Hey Sarah, amazing! You're a kind and considerate doctor. That makes you a brilliant one. If there's 15 more like you out there every year, I think we'll be very fortunate. Do t be too hard on yourself, it's only your first week. Do you feel like you're learning a lot more as a junior doctor than you did in med school, I mean practically. Also for future vids, could you please talk about the curriculum in med school, what you studied and the approach taken. Don't feel pressured, we know you're quite busy and get exhausted as well. Take your time love and all the best in the coming weeks. 🌹

Ordained Hypocrite that's so kind of you! Thank you 😘 your kind words are much appreciated. Yes I'll definitely make a video of that, I've started keeping a big list of suggestions. Can't wait!
Dr Sarah, I just want to say you are obviously a wonderful caring doctor and I hope you never lose your humanity and genuineness because that is just as important as any physical treatments or remedies you prescribe! I suffer from ptsd, major depression and generalized anxiety disorder due to years of abuse growing up. It greatly affected me despite appearing quite "normal" on the outside . Even after taking my abuser to court and ending up hospitalized for the first time in my entire life, I tried very hard to continue with my every day life --at one point I took an open book final exam on the psych ward --and got an "A" ! At the time, many of the professionals that worked on my unit did not seem to understand or care about the strong correlation between trauma and mental health issues. From the example you shared about the homeless guy, it is clear you DO understand and have empathy and that is what I craved most of all. It DOES make a difference!

Thank you for your passion to took care of those patients. Many study medicine and many also professional work in medical profession but most of them prefer to choose other field they love more in Or, Icu etc, it is very seldom that a person give service to our mentaly able person.Because they need understanding not just to love and accept them.

I think what you did by offering clothes for the ward is truly amazing. How was it reciprocated by the ward? It's nice being a doctor and being able to think holistically instead of being so focussed on the black and white of the job. I just wonder what the protocols are like for us being able to give back directly?

Thank you 😊 the ward were really receptive and it turns out a lot of staff actually bring things in to help patients. I now take items to homeless shelters as well.

Hello Dr. Nicks!!! ♥ I just love you! You're such a sweet lady! SARAH is one of my favorite songs by Stevie NICKS ;-) I used to work with mental patients until I became one myself lol! I love your compassion. the teen boy who needed clothes :'( Don't apologize for crying. Since I was a little girl I would tell my mom I wanted to work with the "crazy" people. Pardon my term! I didn't know any other word to use :'( I have a mentally challenged cousin. We would visit as litttle girls. She showed me so much love, & I her. I was just fascinated by her! I still see her though not as much. We're 60 now. I've always been interested in psychology. Just got diagnosed with bipolarII/ADHD. We need more caring Dr.'s like you! Blessings & hugs from San Antonio Tx♥♥♥♥♥

I have PTSD from childhood trauma, borderline/mild general learning/intellectual which means I'm more on the advanced/higher functionally range which is unspecified, and definitely ADHD combination type. I've dealt with premenstrual dystrophic disorder and menometragia which is a combination of menorriahgia and menonemtorriaghia that is linked with heavy, prolonged, and dysfunctional uterine. Menonemtorriaghia is so uncomfortable, painful, and causes an effect psychologically when a woman loses too much blood. I have an appointment with my gynecologist on Wednesday. The past four weeks dealing with this, and it can be tough.

How did you feel about your first rotation being in psychiatry? It’s pretty common that people on psych wards are homeless - the world of benefits means that not only do you have to deal with trying to recover but you have to fight against the system too. I too have been homeless directly because of my mental health. It’s pretty normal that most people come in with nothing - regardless of their housing status because you’re generally not expecting to get admitted. I was interested watching this video as someone who has spent A LOT of my adult life in psych wards and also now work in my Mental health trust and part of my job is in medical education - educating student doctors on their psychiatric placement (their first contact with services). I’d be really interested to hear about your experiences as a student doctor and a junior doctor in psychiatry. 😊👍

Sarah Forsyth hi Sarah! Sorry for the slow reply. I am 27, I started GEM when I was 23. Interesting question! I suppose it has affected my relationships in that I've been extremely busy so relationships with friends and loved ones have required more effort. However, I've always been quite a busy person and love to fill my time with various activities so maybe that's always been the case... I know from my own expediences in the 1980s The Hospitals provided a new pair and pant's and like 5 shirts + all the under wears needed and a new pair of tennis shoes. if you came in looking as if you came off a battle field you always left there with new clean clothes.. This is back before they shut down most of the places caring for the mentally disabled.. I'm 60 & the world you have grown up with is so much different from ours who was born in the 50s - 60s.. I have witnessed so much decline in people & society's. Evil is real & it does exist..
