I think a lot of the upset isn't about Larry's death, but about Larry's life. About how his sad history hit close to so many who don't quite know how to respond to it. So they direct their feelings at Larry being dead instead.

As a long time Simpsons fan I think you nailed part of why this episode was talked about. It was an obvious shocker headline killing off character which is often lazy writing. But this end up being a pretty decent and original take from Simpsons when it comes to dealing with death which they have done a few times. As said its more relatable to people in some ways being a lonely person today. But might also consider The Simpsons been on air for 35 years, for some us we have watched it our whole lives. And many of us are kind of like Larry with Simpsons in background always being there but we also are aging with the show as well. It won't always be here.

Bleeding Gums Murphy actually did die, in season 6. I think you might have been thinking of Dr. Marvin Monroe. Other characters who have died, usually because their voice actors stopped working on the show, or passed away, were Maude Flanders, Edna Krabappel, or Krusty's Dad.

And Lisa's grief gave her the determination to share Bleeding Gum's music to the world by acquiring the last known record in town to play on local radio (which Comic Book Guy dickishly inflated the price to $500 on account of Bleeding Gums' death). And Bart buys the record for Lisa using all of his settlement money from the Krusty-O's lawsuit for causing his appendicitis. Why? Because Lisa was the only one who believed him when he said he was sick and in pain, and buying the record was him showing his love and gratitude for his sister.

It's weird I kinda got a similar impression from the episode "Homer's Enemy" where at the end he dies and no one cares, no one mourns, they show up to his funeral and just laugh at Homer.
@NobodyC13
@NobodyC13 8 ай бұрын
I don't know, it seems like a pretty apt thematic conclusion. Homer may be a foolish oaf, but he's sociable enough that anyone from drunks, celebrities, and even politicians can approach and befriend him and open him to new opportunities in life. Frank Grimes, meanwhile, may have been dealt a bad hand in life, but his obsession with being a "responsible hard worker" combined with his envy of other people's lifestyles, has either led him to forgo relationships or people are just put off by his judgemental attitude of whether they deserve or not deserve any of their successes. Homer TRIED to be nice and friendly to Grimes and take the latter's criticisms to heart, but Grimes let his envy get the best of him and became obsessed with humiliating Homer just to prove his worldview is right. The episode ends with no one one mourning for Frank Grimes, but everyone is laughing with Homer.

I feel like this was a great move from the show writers. After all the kids that used to watch the simpsons when growing up are all grown up now. Those people now are getting to that age where parents and maybe even peers are dying or approaching the period of their life where they WILL encounter grief. I feel like exploring those emotions through a cartoon is very helpful and even though there is lash back at the simpsons of "how dare they do this" same as death, death doesnt discriminate, all of us have death in common and I found myself when going through grief asking the very same question. How dare life take away this person from me.

Edna Krabappel wasn’t recast out of respect for Marcia who died of pneumonia, so the only way to get around Marcia’s death would be Edna passing away. Maggie Roswell is still alive, Maude was killed out of spite, (officially to open new avenues for storylines,) Maggie had left over a pay dispute, (connected to the cost of traveling to Los Angeles from Denver twice a week,) and been re-cast solely for the sake of killing Maude.

The other day I watched an episode of Ambulance Australia (which is the Australian version of the documentary Ambulance) and the theme was suicide during the pandemic and elderly second generation stolen generation. It had a woman who had relapsed into a weird psychiatric disease which causes her to black out and do pica, and she called because she swallowed a knife. It also had a man who tried to jump off a major bridge (that was fortified at the ground level) but allegedly didn't so ran into traffic instead. Just wondering what the former is called or if you could analyse this?

Great reaction video. Brillantly done by the authors. And yes, very sad and thought-provoking. I see why so many people would not like it. They might be flustered by how realistic and at the same time common the whole depiction was. Especially when they likely did not expect so much seriousness from a generally funny show like the Simpsons. And feel targeted, maybe. because as you said, there are way too many Larry's out there... It simply IS deeply saddening. As to Homer's defense mechanism (around 12:00) I'd say Rationalization, or some Denial?

I watch a lot of border security shows and they get a few people ingesting cocaine if all other frisk searches fail. Sometimes they have people either being suspected of an overdose (which is usually false) or once or twice someone actually having prematurely gone to the toilet. But it seems like some countries have radiologists in the airport, where others actually have to go to the hospital. Anyway they do seem to exploit people especially things like Brazilian or Columbian people with no job.

It's not in any way a derogatory phrase. It's been around for over 300 years and refers to the drinking of a type of gin by Dutch troops, who fought alongside the English during the Thirty Years’ War. As in "We're about to go into battle, hand me some of that liquid courage", which morphed into Dutch courage when referring to the gin supplied by the army. You don't need to be so professionally offended by a saying that was originally a meme (a unit of cultural information spread by imitation) which became an historical reference.
