It definitely seems that Rose and Mickey were dating but not exclusive. Mickey, however, has always been much more into Rose than vice versa, and I do think they were friends first and she was being nice to him. I think that was the dynamic. She isn't treating him well. But Rose pretty much fell for the Doctor (in a couple different senses) as soon as he showed up, and it's kinda hard to blame her for that. Some guy comes along and offers to show you all of space and time and saves civilizations at every turn? How would you feel? The Doctor, on the other hand, did change his mind and offer to let Mickey come along after he was useful in the Slitheen arc. Mickey was the one who didn't want to go. The Doctor isn't so much possessive as he is selective. There is also a subtext of annoyance there. Just because Rose likes the Doctor doesn't mean she's stopped looking at and flirting with good-looking guys. Without spoilers, just to this point in the series, you can maybe infer that although she loves her life with the Doctor, things between them aren't going the way she'd like? Love the Doctor Who reactions!

Thank you, Hallie 💜 I agree with everythihg you said!! It would be so easy for Rose to fall for the Doctor's charisma and charm, and of course his epic lifestyle. My sense was that Rose and Mickey knew each other all their lives and just were dating sort of out of habit. From the very first episode we saw that Rose didn't even notice he was a plastic replica, that is how much attention she was paying to him. As the series went along, I felt like she was just stringing him along and needed to do a real break-up.

Then again, what I think is that they only made him look different really for the audience to know that something was off and Rose didn't see that Mickey was different because he actually doesn't change really and it's just to tell us that it wasn't the real Mickey

The Doctor did offer to take Micky with them, but Micky said he wouldn't be able to handle it mentally. The Doctor, at least in the classic series, sometimes had 2 or even 3 companions, but mostly he needs someone to deliver his monologues to explaining what is happening, plotwise. Otherwise, we the audience would be completely lost. It's not so much that death follows the Doctor but that he gravitates towards situations where strange events are happening and danger is always present.

I always got the impression Rose didn’t feel fulfilled and wanted something more out of life but lacked the means to achieve her ambition. Whereas Mickey was happy with the Status Que, both lifestyle choices are valid, they should both be happy, but had the Doctor not appeared I’m not sure how much longer they would have been together romantically due to their differences in what they wanted out of the relationship/life. There is no doubt Rose does have feelings for Micky (and I may be way off and hate to say it) but I thought they were with each other out of convenience, more good friends rather than serious partners. Rest assured all your Micky questions will be answered in future episodes :) Next episode is very, very good, can’t wait for your reaction, keep an ear out for a statement that is made about Micky. See you then!

That's a fair point. The Rose/Mickey thing always bothered me, but then I think about when I was 19 and relationships were definitely kind of weird back then. They were either full on exclusive, nothing else in the world exists, or they were fly in the night, good for now, waiting for the next best thing. I'm guessing Rose feels the latter with Mickey at this point.

I always look forward to watching these first thing Thursday morning. There's just something so wonderful and endearing about how much you really seem to embrace and get so completely invested in the show and all the diverse things it has to offer, even enjoying the things that are at least divisive among fans. I actually rewatched this episode at the weekend as I knew it would be up next, and have done so for a few more episodes of this era. There are so things and moments where I can't help thinking of how you'd react and what thoughts you'll have when you come to them, and it's a shame I can't comment on them or your predictions or speculation until they actually happen to avoid spoiling anything. Don't worry about going on for a bit, uf anything I'd enjoy seeing you talk a lot more about your thoughts. There's something I think I've been meaning to comment on before, so I might as well do so in this video even though it barely cropped up this time. You've noticed all the times 'Bad Wolf' has popped up. For a while it was a regular thing on the show to have 'arc words' each season that keep cropping up (sometimes multiple lines or phrases popping up with varying frequency) to act as foreshadowing for what happens later in the season. So it is building up to something even if you have a bit longer to wait to find out what that is. Oh and fun fact, Simon Pegg unsurprisingly had difficulty saying the full name of the alien so they just used his best attempt and added a few growls from 'Max' where he got it wrong ;)

Wow!! Thank you so much for your amazing comment 💜 to know you went the extra mile and watched this episode in advance to prepare is awesome 😅 that's so cool to know! It wasn't my favourite episode so far, but there were some good moments in here. I'm glad Adam is gone and hopefully we won't see him again as I'm not a fan 😅 I think I prefer just Rose and the Doctor, with maybe some Jackie and Mickey thrown in there sometimes! That's interesting to know there was a phrase of the season! So I'm guessing Bad Wolf is the one for this season as we've seen it a few times now 😄 I don't know what it could mean but I'm sure we will find out soon! I hope you have a lovely weekend 💜

Congratulations, you’ve now seen just over half of Series 1. In my opinion, the second half is better on average than the first half, but people’s opinions do differ so much… You can be assured that there’s no end to the surprises and the novelties. It seems to me that the character of Mickey was not well thought out initially. He’s not due to get written out of the show any time soon, but his character develops and changes as Davies gradually decides what to do with him.
@koolbanana

I think you will find that when Noel Clarke was offered the job as Mickey he was told there would be a gradual story arc in which his character would develop so it was part of the plan from the start.
@jonathan.palfrey
@jonathan.palfrey Жыл бұрын
@@koolbanana Interesting. You may be right, but his character development gives me the impression of being made up as it goes along. I suspect the truth is a bit of both. Yes, Noel Clarke was promised character development, but the exact nature of his character development was put together on the fly. I’ve read RTD’s book, “The Writer’s Tale”, which makes it clear that the show was put together in a tearing hurry involving frantic last-minute improvisations and flashes of inspiration. Yes, there was a long-range plan, but it was rather vague, because in practice stories were being torn down and rebuilt constantly. It was not a calm, orderly process. That book starts in 2007, long after Series 1, but I suppose the process for each series was much the same.

This is a great episode and special for a few reasons. For one, there's Simon Pegg as the Editor. If you don't know him Jules, the man's geek royalty. You need to watch his 'Cornetto Trilogy' - three disconnected movies featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, with Edgar Wright as director (Shaun of the Dead; Hot Fuzz; and The World's End). He's also been in Hollywood franchises such as the Star Trek and Mission Impossible films. Actually, he has the rare distinction of having been in Doctor Who, Star Trek AND Star Wars. Secondly, this is the first time ever that the Doctor actually kicked a companion out, which makes Adam unique. He actually returns as a villain in a comic down the road. Oh and yeah, I feel sorry for poor Mickey too. I never have liked how Rose treats him, she really needs to just properly break it off with him. The next three episodes are all amazing and some of the highlights of the season, so you're in for a real treat. Then it's just one good episode before the incredible final two episodes. Until next time!

Ah Jules, you can "yammer" on as long as you like. I love listening to your thoughts, and it's...fantastic, to hear a fresh perspective on these episodes. 19:33 I mean, certainly won't spoil it, but I think its fair to say that Rose took the biggest step away from Mickey that she could in the first episode. I do agree with you though about the romance. I'm all for it in a general sense. I think any good adventure has some romance to it. I just think that if they wanted to have Rose getting romantic with people they should have had her cut it off completely in the two parter. When I first saw this episode I went bug-eyed when Rose gave whathisface the TARDIS key. I remember my first thought was "Oh no, is he going to try and steal the TARDIS?" Also I had a finger-snapping moment when I saw the editor. "Oh! Oh! That's the guy from Shaun of the Dead!" Good ol' Simon Pegg. The next episode is one of my personal favorites. Not gonna spoil anything Jules, but I will do you the courtesy.. Have a box of tissues handy.

I love the idea of him going through the rest of his life being terrified of people snapping their fingers. Don't worry about forgetting Mickey, he is intentionally forgettable. I mean he waited... while everyone thought he may have murdered Rose... so not exactly having many options. the Doctor isn't really "dating material" he is constantly on the move, will outlive pretty much everyone he meets, and is a madman with a box. He does pick companions, and he chooses well. Though it isn't impossible....

I think the Doctor just doesn't have any patience for people he doesn't think measure up. Show yourself to be foolish, weak-willed, or just incurious, and he'll write you off in a heartbeat. You're afraid to look into something that's obviously wrong and/or you're happy to live in ignorance? Goodbye. He's got no respect for that, and he's not going to waste his time on you. He'd rather you stay out of his way. That's not to say he doesn't have a special connection with Rose, but some of that is just down to the fact that she's earned his respect.

I look at Mickey and Rose as both being very young about their relationship: she almost dies, & he wants her to go out to watch a match at a pub w/ him. He stays at home, & she loses object permanence. She has a flirtatious attitude with the Doctor, and the Doctor is charisma incarnate - not inherently a couple-y thing, but she *is* someone he respects greatly and cares for, which matters a lot. Wonderful reaction, as always, & I love that you are worried for Mickey. 💜💜➕🟦

“Has everyone forgotten Mickey?” I haven’t. Poor Mickey. He was a coward, but his tech ability saved the world from the Slitheen. Rose is quick to fall for another pretty face. And her judgement isn’t proving the best. Adam had been working for Henry Van Statten. He was working for a shady organization. He’s got ambition that might blind his moral sense. Mickey is a coward but would he do what Adam did? Actually he was brave with the Slitheen. Okay I’m on team Mickey. I think Mickey views them as a relationship and Rose maybe not so much. When this episode came out the whole “spike” thing in the head seemed truly scary and bizarre. But in the years since this aired I can see people totally going for it. The internet was a lot smaller when this came out and kids rarely had mobile phones. Now folks live on phones. How many would happily go for a ‘spike’ in their head to attach them to the internet? Then again I say that as I am on my iPad :D.

Lovely video. The goats have an idea for you about The Mickey Situation, when Rose choose The Doctor over him it was essentially her saying goodbye and ending their relationship. That stated, they are very close to losing video privileges. Both the goats and the alpacas overhead me discussing Joss Whedon's universe and that you had watched Firefly. Since then every time I walk passed the goat's paddock they line up and go down the row saying Firefly, as I go passed. Adam does return in a comic book that was released during the franchise's 50th anniversary. this is never mentioned in the show, so there's no real spoilers, but i'll give a breif summary if you want to know what happens: . . . . . . . basically Adam, now an old man, teams up with another villain to kidnap all of the doctor's companions throughout history because he was jealous at being left behind. in the end, he realizes he was wrong to blame the Doctor for his own screwup, and turned against the other villain to save them all, costing him his life. in the end, all the companions go back to their own times, and the Doctor gives Adam a proper burial with a tardis-shaped tombstone that says "Adam Mitchel, A Companion True".

Simon Pegg = Jack Frost. Fight me, it's true. This was the introduction of Face of Boe, yeah? The theory behind Boe has me wound up. I honestly can't say anything about Mickey without spoiling anything, but I will say he... serves sort of a purpose in Series 1, albeit very small, but his impact as a character is thin. The focus seems more driven on what kind of impact Rose has on The Doctor. Which is welcome.

I mean Rose was just in the year 200,000 where Mickey was long dead. Its not cheating if he's dead. I think Mickey's expectation is she's going on this holiday and will come back having gotten all the excitement out of her system and then they'll live happily ever after. The Doctor has always been a bit flirty and pseudoromantic with companions. And I think having groups travel around with him slightly irks him. Especially considering the first adventure he had with humans was with bothersome, nosy people and he was repeatedly kept from dropping them home.

Season one of Doctor who has the best Character writing of all of the series because of the interconnected relationships that i love watching your reactions to it because i can see you have a naturally strong empathetic intuition. Your soo right about Mickey and rose, when i first watched it I found it weird and felt bad for mickey but it wasnt something everyone who i know watches doctor who really cared about. And because of that i think it shows just how well written the characters are because the same thing happens in real life. Those of us who are more receptive and empathetic to others notice those kinds of things that often go un noticed but Russel when writting these characters made sure to put those kinds of things in. Also its interesting to hear your take on the doctos jellousy, I relate to the doctor a lot that i never really gave it much thought but i realise after you pointed out his dismissal of the other that he wasnt jellous of them he just simply doesnt have the patients of time for those kinds of people and I exactly the same way. Its hard to see people have such great potential but are stuck not living upto it that for myself i just move on and dont have time for those people and i realised the doctor is the same he wants the best for people and wants to see them do their best but will not waste his breath on people who are too held back by their own flaws to listen. We detach from them in this way because it hurts to see and at least in my case i've learned that if I dont move on i'll negatively impact me. You can lead a horse to water but you cant make it drink, you and try to get people to be their best and to help them but if they dont want your help its just wasted energy. They need to work it out on there own. And seeing the doctor act this way adds to his wisdom. He isnt dismissive because he doesnt care of is jellous, its because he does care. I could go on more about the character writting but ill have to hold back for now as to avoid spoilers. But all that being said YES! I feel the same way about mickey that you are and I so cant wait for you to see more of the series your are going to love this ride of a show! I cant wait for your next reaction video im glad i found your channel hearing about what you pick up on is great! Im loving your Doctor who reaction videos keep them coming!

Thank you so much!! I can see a lot of mixed thoughts to Rose and Mickey in the comments, so perhaps it's not really a big thing that others seem to think about or focus on. I really do probably need to put that aside, but as you said... It wouldn't have been written in if it weren't to mean something! I have read a few comments about my thoughts of the Doctor being jealous/possessive, and I think you guys are right! He is an alien, not human, and sometimes I might forget that as he just seems to look very human-like to me 😅 I definitely think it comes down to him preferring just the one human to interact with, as perhaps like you said, other humans are just annoying 🤣 Thank you so much! I like your point about the doctor seeming a bit possessive of Rose. I think it's definitely something to do with the time war. I dont know how much you know about timelord biology so without spoiling anything, there's a line in the very first episode that suggests Rose is the first person the doctor has interacted with since the time war. This would mean that the other moments Clive has photographic evidence for actually took place after the doctor met Rose. Maybe he had these adventures when the tardis first disappeared in the episode, but in my mind they occurred between the doctor's attempts to convince Rose to travel with him. He told Rose his ship travelled in space, but she decided to stay with Mickey so the doctor went off and had some adventures but kept thinking about Rose. Later, he remembered that he didnt tell her about the time travel bit so he went back to the last time he saw her and tried to convince her again, this time successfully. Perhaps this is partly a trauma bond?

Later, he remembered that he didnt tell her about the time travel bit so he went back to the last time he saw her and tried to convince her again, this time successfully. Perhaps this is partly a trauma bond?" is SO INCREDIBLE! I honestly didn't even THINK about that brief moment when the Doctor left Rose there, and then came back moments later, that he would have been off out having adventures for goodness knows how long. No need to apologise 😊 i find it hard to remember character names as well with some shows too because there are just too many characters. I like to explain the whole romance situation with the Doctor and Rose but i can't without the risk of spoilers so i won't say other than The Doctor is a 900 year old ancient alien and Rose is 19 years old i see those pair as a teacher and student kind of relationship. The original title for this episode was "The Companion Who Couldn't" instead before it was "The Long Game" which would had been a great title this was basically about Adam putting to the test whether he was companion worthy or not and of course proved that he wasn't unfortunately we do not see that character again he does however appear in a Dr. Who comic called "The Prisoners of Time" which be careful if you spot it, until atleast after Season 7 it contains alot of spoilers.

This is probably the weakest episode of this first series of the reboot, but that doesn't mean it's awful or anything. While it's not an episode I seek out on rewatches, I still have an ok time with it. It's always fun to see Simon Pegg in my opinion, and he hams it up nicely in this episode. Adam leaves almost as soon as he arrives (thankfully, since I didn't like him very much), with some much-deserved comeuppance! Comeuppance which feels all the sweeter given Adam's actor turned out to be a class A creep in real life! The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe is a great name for a villain, and hey - a small background appearance from the Face of Boe on the Bad Wolf Channel! I think this is the episode RTD's - The showrunner, and lead writer, of this era of the show - has expressed dissatisfaction with his script for it. Not because it's bad, but because he found himself faced with a choice - primarily follow the Doctor and Rose, or primarily follow Adam, and by trying to thread the needle it makes both halves of the episode weaker. I distinctly recall him stating in DWM that Adam was his 'character in search of a writer' due to how much of Adam's motivation and backstory wound up getting cut in the process (which would have made him a bit more of a tragic figure than he does on screen, and his choices come across as more sympathetic than they do in the broadcast version)
