Doctor Vibe is a new app for Mac, iPad and iPhone from Sketch Audio (Blip Box, Phase Monkey). It has 3 main sections: a vinyl simulator, a compressor (word on the street is that this is modeled on the SP-303, much loved by Madlib and J-Dilla) and a section to emulate analogue to digital / digital to analogue conversion. Vulcan Compressor, a desktop plugin in the same ballpark, is $149.99.
The main thing I like is the sound - the downsampling, drive, vinyl crackle etc are lovely. There are a couple of things I don’t like. The labelling of sliders is done in a way that the label is under the slider rather than above. I find this extremely aggravating and difficult to adjust to. YMMV! The app also doesn’t resize well at small sizes inside AUM - if you make the window even a bit smaller than its default size, parts of the UI will be cut off. Another thing that isn’t ideal is that the numerical entry popup opens far too easily for me, when I am trying to to drag a slider slowly. There is an auto gain in the app, but I prefer not to use that, and instead, if pushing this hard, I put a limiter after it.
You may have some other tools that add saturation, do compression and downsampling etc, but if you don’t, and especially if you like this particular sound, you might want to grab this at the current intro price of $7.49. From 7th July on, the price will be $15. I wasn’t sure about this at first but it has grown on me quite a lot!
