The weeping angel was based on an angel that disappeared from a graveyard Stephen Moffat discovered on holiday in Cornwall, he was taken by the nature of the statue but when he returned later it had vanished. BTW It's a 'doctor lite' ep when they are filmed them as side story, and this is about the best one they every did. It still ranks as one of the most original with the creations & became an instantly classic Who villain. The Angels will break your heart and nobody every looks at statues again the same after this , Great reaction :)

This episode was written by Steven Moffet who wrote “The Empty Child” two parter in season one, “Girl in the Fireplace” in season two, and the “Silence in the Library” two parter in season four. If there was one contestant in his episodes it’s no one is killed. This one is the only one where people die, but it’s of old age. This is sort of another episode based off an Expanded Universe story. Steven Moffat wrote a text story for Doctor Who Magazine shortly called "What I Did On My Christmas Holidays By Sally Sparrow" which used the premise of the Doctor being separated from the TARDIS and needing to get a girl named Sally Sparrow to send it back to him by sending messages and instructions through a time loop. The Weeping Angels are entirely original to this episode, though.

Sally ducks because the Doctor throws the ball into the room. Sally turns, sees the Angel and survives to unravel the rest of the drama. The Doctor in doing this is sent back to 1969 but he already has Sally's folder so he knows what to do. I know, wibbly-wobbly timey-wimey. Watched this when it went out and everyone in the room by the end was screaming. Within hours there were 'The Angels Have The Phone Box' T shirts on Etsy. One of the best episodes ever.

I feel like Moffat understood better than any other writer of Doctor Who, that time travelers don't always meet people in the right chronological order - and he wasn't afraid to explore that angle of a story, even at the risk of confusing the audience with timey-wimey stuff; where other (otherwise brilliant) writers would stick to a more linear formula of story telling.

@quietdemon81386 жыл бұрын
yugisr it’s a causality loop by her saying how and being stopped by the doctor saying that’s the last he’s got he warns them therefore the writer dude doesn’t have enough time to write it and after she gives him the folder he sometime in the future is sent back in time with Martha to deliver the same message therefore creating a flexible loop.

In defence of Love & Monsters, it is a comedy episode and therefore the humour is subjective. The comedy itself slightly risque in that grand British tradition of saucy humour. Think Donald McGill's cartoon picture postcards or the Carry On film franchise. The key example is probably the "love life" gag but there's also Jackie's pathos-filled flirtations with Elton - arguably Camile Cadouri's strongest performance in the show.

It's appropriate that, while Blink is far superior, you were reminded of Love and Monsters, both episodes are an example of what is known as a 'Doctor Lite' episode which, as the title suggests, has the Doctor in a substantially reduced role, which they did during the David Tennant era, if I recall correctly to allow them to record the Christ,as Special at the same time as the recording block for the main 13 episodes, since they didn't need David for as much filming as the average episode. The 4th season also has a Doctor Lite episode, Turn Left, which like Blink is very good. Another bit of interesting trivia, Moffat has confirmed that there were several other endings as well. The initial draft didn't see the TARDIS leave Sally and Larry behind, instead travelling back to 1969 and meeting the Doctor and Martha, with the doctor revealing he'd learned about the angels from a book Sally wrote about her experiences, which he asks her to sign the book, revealing that the name on the book is Sally Nightingale. He also considered a bittersweet ending where Sally ended up a victim of the Angels as well and an ending mostly the same as the finished one, but where Sally was pregnant, before he decided that it was more effective to delay Sally and Larry's romance until after she met the Doctor in person.
