It's scenes like the intro that just make me think how insanely gifted of an actor Capaldi is. There's a few moments in Doctor Who where you can truly see how great of an actor the people playing the role are, Troughton in his talk with Victoria about his family, Tom Baker's 'Do I have the right?' speech, Sylvester McCoy with the guards in The Happiness Patrol, and pretty much all of Capaldi's monologues like this deserve to be recognized among them.
@MrDylancutter6 жыл бұрын
I don't like Series 9 at all, but it's so true that some of Capaldi's best acting is featured in it - particularly in some episodes to come for Sesska! Twelve isn't even my favourite Doctor but I think Capaldi is the most talented actor to play him.
@MyAbridged6 жыл бұрын
I honestly have to disagree. Of the New Who actors he's far and away the best actor of the five of them. But I don't think he's better than Troughton. I think Troughton has to be the single most gifted actor to play the Doctor, to put it this way, I don't think Enemy of the World could have worked with any of the other actors playing the Doctor, simply because I don't think they could have matched Troughton's performance in that series. That's not to say 2 is my favourite Doctor, he's only third IMO (after 7 and 12), but I think he was the best actor of any of them. Though of course, this is only my silly opinion
@MrDylancutter6 жыл бұрын
That's interesting! I much prefer both Ten and Eleven to Twelve, but I've always thought that Capaldi is the more talented actor, and gave the best performances (can't say what episodes because she hasn't reacted to them yet, but I'm sure you can guess which ones I mean). His speeches in general are usually chilling too. Though having seen Jodie Whittaker's performance in Broadchurch, the title of best acted Doctor might change when 13 takes over! :)

Dylan C Tennant is just as talented an actor as Capaldi imo. His performances in stories like Human Nature/The Family of Blood, Midnight and The Waters of Mars match any of Capaldi's best.

The bootstrap paradox - one of Moff's favourite tricks - right back to Blink (who first wrote the Doctor's half of the Easter Egg?) - through the Library (who gave the Doctor the idea to give River his screwdriver?) and onto the silly Time/Space (who's idea was it to throw the 'wibbly lever'?) - it's a staple of time-travel stories, of course - but it's so much fun to have it explicitly mentioned. Plus, Capaldi playing guitar over the theme tune. Epic.

people know or rather say "very few people understand" when viewing the 9th season, 3-4 series, that Doctor Who really really died! But one version of the Doctor saved lives for other incarnations. The fixed moment is the death of Twelfth, the Doctor in the fight against ghosts at the underwater station, he really dies, but the past incarnation of the doctor will find out his future life. replaces the specter with a hologram from which he dies in a single streaming temporal reality. The doctor did not break the fixed point. This is stated in the lectures on Beethoven, he himself became a ghost, and the present: never existed. (TV: at the bottom of the lake, before the flood).

Loved this two parter a lot! Really clever writing from Toby Whithouse. The guy went from a poetic monologue about Beethoven's 5th to a horror story with ghosts to an action packed adventure with an old school alien to very dramatic moments between the Doctor, Clara and the underwater base team to a logical conclusion that involves the Bootstrap Paradox and the Doctor's ghost and closes on a poetic loop back to Beethoven's 5th. This is what Doctor Who does best - many flavoured surprises in one fantastic package.

Okay, here's the _second_ inadvertent sign by the Doctor from last episode: when talking to Clara and saying the whole 'duty of care' thing, his hand makes the ASL shape for "I love you". I am not certain whether the Doctor accidentally 'said' that, or Capaldi. And at 6:02 -- I shot a Look at my brother when she said that. He shot me one back. That sounded extremely revealing on the part of Clara's state of mind, at least how Jenna said it. (Combine it with 'he was ... impossible' from "Last Christmas", and it also seems to say something.)

@IkeOld6 жыл бұрын
This episode helped me a lot to explain thoughts I had for a long time. Like the bootstrap paradox, we often say “if I go back in time, I would change this or that”. But it doesn’t work like that. In the first place, by changing it, you would remove the reason for going back and cause this paradox. But if you could work around, you don’t know what is going to happen instead. We are not defined by our past, but by our memories and experiences. They made who you are today. Focus on what makes you happy today, not what might have made you happy in the past.
@archive97966 жыл бұрын
I think the reason 12 explains the Bootstrap Paradox is that people called Angels Take Manhattan bad cous they didn’t understand the Pre Destination Paradox

TweedJacketProductions Or not. Just because you don't know the side implications, doesn't mean the integrity of the story, or even the lore, is shattered... people are so hell bent in shattering the integrity of these stories when different phenomena can happen in time travel in specific situations and in specific changes, that's how you can explain the absence of the Reapers in certain paradox stories, for instance. Or how the Doctor can actually bend the rules a little bit if he "lies to the universe".

No - it may mean they reject the Predestination concept. Period. But there are also other reasons to consider the thing fuller of holes than a very, very holey thing
@ReversedPolarity6 жыл бұрын
WolfGratz If you're refuting possibilities of a logical chain of events, you're halfway near to accepting miracles. It's a brilliant reverse engineering, especially for those who believe in an alternative to dismiss information. Man, those flat Earthers may be right after all - a couple of wells really might show the Earth is flat. This isn't a donut or a swiss cheese, lad. There's different phenomena going on all the time in Doctor Who. Keeping the consistency is hard enough for any writer, but even if we can't fully explain every implication, we can assume some facts may lead to those conclusions. Until this day, nobody has problems with a blind Doctor on a computer like he was Daredevil, but they have problems with unknown phenomena. Choose your plotholes wisely...

@ReversedPolarity6 жыл бұрын
Michael Lukash, indeed. I think the audiences nowadays are a bit more demanding of villains because deep down we know the world is not black and white. Evil isn't born, it's made (well... most times), but we only see part of that happening in the show. We didn't even know the Fisher King's backstory and that gray area is precisely why I loved the God Complex's minotaur. I know the Whoniverse is a universe full of things that want to eat you, but still... it's not always about an evil plan and I appreciate a well-rounded villain.

The show missed a golden opportunity here to remind the viewers that Clara lost her mom, she lost Danny, she isn't close to her dad....so the Doctor really is all she has. That annoys me whenever I watch this episode. With a little bit of context, it makes her reaction to his "death" really understandable. I've seen people say she's selfish in that scene. But she really isn't if you think about it.

The thing is, she is selfish. Clara is a selfish and at times unpleasant person. The thing I like though about 12's era is that these characters are that way, and do get treated more that way. Admittedly moreso in season 8 than 9, but in both the Doctor and Clara are portrayed as much more fallible people who get acknowledged as being that way, as opposed to in older New Who stuff where you'd have characters like Rose or 10 being just as bad, and really unpleasant, but who never get called out on it, rather being karma houdinis and 'designated heroes' Clara is being selfish and unpleasant, but she's supposed to be, and is treated as such by other characters, as opposed to being selfish and unpleasant, but being treated as perfect
@caomhan846 жыл бұрын
*Shrug*....People are different and deal with emotions differently. People process grief differently. Just because you'd act differently in her place doesn't make her reaction bad per se, especially since it was in the heat of the moment. Careful to avoid spoilers here in case Jess reads, but especially considering what happens with Clara ultimately, I think she redeems herself for whatever selfishness she showed here. Besides, go back further to Series 7. Look what she did there. She had no idea what would happen when she stepped into the Doctor's timestream. She sacrificed herself, the ultimate UNselfish act. So really, all she's showing here is that she's human.

Did you notice that when Albar Prentis hands out the business cards for his funeral service, the tagline on them reads, _“May the remorse be with you.”_ ? Stable time loops are not really as "mind-blowing" as they're being portrayed here. They're only paradoxical, if there is _no possible way_ for an initial cause to exist, other than time travel. In this case, it would only be paradoxical, if it was _absolutely impossible_ for the Doctor to come up with the idea of a hologram and the messages to his earlier self on his own. But that's not the case; he constantly has clever ideas like that. This means, that the Doctor initially came up with this scheme at some point to set the loop in motion, but once it started, he didn't have to come up with the idea anymore - he could just crib it from his future self. Thus a time-travelling cause displaces an originating cause, leading to the same effect, and the loop becomes stable. The version of the Doctor that originally had the idea is gone from reality, and the time-loop is self-supporting now.

Just realised that the undertaker is Paul Kaye, Thoros of Myr from GoT

I just want to let you know that I have call sheets from Doctor Who. I have a few from season one with the Ninth Doctor, one from season two with the Tenth Doctor and a few from season five with the Eleventh Doctor. I have one call sheet from the Sarah Jane Adventures episode Invasion of the Bane and a few call sheets from seasons four and five, and I also have two scripts from a season four story.

There’s probably a whole Big Finish boxset with Bennett and O’Donnell

I've always thought that the actor playing the rat-like creature, Paul Kaye, would make an excellent Doctor.

You might recognise that Tivolian undertaker better without the makeup, it's Thoros of Myr.

The episode where the start and end were the best parts. I found this two-parter left me a bit flat at the time but hay-ho, moving on. Quite exited for next week though. Actually I always look forward to every Friday.
