When Ruby grabbed the pole without hesitating to attract the bogeyman away from the baby it solidified my love for her as a companion.

I think this episode was light by design. They have mentioned in interviews that Disney+ will allow the show to be seen in more countries than ever before. They have also mentioned wanting to make the show accessible to new viewers while still referencing the past. They seem to have taken this episode to do two main things: establish the 15th Doctor and Ruby as a pair and to do some basic set up of the show for new viewers. The fact that some of that set up was a nostalgic reference to his first season was a nice touch. Based on the bits we know about the rest of the season, and having already watched Devil's Chord, I expect that now the set up is done that things are going to go crazy.

Anyone ready for a Millennial "feel old yet?" factoid: Rose Tyler was 19 years old when she met the Doctor in 2005. A baby born that year would be 19 now. Ruby is 20. 2005 is to Ruby what 1987 is to Rose. If she goes back in time to meet her mom when she was a baby like Rose did in Father's Day, her nostalgic Back to the Future-style generation hop would only be a year off from Nine and Rose's present day.

@jonathangoodwin56097 ай бұрын
I don't mind it being campy, but a lot of it either doesn't make sense or contradicts The Doctor in general. It's dumb fun, but it's also not exactly the best writing I've seen from this show. The best way I can describe it is that it feels like it lost a lot of the depth it had before and turned into a show made more for a younger audience than the fans who grew up with it. It's not, like, a bad show, but there are problems with it.
@DerekHartley7 ай бұрын
'a show made more for a younger audience' - so like Doctor Who always was. And I grew up with it, in the 1980s and we had a villain made of out candy. This fits perfectly.
@jackcollinsmartin42107 ай бұрын
@DerekHartley This 100%. Like Doctor Who was literally created as an educational programme for families to watch together. However, there is a line between being campy, and going too far. I felt like Space Babies was going a little too far with the silliness. But oh well. I'm not going to say that these first two episodes were perfect or anything. I still had a few issues with them. But overall, I personally had a hell of a lot of fun! Tl;dr: The episodes weren't perfect but I still had fun. Which is what matters imo!

Ncuti and Millie are already on their way to being a God-tier Doctor/companion pairing in my opinion, their energy and chemistry is infectious and really carries this episode. It had its moments, but overall I'm pretty confident in saying this is probably RTD's single weakest Doctor Who script to date, the tone was a little too childish for my tastes, the whole resolution with the Bogeyman came out of nowhere and the effects of the talking babies just made me feel a little uncomfortable (proof that even with Disney money, Doctor Who will still come in with dodgy-looking effects). Thankfully the next episode is much better, so with any luck this episode will just be a kind of minor blip on an otherwise solid new season
@josephfilm737 ай бұрын
I think they did these first two episodes to sell it to the Disney Execs. I could have done without the notes in the second episode. We get it. I don't need to see note graphics floating in the air each time they press a piano key. Making the babies mouths move I didn't like. They could have just eliminated that. I think that it what people had problems with.

6:55 it’s like watching a reaction video. 20:34 The baby thing was a bit too silly for me too. Definitely feels like a typical RTD episode. Nevertheless I enjoyed it overall. The Doctor and Ruby have good energy and chemistry. Enjoyed the reaction as usual.
@jonathangoodwin56097 ай бұрын

@qa13277 ай бұрын
@@jonathangoodwin5609 yeah I agree to an extent. I don’t think it was completely out of character though. They tied it to his being alone. But in the past he’s also given adversaries one chance to live before taking them out. Still weird though.

I read behind the scenes that it took hours and loads of pounds to get Millie Gibson into the Rubathon Blue makeup. I don't know why, but the idea of making her unnatural, but beautiful reminds me a lot of Dee Wallace in werewolf form in "The Howling". This of course was much better than that.

Fun RTD fact. In 2005 he had planned for the Tardis to appear on the Enterprise in Star Trek: Enterprise. It was all set to happen until Enterprise got cancelled. So I'm 100% expecting Doctor Who Star Trek crossover one day. Also there are some comics where the 11th Doctor met Captain Picard and have to defeat the Borg who teamed up with the Cybermen.

So now the Doctor can just bring the dead back to life? Why didn't he ever do that with his human companions? Is it specifically only for butterflies? Or does it depend on how complex the life is? Or are there no rules to that? At this point the Doctor is an actual God, not an alien. They should really stop just giving him new powers for no reason.
@TheDetectiveEngineer7 ай бұрын
Why would you ask questions when you can simply just accept the fact that doctor can do that. Do you know how hard it is to find one of the oldest time travel tales about cause and effect? Why would the writers work more than just the scene. Who has the time to think of the repercussions of new additions to story elements. We have already been told to like this show, you know what will happen if you don't. You don't want to be a badman now, do you? So just accept it, it's not a big deal as long as you agree with the show. Don't you see how excited these two are from their overall expression. Why would you want entertainment from a tv show when the show could be saving lives.

This was such a weird first episode. The exposition at the start was so clumsy (performance was fine, the writing was just shoved in there). The babies just didn't work for me, because whilst the mouths moved correctly, their expressions had absolutely no relationship to the words, it felt like an older video game where teh expression is fixed. A solidly 'mid' episode, which is why it's so weird it was the first one. They'll have turned off more people than they attracted with this I fear.

it is indisputable that the Disney deal effectively disenfranchises an older generation of British fans, but we are not the future of this show. We are bystanders who can choose to keep up or not. Indeed, this episode is actually a more domestic rumination on politics at home and seems a slightly weird opener to a wider audience. It is fun and emotional, rather than a classic. And maybe that's enough. Time will tell. It always does...
@josephfilm737 ай бұрын
Methinks, Meblieves rather, that this was a pilot episode to show the Disney Execs who write shows primarily based for young children. Dr Who started as a children's show originally but became a lot more serious over the many decades. I'm thinking Capaldi's speech on war with the Zygons. Will they be serious episodes or giant methane farting space stations? I don't know. But I do know lots of Sci-Fi to have kid themed stuff. Think Battlestar Galactica 1980 with the genius children running everyting or Buck Rodgers with the little Twinki robot. Most sci-fi is cheese. I mean, virtually none of it is scientifically plausible or credible, why pretend to be so? Even 2001, which really strived to be scientifically accurate, was not. There was reduced gravity on the moon, but inside the base, it was earth gravity??? The tiny circle on the Discovery would also not generate gravity, it would have to be several football fields wide. Also, the ship would need lots of radiating fins to get rid of excess heat from that AI computer (they use tremendous energy) and the spacecraft would be pitch black that far from the sun.
