Missy never pretended to be good in series 9. She killed those people precisely to make the point that she wasn't. Her old friend/enemy the Doctor had sent her his confession dial (described as being equivalent to a will), and naturally she wanted to know why. But remember from the start of series 10 that the Doctor has been at the university for several decades, and therefore so has Missy.

This was both 1 of the most amazing while at the same time strangest multi parters in all of Doctor Who. Also, of the over 2 dozen Modern Who Companions, Bill won me over in just 1 Season (in particular this 3 parter) to be a Top 5 Companion of The Doctor.

But it's refreshing to see a young person take such a liking to Capaldi's Doctor. He is indeed one of my favorites and it was so enjoyable watching that portrayal again through her eyes ....

I absolutely love this 3 parter so much. Capaldi acting is amazing as well as Bill's, Nardole's and Missy's. This story really does make you fall in love with Capaldi and Bill a lot more. I absolutely cannot wait for the finale... it's really sad that we're really close to the end now but for now I'm really enjoying them. They really are the highlight of my day whenever they are released🤗🤗🤗

I think a lot of people miss the point of this episode - it's a great allegory for modern politics... control the media, own the truth and hope nobody fights back because, like all bullies, it's mostly bluff... and then Bill manages to open a window on a world without the monks (the REAL world) because the memories of her mum (who doesn't exist in the Monk's version of reality) are still so strong and that destroys their world of 'fake news'. It's not a case of love saving the day but the TRUTH conquering lies.

@@ABrecher And that's why I felt so frustrated when this aired because (to me) a lot of people ended up disliking the ending to this episode (and therefore the "Monks Trilogy" as a whole) because of a misinterpretation of what actually happened at the end. Bill's mother was "an inconvenient truth" for the Monks. It's a bit like if somebody took a politician to court for deliberately feeding mis-information to the public!?!

If you were surprised by the regeneration thing, you can only imagine how we felt when this episode was first released. Let me explain. We knew that Capaldi was going to regenerate, that this would be his last season. When they released the trailer for this season, there was a cut of a regeneration scene in it, obviously to hit us in the feels. We were sure that that scene would be his regeneration. The thing is that that scene WAS THIS SCENE. So when we were seeing it a lot of us actually thought that that was it, that we would lose him in the middle of the season and we were getting desperate when he stopped his fake regeneration. I actually felt like Bill and I wanted to punch my TV (since I couldn't punch the doctor)

I like this episode a lot more than most, but I do also recognise some of the faults the Monk trilogy has. Having three different writers for the three episodes was always going to leave the trilogy as a bit of a mess. However, I do like all the episodes individually, especially the first two parts. This is also probably Bill/Pearl Mackie's best episode. I'm glad you did you like it, and I cannot wait to see your reaction to the finale as it is one of the best stories of the entire show including the classic era (imo).

I liked Bill from the get go. She doesn't take the doctor's crap and she calls him on his antics much like Donna did. She also comes off as an average person. Plus, she is playing LGBTQ so the representation is good.

I was fooled by the fake regeneration since the news was out back then that Peter Capaldi was leaving the show. I thought the Doctor was actually brainwashed and that the only way to free him of it was for him to regenerate. Thankfully, that wasn't the case and we got to have more episodes with 12. Me during series 11 I had forgotten to watch dr who for 4 Sundays in a row and I'm someone who loves dr who but series 11 is so bitter,dull,depressing and mediocre that I had totally switched off for it couldn't care for it and the worse part was that the BBC were patting themselves on the back and giving themselves awards for it and people on rotten tomatoes had voted up to 90% for it and us the who fans and whovians alike got thinking something theres something screwy like are all the people who run doctor who hyping that shit up online to get people watching it because doctor who series 11 is utter garbage such trash when you see what it's become people have complained it's too PC I was like okay where's the aliens at !! what have you done to the TARDIS!! why are the companions so lifeless and behave like bastardized planks of wood if I was to rate series 11 on a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 being the worst thing ever and 10 being perfect it just barely grasps a 2 because while it's watchable you'll absolutely hate yourself for it afterwards because you'll think...WHAT DID I JUST WATCH!! I really like listening to your opinions because it makes me reflect on my own with this past season of who that you've yet to watch. In particular you were saying that it's good to see yourself liking a companion more and more as you see them vs the other way around and not all the time you instantly fall in love with them. I'm sure you've heard the bad reviews but I like to think of "current Shayla" as current me watching this last season...most of the times current Shayla sees things better than current me on my first watch through. I'm asking myself a lot of the questions you've been asking only applying it to the last new season of Who. I really didn't like this episode when it first aired but I think I was in a bad mood because it aired the weekend before my year 9 exam week at school! I havent watched it in ages, so rewatching it with you has made me find a new appreciation for this episode! The only part of this trilogy that really didn't work for me were the Monks themselves. I still don't get what their deal was. Are they just evil? Are they parasites? What's the deal with gaining consent from their conquests? What are they getting out of this? Why is their ship a pyramid? It just felt like a mish-mash of vague ideas that seemed fine in their individual episodes but taken as an entire story, it kinda falls apart for me.

This reminds me of the point where Martha became a great companion -- a mix of when she took care of him in the past, and the "walking the earth" episodes. The experience and interactions make both characters a bit more interesting and less of the cheap "cardboard" cutouts companions can be. 'Cause as "world mirrors" the companions can sometimes be bland if not handled right. Five and Six had that a lot -- Tegan and Ben come to mind -- and in many ways that's the true flaw of Thirteen. They're bland, AND they're not even being used for exposition: the entire POINT of the companions. Blander and less interesting than a spoonful of Crisco. There's a reason many of us are glad they didn't follow through on the plans to have Adam Mitchell be a regular companion of 9.
