Having read a lot of the Doctor Who tie-in novels I've always wondered about the people who write them, what their own favourite books and influences are, and what the process of being commissioned to write Doctor Who media is like, so I'm very happy to discover this channel! Also a fan of the audio dramas, incidentally Stones of Venice and The Zygon Who Fell to Earth are two of my favourite 8th Doctor stories so thanks for them

I love Sick Building! I had a friend who really liked it as a kid and I eventually got my hands on a copy which I read in the first few weeks of lockdown. It was such a fun, playful book, it helped make things a little bit easier.

I'm glad to learn that you have positive feelings about the Pinnacle DW books. I like many of their covers, and love how they came up with their own unique Doctor Who title logo.

Hi Paul, I read The Return of Robin Hood last year, it was a lot of fun, I was going through a Robin Hood phase at the time and I'd recently read a short story collection from the 70s by Antonia Fraser, I found your book immediately afterwards and it fit exactly the same vibe as the short story collection did. What was your inspiration in terms of existing Robin Hood material?

i read a lot of different version - but not Anonia Fraser - i must look that one up! Of particular help were Roger Lancelyn Green and Rosemary Sutcliff.

I'm glad you went easy on Bidmead. I read Logopolis and Castrovalva relentlessly in front of my grandparents' coal fire while munching Jammy Dodgers. Too many faves to list but Mac's Dinosaur Invasion was gripping on a whole other level. Three Doctors for Crimbo with the 'too-Welsh looking Hartnell...now who was it who said that??

I will always think of Sick Building as having the unspoken subheading “or, The Wicked Bungalow” :)

Love your work and I've read many of the books you mentioned. I'm in the weird position of being someone who was already a Doctor Who fan literally years before ever seeing the show or even reading the novelizations. I grew up in an area of the US where Doctor Who was not shown on the local PBS station, but I became aware of the show via magazines such as Starlog and was deeply annoyed that I couldn't watch it. My family later moved to an area where Doctor Who was available, so I was finally able to watch it around the time Tom Baker left the show and I soon started reading both the Target novelizations and the US Pinnacle versions, complete with that great Harlan Ellison intro. Looking forward to some deeper dives into your own Doctor Who novels.

My first Target book was The Mutants. I loved how they kept the blurb about why the Doctor looked different on the cover, but the only thing on the cover was a Mutt!

Did you ever read any of the Doctor Who comics? My husband Pat Mills wrote several in the 80s, including the Star Beast (drawn by Dave Gibbons). He and Dave had the great honour of their story being chosen to be adapted for the first of the three 60th Anniversary Specials that aired last November.

Oh, I read them obsessively! I was nine at the time and loved them all. How lovely of you to comment

@@paulmagrs-g8n Thank you for replying :) What I found particularly lovely was that Russel T Davies and David Tennant were also huge fans of DW as kids, and read all the comics. I found you via your thumbnail holding up Moominland Midwinter, as I was (and still am) a huge Jansson fan. That book, and Moominvalley in November, are my favourites, as they are particularly introspective and 'quiet'. I really enjoyed Jansson's The Summer Book, too.

I really like The Scarlet Empress although I think I liked it more after finishing it. I feel it would have made a better opener for the range.

Great books there. I recently sold my Targets but kept a few-mostly the Malcolm Hulkes and David Whitakers. I re-read Mad Dogs… very recently and thought you may have been channelling some Robert Rankin!😁 Also, The Infinity Doctors is absolute top-tier ‘Who. What (if any) classic story would you have loved to novelise/Magrs-ify?

ooh, i didnt realise you had a KZbin channel, Magrs! The only of yours I've read is the Pheonix Court trilogy (absolutely amazing, did not expect to like reading about sex (book 1) or becoming so engrossed in a community. Genuinely so good) and your two EDAs (which i also enjoyed immensely, i just wasnt as surprised by my reaction to them)
