When I was a kid back in the 1970s my brother let me read his Marvel Comics collection. Dr. Strange quickly became one of my favorite titles. Born in the trippy, psychedelic days of the 1960s and 70s, it was a reflection of its time. I thought the movie did a wonderful job recreating the feel of the comic and it is one of my favorites in the MCU.

Before the crash, Strange's assistant mentioned a colonel who was injured by experimental armor. Some people think it was a reference to Rhodes, but the timeline doesn't match. It is most likely the man injured by Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2.

Nope… run it through guys… in Endgame, when Bruce goes back to 2012 (The Battle of New York), The Ancient One tells Bruce that Stephen Strange is currently up town performing surgery and won’t be The Sorcerer Supreme for another 5 years, which puts all of this well, WELL after Iron Man 2… the reference was for Rhodes… I’d bet my hands on it

This might be one of my favorite reactions to this movie. I really like how she picked up on what makes Strange/the film unique by superhero standards- that he’s always coming up with solutions that go beyond just hitting the bad guy harder. His powerset rewards cleverness and imagination, and all his appearances build on that idea thematically.

What was a continuity pothole because at that point he was still just a surgeon not a wizard with powers and potential threat to Hydra. What's fine tbh. They didn't know yet how they were going to introduce the character but wanted the Easter egg.

Chiwetel Ejiofor was excellent as Mordo. I’ve always liked him since Four Brothers. He was perfect playing Victor Sweet. Really the whole cast was excellent in this one. It’s up there in the Marvel movies to me as one of the best cast marvel movies.

The thing that's so funny is that everybody says that it's so druggy, "gotta be on a trip." The guy most responsible for Dr. Strange was Steve Ditko, who was the original Spider-Man artist and co-creator with Stan Lee. He was a very anti-drug guy, but when he was drawing Dr. Strange and writing most of the stories, it was the favorite Marvel character for college students, in the mid 1960's. The drug culture loved him, yet Ditko was not a user. He was a strange duck, to say the least, but a genius. He was a recluse, and only a couple of photographs of him exist. He ended up having a big disagreement with Stan Lee over credit for his creations, left Marvel and created other unusual characters for other companies. He was just one of those guys who saw a completely different world and communicated it in comic form. I loved watching you react to it.

I mean, he created Blue Beetle and the Question who had a lot of longevity and fan love. The strange character he created for his personal zine was Mister A to represent his odd interpretation of Ayn Rand where all situations should be dealt with in black and white without any shades of gray. The odd interpretation many libertarians would disagree with was also, to the chagrin of his family, he never accepted checks for the Spider-Man and Dr Strange films. He fully refused money for projects he hadn't directly worked on. Being Spider-Man the box office it was he was refusing millions of dollars over the years while struggling to live out of comics way past his prime. I personally think that crosses a bit beyond ideology into just letting a corporation getting away with not paying you. After his passing, the family had been finally working arrangements with Marvel for residuals and other payments.

One of my favorite things about this movie and this part of the Marvel universe is that even though they can wield magic they still need to learn martial arts, because if someone gets close enough to you and doesn’t give you time to cast a spell then you’re going to need to fight back.

Stephen Strange and Tony Stark are VERY similar to each other, both in their brilliance and their arrogance. But of the two, I would argue that Strange is probably the most reckless and dangerous of the two. Because while Stark has access to technology that can bring absolute ruin to his own world, Strange has access to power that could destroy entire universes (see What If...?). Don't get me wrong, I enjoy both characters immensely lol, they both follow that "great power comes great responsibility" trend shared not only by Spider-Man but so many other Marvel characters. Doctor Strange in particular was one of my favorite comics as a kid, along with Silver Surfer, Hulk and Daredevil 😁

Contradictory to your statement a lot of those visuals were straight from the comic books in one of the most on point representations of the comic art from the 70s that Marvel has produced. You can literally pick up some of the original comics from the 70s and see those tripping images. So, if anyone is tripping, it's the artists from back then.

Oh seeing this at the cinema was sooo cool. Imagine those same trippy, weird visuals but up on the big screen.... so so freakin cool. I think out of ALL the Marvel TV shows and movies, this definitely has the trippiest and coolest visual effects. There's some effects in Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy 2 which come pretty close, but this is definitely the "father" of all those effects, and still the best (in my opinion). You're gonna love the movies going forward. There's gonna be some nice cameos from this movie and some characters pop up a few times around the place, so that's cool. (Won't tell you where or when). When you were comparing this to the Matrix I thought you were gonna say some nasty stuff, but glad you didn't.... really glad you appreciated it. And yeh, that scene with Ancient One passing.... very very sad. I also wish she stuck around. The actor was Tilda Swinton and she's one of my FAVOURITE actors ever. She played an Angel in Constantine and has been in so so many movies. Look up her IMDB, she's just great. Anyway, so glad you loved this. I also love it....great movie and great cast. Rachel McAdams as Dr Strange's girlfriend was great casting. She's a great actor too. :)

5:21 It's not in this reaction but when Strange is talking on the phone here and the guy tells him about the soldier with the spinal injury, he's referring to the soldier that got twisted at the waist...we saw the video clip of it in "Iron Man II" when Tony commandeered Justin Hammer's screens...Hammer says in the microphone, "I want the record to show that that soldier survived."

Shamelessly my favorite. I grew up with X-Men like your friend here did and Dr.Strange was featured in it. I researched the character a bit and just loved both the big concepts, ones you mentioned, Tibetan philosophies, metaphysics. Also it uses and the inspiration from Johnny Tremain, a favorite novel when I was in elementary. This film encapsulated all the features of that well. And of course just an outstanding cast. And yeah, they are going to meet and their egos are going to clash then go from there. I don't think that's too spoilerific but your going to love it. Everything gets paid off in time so look forward to it and enjoy the MCU ride. In retrospect the planting becomes one of the best things about all this.
