Jess is my favourite reactor. She treats her shows like they are real. She laughs cries and gets excited. She really gets into these shows instead of being like whatever. And when she has to talk in the middle of the episode she makes sure that she doesn’t miss anything important while she talks about a spacific scene that she just saw. She makes them brief and gives proper commentary at the end. I’ve told her this a million times but I’ll say it again, Jess is the best reactor on KZbin.

In the projected stories that were never completed, Rani was supposed to develop a romantic interest in Santiago Jones, the grandson of Jo Grant-Jones and Professor Clifford Jones. But who knows? For me this felt like a traditional, classic-Who story but presented with some top-drawer visuals and location work. l love the focus on the Doctor and Bill's developing teacher/pupil relationship, Capaldi and Mackie working wonderfully together, and how they are depicted beautifully and with stark simplicity against the City of Arts and Sciences in Valencia, Spain. So much so, I would have been quite happy for them to be the only two we see in the entire story!

The classic series did a story once about a society where everyone had to be Happy all the time...Or else. It was a 7th Doctor story called "The Happiness Patrol" and it took place on the Earth colony on Terra Alpha. Anyone found to be unhappy were labeled as "Kill-Joys" and taken away by the Happiness Patrol of the title.
@cag38916 жыл бұрын
G'day Jess. Hope your well. Well after the crap we have had this week in this country, its nice to be able to relax and watch the episode alongside you. Anyway, I love the simpleness of this episode, killer emoji's, where everyone needs to be happy, something that we need to be on a daily basis, especially on social media. We seem to be forced to show how happy we are and if we don't we are usually looked at differently, dispute (in this country anyway) the focus on mental health has been increased, something I know well. We as human have a wide range of emotions, and this is reflected in this episode. What I love about this is that about 3/4 of the episode is just Bill and The Doctor, a great way to get to know her better and a way to see how and were their relationship could go. The idea of setting up a planet before colonisation, brings along interesting questions, especially unknowing who the inhabitants are, a controversial thinking especially when viewing our history. I think it was right seeing the new inhabitants waking up at the end and seeing their new home. I know people have also mentioned the simialrity to The Happiness Petrol and when thinking about it, I would have to agree. I recently watched it (only a few weeks ago after coming back from QLD) and the similarities are all there, (Petrol = emoji Robots). Anyway hope your well and to quote a line from The Happiness Petrol, Happiness will prevail.

I love the introduction to Smile,Bill asked where's the steering wheel and 12's doing his magic in the most fashionable way ( if only he had his 😎...😍.. anyway ). This really reminds me of the 7th Doctor / Ace Mc.Shane adventure The Happiness Patrol 30 years ago in 1988. Same parallels different directions. Quite a strong first adventure for 12 and Bill... and no, I didn't see The Emoji Movie, but this suffices nicely. A little different approach to Into the Dalek ( the first adventure for 12 and Clara Oswald four years ago...where did the time went?!?! Anyway... again..) but quite a fun and exciting second episode, Sesska so far, so good.. so keep it up... and keep some double stuff Oreos.. and milk on standby. Keep on 😄ing!... I am.

Smile is basically Happiness Patrol meets Ark In Space.
@DrTenochtitlan6 жыл бұрын
There actually is a Classic Who Easter egg in this, in that the reason the Earth was evacuated was the same reason as in Ark in Space. This, and the Ark from Ark in Space were both "lifeboats" for the human race from the same incident. (Ark in Space even mentions that there were other groups that tried to do the same thing.)
@ReversedPolarity6 жыл бұрын
Spectrum Storms Nothing wrong with seemingly similar concepts that derivate from original sources. DrTenochtitlan is actually right about the concept repeating itself and their are tons of space lifeboats and colonist ships that already did the same thing, like in the original Ark (not Ark in Space, although the latter is more similar) and even Beast Below. The concept will keep appearing and we're getting more info about Earth's timeline (or timelines). This episode told us more about Earth's future than most episodes in Doctor Who, which is surprising, considered that they usually keep much of the universal timeline under wraps.

Spectrum Storms Listen, I'm not bashing your reasoning, I was just pointing out an often overlooked fact by some people. It's really similar to those episodes in many regards and I also made that statement before, though some people see that as rehashing ideas when it's really not. But don't get me wrong, I find it funny to meet other people who know other similar concepts, as long as it's not taken to the field of quick assumptions.

Allan Veríssimo Concepts are bound to repeat already created works, nothing wrong there (unless it's a complete overall rehash). Although Smile seems similar to Ark in Space and The Happiness Patrol, it does its own thing, and it does it well. Dystopian cities where you're forced to be happy come from the very idea of dictatorships taken to extreme and lots of works already did that before The Happiness Patrol came to the screen. So technically, The Happiness Patrol wasn't a new concept either, but it did its own thing as well as Smile, and there's nothing wrong with that. Overall, it's always a welcome concept to Doctor Who and I enjoyed both stories in their own respective ways.

I Z I wouldn't say it's completely bad, but it's a bit anti-climatic, well... sort of. The sonic has been seen to work with human technology far better than alien tech, so it would be easy to rewire the Vardies (the cons - having an ex-machina screwdriver solving the problem, little time to develop everything). Then again, the Doctor and the colonists still had to do all the hard work of negotiating the boundaries of their society (the pros - the Vardies have a learning conscience beyond their AI programming, and with that, comes a rewrite of their interface that doesn't feel pointless. The reset button turns into an unbiased behavior switch and humans have to become an example if they want to survive on their new colony).

But I sort of agree, Frank Boyce really did it as a retro modern episode with a very simple concept and it seems similar to some of Robert Holmes's deep sci-fi work in Doctor Who. I also think the psychological implications of his concept seem similar to how Terry Nation approached some of his later and very early work. Either way, it's an interesting concept that feels very relatable to modern and future issues.

I actually enjoyed this episode. People keep going on about the pop aspect of it, but the concept is really nice and the resolution, although a bit anticlimatic (a bit in the way Flatline was), it has its reasoning towards it instead of just a reset button (the Doctor and the colony people still had to do the hard work of negotiating a middle ground with the Vardies). But this story redeems Frank Cottrell Boyce from his lyrical days and the implications of it are worth noting - Faulty AI security and the emotional output linked to it (forcing you to be happy all the time - which is a scary concept on its own). I really like this dystopian work and there's some retro music and retro sci-fi vibes about it, just like in the classics. Overall, a very enjoyable episode. A bit underrated imo, but ultimately good.

Like, what am I meant to be feeling towards humanity here? Because I was on the humans' side at the end.

I think this episode SMILE is as close to Black Mirror an episode of Doctor Who can ever get without alienating casual viewers completely... yes as many fans said it is like Happiness Patrol but taken in a very contemporary futuristic way the same way it was then in Thatcher Britain...here we are in social media driven society and told to showcase emotions and it is not a bad thing... and here is a huge threat about misunderstandings.... Again when i first saw it i was gutted series 10 wasnt allowed to have each episode an hour long....as i feel endings (i will not spoil anything) felt needlessly rushed... here case in point...turn it on and off again felt a bit too sudden after mass panic of sudden reveal of human colony for example...but on hindsight SMILE was a highlight of series 10 for me :) The Pilot i was and still am pretty mixed on but i liked the idea of it being soft reboot and now allowing 12 to be the Professor type with Bill the student it makes for interesting dynamics for sure...Thin Ice in for a treat too ;-)

A fun little episode, that's main purpose is to develop the Doctor/companion relationship and in that regard, it does very well. The plot is interesting enough, but it's nothing we haven't seen before and the resolution feels a little bit too easy and cheap. Still, that's not a big enough negative for it to ruin this episode. I enjoy this episode, but I know it's nothing special, so it gets a 6.5/10.

Do you take Dr. Who requests? I got a good one for you to react to.

Ah, 'Smile'; better than Frank Cottrell-Boyce's previous episode ('In the Forest of the Night'), but that's not saying much.

Yeah, not a writer I really want to see again.

Ryan Pollard Well, that's not saying much, but it was a really good redemption nevertheless, and he does end on a high note with a concept that simply works. Smile made me think if Frank Boyce really had more of those cards under his sleeves.

Is it possible to watch this episode and not to smile as wide as possible?

Don't know why, but this episode is giving me flashbacks to The Emoji Movie

I don't share the same degree of love for this one but I do remember thinking it was a reasonably decent episode and being surprised by the degree of negativity in some circles at the time. After hating the Christmas special and the pre-season trailer things were jogging along quite well.... although I did rather hope Pearl's delivery would slow down just a teensy bit and her enunciation improve (Performance Spoiler: they did but not quite yet)

WolfGratz it’s all downhill from here. Well, with a couple of upticks.

Yeah well - I try not to prejudge future episodes but you notice I'm not exactly launching into an impassioned defence! But I stand by the fact that this next one is the last time I had to play back any of Pearl's dialogue as opposed to concentrate very hard - and the only occasion where I still couldn't tell what the heck she had just said.
