The aliens hurt the Doctor's head because the Doctor has mild telepathic abilities. Also, I'm glad you've been enjoying these episodes! Your impressions if the two eps you didn't react to on camera pretty much match mine: "Ok, that was an episode. Not bad." for the spiders, qand "Now THIS is a Doctor who episode!" for the Pting episode. XD And yeah, Thirteen is definitely a lot more open. She REAAAALLY wants to have friends again. And those were my thoughts on the companions, too. I liked all three of them, but felt there were too many to build a proper connection to any one. If we'd only had one or two, then it might have been better, but I can't name one of them that I would want to see leave.

I completely agree with your opinions on the companions. The problem with having three is that very often, one (or more) is sidelined. This series Yaz is very much there to just ask questions and that's it, we don't get to know a whole lot about her which is a shame. My favourite is Graham and I do think Bradley Walsh's performance is pretty solid. However considering that these companions have a similar amount of episodes as companions like Martha and Donna, it's crazy the difference in the amount of info and development that is dedicated to each of them!
@NankitaBR5 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. They tried to have a "fuller" tardis inspired by classic who, that used to have multiple companions, but the problem is that although classic who had smaller episodes (30 minutes or less) the episodes were organized in arcs of many episodes (meaning that one single story was divided in many episodes, giving the story more time), which meant that the companions had more screen/story time, giving the writers the opportunity to make a better character development of the companions. With shorter stories the character development suffers, and 3 companions becomes too much. I really like them all and wish I could get to know them better, but either the series needs more episodes or one of the companions has to leave.
@theadamabrams5 жыл бұрын
I think part of the issue was introducing them all at once. Amy and Eleven traveled just the two of them for a few episodes before adding Rory, and then River became more frequent. We got to know each of them separately. With S11 all three companions are added in at once, and I think that made it harder to connect with any of them.
@iansmith40235 жыл бұрын

I guess the most blatant examples of "sidelining" were in Peter Davison's era, who also often had three companions. Adric spent most of _Black Orchid_ mooching around a picnic buffet and stuffing his face with food. Nyssa fell ill at the start of Ep1 of _Kinda_ and was confined to bed until the last minute of the story, but she got off lightly compared to Turlough and Tegan, who spent most of _Terminus_ trying to escape after being trapped in a service duct. The robot Kamelion joined Tegan and Turlough aboard the TARDIS in _The King's Demons_ , but he proved pretty useless and sat out the next five stories until they got rid of him in _Planet of Fire_ . In fact, the 3-companion formula has been a bit hit-and-miss throughout the history of Doctor Who, and I'm surprised that an über-fan like Chris Chibnall fell into the trap.

In previous season's I think you can argue that the Doctor isn't necessarily the star of the show. Sure, his name is on the front of the Marquee and he is in every episode but it's the companions who travel with him that get the most character growth and who eventually save the universe. Except of course for Bill, and she straight out gets boned. Rose saves the universe in heroic fashion, twice. Martha Jones walks the earth in order to make the Doctor's plan work and save the Earth. Donna Noble both saves the Doctor's life and defeats Davros. Matt Smith's run is basically built around the personal growths of Amy Pond, and Clara Oswald. Previous Doctor incarnations are almost there as recruiters who find special people and lead them to their special destinies. At some point, Modern Doctors almost always step back and play second fiddle to their companions. We almost miss that because the Doctor's role is usually played as larger than life. Naturally, when those actresses left the show they always seemed to leave to great opportunities in much bigger things. For this Doctor, the companions are just sort of buddies hanging around. None of them is particularly special. Jody could drop these three off and grab three new "friends" in the next episode and it wouldn't make much of a difference. And they have had much less opportunity to show off their acting chops than companions who came before them. None of these three is going to find themselves playing a roll in an Avenger's movie. Ironically, despite the companions not doing much, you will still find comments on these reviews from people who think that Graham has been allowed to upstage Jody. And for me, that is one of the challenges the show needs to overcome with a female Doctor. Like her male counterparts before her, Jody needs to come across as such a big character that taking a back seat to a companion is no big deal. And this is what I think the show loses with these smallish historical stories with no interconnection and no real character growth.

Though I did find the rest of the story interesting as its not part of history i really paid attention to or learned about in school. Which i think is why they went with such a diverse cast this season because they have a variety of topics they can address. Though I will say I hated the end of this episode. The grandmother should have mentioned something to Yaz when she came back. Like she had to regonize her and know Yaz whole life that she was going to travel back in time at some point. This wedding day was a HUGE part of the grandmothers past theres no way she would forget Yaz was even there

I agree, the finale just seemed out of place in this season of small scale, intimate stories. It felt very forced as if Chibnall had been told, "You have to have a big threat is the finale" so he just threw together the episode, randomly bringing back the character from the opening episode (who should be dead as the Doctor had said the DNA bombs were fast and 100% lethal) and even more randomly have him pose a threat to Earth. Elements were introduced that really didn't go anywhere, like the highly dangerous psychic fields--that just resulted in a bit of a headache when protection was removed--and I was never convinced that this super-powered alien pair would have so readily accepted this obviously ailing and hostile intruder as some sort of god. While far from the depths of 'Arachids in the UK' it was, as you say, underwhelming. Chibnall would have been better resisting the 'big climax' finale formula and stuck to the type of episode that had worked much better through most of the season.

So far, for me Graham is the standout favorite. Yaz hasn't really done much yet. And I thought this would be the episode where that changed. But all she did was observe. She wasn't an intrical part of it at all. And we didn't learn any more about her as a person. Meh.

This was a decent Yaz episode. I agree about the companions. I liked Gram right off (I have like the actor for a long time) and I grew to like Yaz. They never gave Ryan's story enough meat. They started to set him up with some nice plot points but then he was just utilized weakly.

Spider episode was really a problem for me - shooting the spider was bad, but locking them in a room until they starve to death was good? 5 year Future Shayla - have you seen anything memorable or iconic yet? A relationship like Peter & Clara? A villain like Missy or Weeping Angels? The Time Lord Victorious? A character like River Song? In 5 years will anything so far stand put to you as a great moment?

I do have a suggestion, you could react to Silence In the Library/Forest of the Dead like a re-watch since we're done with River Song's timeline (I suppose? not counting her audiobook series of course) ooooor the very first episode of the whole show, which is honestly REALLY worth a watch, An Unearthly Child.

What do you think we learnt about Yaz's character development in this story? I thought she was wasted in this story, just playing third-fiddle, not even second-fiddle and observing more than interacting.

"You are about to die a pointless death. We've got just the thing to cheer you up..." It may not sound like I'm describing my favourite Jodie and the Pussycats episode so far, and perhaps that's because I think that Steven or Russell would have helped make this unforgettably good. If it was meant as a twist to show which side of the religious divide would fall short, then it was signposted too much for me - but it's balanced by a failure to predict the volte face of the Thijarians' motivations. Once we were dealing with another set of cute and cuddly aliens and were just waiting to see just how monstrous the Humans were going to be instead, it was a case of waiting to see the point at which the Doctor cut her losses, in the game of trying to save all the people she could see. A perfect episode would not have had me second guessing like this as I watched, but I was entertained by a very well-acted and atmospheric snapshot of a larger, tragic Partition.

The actor of the angry brother was really good - you could feel the anger. And the story itself was excellent. However, I wish DW would go back to its roots every once in a while and *not* add some sort of supernatural/alien thing in the middle of some of its stories. The alien demons were pretty pointless and I feel this story might have been even more heartfelt and humane without aliens galore. This episode and the Rosa one might have been better as pure historical ones. I guess I just miss the first doctor's historical stories where it was just humans and history...

No one likes the spider episode The one after is hated but tbh I find it one of the better stories this season. The Male character is actually a good guy but then killed off for the female person to take the lead in the operation. The pregnant man thing was abit too weird. If they made him looking more alien it would have been better.

Talking about the Season 11 companions, Bradley Walsh, the actor who plays Graham, is very popular here in the UK. He's a part time actor, stand up comedian and full time quiz show host. He's on our TV's at least 5 days a week presenting the UK version of the quiz The Chase with The Beast amongst others, whom Americans will be more familiar with and The Governess, whom Australians will be familiar with. I'll post some links for you to get to see the real Bradley Walsh...

I totally agree with you on the companions - it's why I didn't watch to the end of the season. They were there for exposition, and to ooh and aah. They didn't actually DO anything themselves. All the previous companions acted on their own, whether that ended up being a good or bad thing. This season all they do is call the doctor for help. They're not companions, they're assistants.
@evandavid28165 жыл бұрын
As ever, a great reaction to one of the more interesting/compelling episodes of this season, especially with the tragic inevitability of the way that the escalating clash between the two brothers ended - just a few quick points below: a) The aliens make for an OK enough red herring this time around I guess, but might the episode have been better off without them as a sort of early Hartnell-era pure historical story, perhaps? (Even if this wasn't a fixed point in time, you could still have had the dilemma of the Doctor being unable to interfere without unravelling Yaz's personal timeline, after all...). b) I agree with Past Shayla that the emotional connection between the companions and the audience just isn't as strong with this lot as it was with previous post-2005 companions - an interesting contrast with this episode in particular in those terms would be with another episode which also revolved around a companion getting caught up in her own family history, namely 'Father's Day', but which in my view really strengthened our emotional bond with Rose in ways that just didn't happen as much with Yaz this time...I could well be wrong, though! c) An exception to this aforementioned lack of connection - for me, at least! - would be Graham, who gets to deliver some lovely speeches on occasion throughout this season like the 'good men' one here; a tendency which, as I've alluded to before, almost makes him seem more Doctor-y than the Doctor herself at times, yes? (Not that I dislike Yaz or Ryan, you understand; I just didn't connect to them as strongly as I did with Graham...then again, others may see things completely differently, yes?). d) In fact, that's an interesting thought experiment - would the Show have been better off story-wise and/or chemistry-wise if Graham had been the Doctor's only companion for this season, perhaps? After all, you could still have had a pretty compelling story arc of the Doctor helping Graham to rediscover the joy of the Universe after losing Grace, but you might also have been able to build a far stronger emotional relationship between the two than it was possible to get with two other companions also jostling for attention/story time - who knows, by the end you might have had something akin to the bond between the Tenth Doctor and Wilfred Mott, perhaps? (Or, more radically still, what if Bradley Walsh had been cast as the Doctor this season, and Jodie Whitakker had been cast as his companion instead, eh? Again, I want to stress that I don't dislike Jodie's take on the Doctor one bit - in fact, I thought she did a pretty darn good job to be honest; even if the material she had to work with might have sometimes let her down in places - but it's still an interesting idea, yes...?).

This one's definitely the highlight of the season. Solid writing, and beautiful visuals. I especially love the design of the Thijari, they were really cool. I agree with you 100% about the companions, and I think they're definitely the weakest aspect of S11. I quite like Graham, but after watching the whole season, I still don't really know *who* Yaz and Ryan are, nor what their relationship with any of the other characters is.
@anonymes28845 жыл бұрын
Ryan and Graham have a _very_ well defined arc IMO. Yaz is the character we know about as well in episode 11 as we did in episode 1, she even somehow manages to be the least interesting character in this one, which is ostensibly all about her family.
@Alfwin5 жыл бұрын
@@anonymes2884 I agree that Ryan and Graham are both pretty well defined in terms of both who they are and their relationship with each other, but that's still only two characters out of four, and one relationship out of six. When the TARDIS is this crowded, one strong dynamic between two characters isn't enough.
@anonymes28845 жыл бұрын
@@Alfwin Yeah, I don't disagree in general. Compared to e.g. Amy + Rory, Rory + 11 and Amy + 11, which all felt distinct and well developed, the relationships aside from Graham + Ryan in series 11 feel insubstantial and somewhat samey. To me it was a mistake to start with 3 companions when they're also introducing a new Doctor but hopefully things will improve in series 12.

This episode is also the only good Yaz episode because obviously its about her family. But other than that this whole Yaz is the best shes my favorite of my new companions from the Dr like what? just feels like such a forced thing. And the Trump episode (spiders) legit threatens to shoot Yaz mom in front of Yaz and not once does Yaz remember oh hey im a fricken COP wtf are these guys doing waving guns around especially being in the UK even in the US that wouldnt have been cool and we love guns out here. I just feel like theres a lot of forced interactions with Yaz just to give her purpose and more girl power!!! The doctor cant think of the solution herself because hey apparently you need 2 women working together to come to the same conclusions the male doctor would have come up with on his own. Thats how in interpreted it anyway which is very condescending writing despite not being their intent it is how it actually comes off though. I think they were just trying to make Yaz feel more important and special to the doctor without realizing that it also meant dumbing down the doctor which conflicts with the concept of gender not really meaning anything
@erickvoshel15 жыл бұрын
Hello Just-So-Shayla, Actually, the Doctor is now 4 & a half billion years old due to being trapped in an alternate dimension after Clara "dies" in "Face The Raven" in season 9. The name of the episode is "Heaven Sent" where the Doctor is transported into a glass chamber in an empty castle surrounded by water. The Doctor is menacingly pursued by a terrifying specter called "The Vale" who disables his/her ability to regenerate & kills the Doctor. However, time resets itself & the cycle begins all over again in a "Groundhog Day" scenario that repeats itself over & over again. Imagine if "Groundhog Day" were a horror movie. That's what "Heaven Sent" felt like to me.. The Doctor does manages to get out of the alternate dimension after 4 billion years only to discover that he/she has been trapped in his/her Confession Dial which is the Last Will & Testament of a Time Lord. Hope this helps you out. I also hope you are looking forward to next season as much I am. My Mom & I have watched this season of New Who & we loved it. We thought this was the best season of "Doctor Who" we had seen in a long time. It reminded us of Classic Who, especially, the Opening Title which was very reminiscent of the Patrick Troughton Era of the late 1960s & the theme has the sound of the Classic Era. We also love Jodie in the role & think it's about time that a woman was cast in the lead role. My question is: Why didn't they do this sooner? For me,the Doctor is neither a man nor a woman. The Doctor is an alien being from another world that can change gender & appearance . The Doctor comes from a society where gender is no longer an issue which is why Time Lords can switch gender when they regenerate. As The Doctor explain to Bill that the Time Lords are "billions of years beyond the petty human obsession with gender & it's stereo-types."

Y'know? I kinda like the idea of an Alien Race that makes sure you don't die alone... It's reassuring in a way. I liked this Episode and I understood why it's important, but I feel that is "Who" needs to rely specifically historical stories more than the classic Alien enemies (or the new ones in this case) then something's definitely wrong... That, and The Doctor being treated like kind of a side character on occasion... It just doesn't feel like "Who" anymore. But that's just my 3 Cents! Loved the Reaction! -"Ren".

Very interesting that you mention Yaz as your favourite companion. A lot of people put her last. Not because there's anything inherently wrong with the character or the actor. It's just that she gets so little to do even in this episode which is based around her family. I hope we get more development of her role in the next series and more about the fact that she is a trained police officer. Which was part of the set up and then just referred to in passing very occasionally. Graham is most people's favourite btw. Including mine. I would happily have watched a series with just Graham and Grace.

This was the first episode that I saw of this season and I absolutely hated it. What an incoherent mess. It could have made a LITTLE bit of sense if those faces in the end would have been souls that they captured for some weird evil plan to rebuild their home planet. But I think I won't express most of my opinions of this season here; don't want to ruin your mood. :-) The only thing I'll say is that I didn't really dislike Kerblam and the finale with the difficult name. There are 2 surprises in that one, of which one is really nice. There still is plently to complain about in those episodes though, but I can forgive those things for the biggest part. I think all the companionships of series 11 are really bland, the fact there’s so many of them means they all have to fight for screen time so you can never get invested in one before we’re suddenly zipped back to one of the others and their ‘story’. But you talking about Graham’s cancer made me think of how interesting it would be to do a whole season where that’s the main arc. Nothing alien, nothing paranormal, just a very human disease and the doctor doing her best to make sure his last days are as wonderful as they can be. With lots of aliens and creatures in between of course

While I don't like a lot of the aspects of this series, the one thing I did like consistently was Graham, definitely the best companion in my opinion. Now Shayla, I need to make an appeal/plea/straight-up beg. First off, we, your subscribers appreciate the time and effort you put in to youtube and Patreon, you're awesome & we all love your stuff. Someone in your last livestream asked if you were going to react to Stranger Things 3 and you said "Probably not." Now like I said, I appreciate everything you do and the fact that you have life stuff going on - hence why you're not reacting to Shield, and if you REALLY can't do it, fair enough, BUT it's Stranger Things, and more than that, it's Mileven. I know you love the show & them as much as I do so is there any way you could react? It's only 8 episodes again this time, and we'll likely only get 1 more season after this. I'm sure I'm not the only one who would love to see them. In fact...even of you didn't put them on youtube and just put them on Patreon...I SWEAR I will do this, I would be willing to up my tier level to see you react to them, one of my favourite reactors watching my favourite show. Of course, if you really can't do it, it's fine, thanks for all you do, but just think about it? Thanks. ;)

I definitely agree with the Doctor being more open. I see this as a massive shift from 12 and it feels like it's because 12 (and 11) must have felt like just as soon as someone gets close, he loses them. 12 tried to avoid it by being closed off at first, but Clara still got in and losing her drove him literally to the end of the universe. 13 seems to be going full opposite, being open and vulnerable right up front, wanting to make whatever connections are possible for however long they last. I liked this episode. It really felt like proper Doctor Who. I haven't really clicked or bonded with anyone, but this seems ok. It seems like a lot of standalone episodes, but no real larger story arc to make me care about what happens. Bad Wolf.
