever way to surmise all of the immediate issues that were going on with the family at the time. I think the narrative has sort of gone up and down in recent seasons, I mean, everything besides the incest baby was something I could still appreciate, but I think a lot of this still carries over, considering Morty’s dependency on Rick. I think the part that makes Rick and Morty have fans that are so aggressive to anything that doesn’t serve their delusions about the characters is that the self awareness in the show is a great deal more subtle than it is in Harmon’s other memorable show: Community. Community was constantly self evaluating and was always aware of what it was and what it’s existence meant to its fans and to an intellectual capacity. Harmon proved on that show that he is one of the best (Psychological-Dramatically influenced) Comedy writer and creator we’ve ever seen, stringing together brilliant concepts that are often intensely crass and building them into a complex narrative that follows an ever growing structure that’s just off in the background. Rick and Morty is brilliant too, it just doesn’t wear its complexity and nuance on its sleeve like Community did, and as much as the show seems to be all about how smart it is, it just isn’t about hyping itself up. More than anything, its a lot more about the constant chaotic conundrum that serves as the fallout that follows the hype… and the hype is just too strong at times to look past. That’s why so many people think that the season 4 and 5 have been a step down, they arrived faster and they made the hype thinner. Some of us just don’t want to look past the hype… which is why people don’t want to let Rick and Morty naturally progress into the fallout phase of the narrative, which is perhaps why it really has to.

It's really ironic how this episode was the one where they hit the audience over the head with all the toxicity in the family and how unwell Rick is, but it's also the episode toxic fans got fixated on as they proceeded to not take the obvious message about mental health on board Edit: Just checked this after two months and there are more replies than I realized. I want to add that I don't think finding humour in this episode makes you toxic (it's a well-written comedy lol that's what it's there for), just that the fans of this show who are toxic often focused on the wrong aspect of this episode and seem to fixate on this episode the most when they idolise Rick, which is ironic when it's one of the episodes that most tries to tell the audience not to do that And no I don't think you need to analyze every piece of media that crosses your path, but it's a good idea to not be totally passive either. This video is already about a doctor analyzing the show in the first place, so I assume if you watched this video you already know that Also tbh as long as you're not a douche I wasn't even talking about you in my comment ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It is pretty great that the show continuously gets people to demonstrate why we need the messages of the show. The central theme of this episode felt to me, when I watched it, that calm boring maintenance is often much more central to our lives and well-being than the big, showy moments and drama we tell stories about. Often a breakdown after an insult or failure has more to do with how much sleep your getting than how big a deal the event actually was. Rick goes on this huge, dramatic adventure where he has to overcome huge triumphs and accomplishes amazing things, but none of it really *mattered,* and he and everyone he cares about would have been better off if he had just... done the boring maintenance and gone to therapy. Meanwhile, the boring clique scenes with the therapist are the ones that *actually mattered* to their wellbeing; boring to watch, but central to the character arcs. And why do we, as a society, need to be reminded sometimes to focus on the boring but meaningful parts instead of the fun, dramatic, meme-y parts of the show? _Man in the distance yells._ "PICKLE RICK!!!" That's why.

One thing i will point out that this episode is the first time Rick ever put on a seatbelt, ever. Mind you he chases an gets chased by enemies in space.

Y'know, the bit about paranoia developing from irrelevant information is interesting. I've a habit of thinking that I'm very clever, and when I'm in a new place I tend to scan the room looking for clues to hidden stories based on (for example) "why is that pen placed there?" More often than not, I reach conclusions that can't be verified one way or the other. On rare occasions I'm spot on and impress a lot of people. I also play this game in reverse with my own home, ascribing hidden meaning and details all over the place that no one ever consciously finds.

I’m rewatching this at a time in my life where this hit harder than it did on previous watches. I’ve always been the person who said “why dwell just fix things” and thought this worked well for me. However I’m at a point where things in my life can’t be fixed but only experienced (I.e family getting older and dying) my instinct of “just fix things” hit an immovable object with this and I have had a lot of trouble trying to handle this mentally because I’m not used to situations that don’t have a fix. I just want to thank you doctor Elliott for what you do and everyone in your profession. -someone who used to scoff at therapy

Me, watching this episode: "Wow, this was great, the silly pickle stuff in the episode really is less significant than the therapist deconstructing so eloquently how Rick's deep-seated character flaws are damaging not just to himself but his whole family. I'm sure all the other "high IQ" people who supposedly watch this show will see Ms Wong as a memorable character and the episode itself as a turning point in the series." General fandom reaction: "I TURNED MYSELF INTO A PICKLE, MORTY! I'M PICKLE RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII--"

I immediately saw the metaphor of Rick becoming a Pickle is exactly that: pickled by alcoholism.

You may want to mention at some point that psychiatry is *very* different in the UK than it is in the US, or Australia, or Canada, or nearly anywhere else, because the field of psychiatry is utterly segmented and siloed. A lot of the terms you're using are UK or EU specific, and a few of have no analogues in the US or canada.

I sorta wish you could react to the whole series, analyze the minds and trauma that Rick and Morty go through, how their relationship grows and breaks, and how they're relationship changes with their family too, it would be really cool and insightful to see your opinions and thoughts

Shame he didn't pick up on that the pickle was less of a phallic reference and rather substitute for Rick's otherwise constantly referenced alcoholism.

I love your videos, you use the shows you react to to open a discussion about important psychological issues and you don't use it just say well actually therapy isn't like this, you recognise the shows aren't trying to be 100% accurate to how therapy functions and is more using an approximate understanding of therapy to tell an interesting/entertaining story and explore the show's characters. I'm not saying this just about Rick and Morty, I've watched a lot of your videos and just thought that might be what I'm picking up on. Eitherway I really like your videos and love that you both educate us and just enjoy the comedy of the shows you coved, keep it up big fan

Why a pickle? Rick is a notorious drunk/alcoholic. So, in this episode, he is not just _figuratively_ pickled.

Why a pickle? Honestly, I stopped asking questions after like… season one lol. Rick does most of this stuff drunk and/or high.

great video! i don’t understand the hate this episode got it was honestly a favorite of s3 for me. you should take a look at mr robot. it does such a good job at showing how trauma at a young age can affect someone’s mental health down the line. it also sheds light on Dissociative identity disorder and does it in a very respectful manner. keep up the good work! you just earned yourself a sub 👍🏻

Loved your break down on this episode, so I had to subscribe to see more. One question. Why is it that people don't understand why he turned himself into a pickle? I think it's so that instead of just saying, "he got himself into a bit of a pickle" it's now both literal and figuratively so. I think it's a simple genius play on the cliche. I digress, I appreciate your addition to the philosophy I have on the episode. Keep yourself kept.😊

I think my therapist does the silent start... it doesn't work for me. She's new to me - and since we have been restricted to phone sessions, we haven't actually met, and I don't feel like she understands me and I don't know how to communicate with her. It's tough. But over the phone, if things go silent, I'm just going to do something else until she asks a question 😂
@sourcererseven38583 жыл бұрын
Oh man, that's really a case of not adjusting to the situation 😆 Yeah I can't imagine that the silent treatment works over the phone.... You could just as well try it via email. Hope she figures it out. Feel free to cite my comment if it helps 😜 Or you at least have the option to switch providers if it doesn't work out mid-term.
