Loose Cannon worked using shooting scripts for their recons, so they have each shot described. This color Marco Polo was made before Waris Hussein's Tele-Snaps were found. I think the black and white one uses the Tele-Snaps (off air photos). A couple of episodes they remade were subsequently found, e.g. Enemy of the World, and you can see how close they got pretty much every shot.

I have no idea if Marco Polo was one of them, but many of the audio recordings of missing episodes were made by a teenager named Graham Strong. He recorded until around the end of the Troughton era,but by then his life had moved on. Nonetheless,he archived all his tapes and kept them stored away. Decades later he donated them to the BBC,who set about doing digital clean-ups under the supervision of the brilliant Mark Ayres ( former composer for McCoy era Classic Who);who was able to make the 60s home recordings sound so clear. Sadly,Graham Strong passed away a couple of years ago.

David Holman and James Russell both recorded the audio from this episode. Josh Snares channel on KZbin has done wonderful little docos on the missing episodes. Well worth a watch. The Peter Jackson Movie "They shall not grow old" is indeed wonderful! In addition to colour being authentically added, and the motion correction - it also adds realistic ambient sounds;and contains dozens of archived reminiscences from veterans. The way the audio is edited in,and marries up with the imagery,it really feels as if you're listening to a multitude of commentaries. It's indeed a must watch.

I was lucky enough to see it in the theater, during its brief release, and I swear it was unreal how the first scene in color, and 3D looked. It was almost as if I could step through the screen into 1914.

Ah the first historical. It's such a shame this one is missing. You can really see how much effort was put into the sets and costumes. When they were filming the Marco polo scene for an adventure in space and time mark gatiss was very tempted to lock them all in and recreate it.

I'm surprised they haven't recreated all the old missing episodes.

I'm sure the intention is to animate everything eventually. This one and Master Plan would just be huge undertakings.@@Fardawg

This is what I like The Classic historic episodes they didn’t have an alien in it. In modern Doctor Who historic episodes they always shoehorn aliens in it

They stopped the pure historicals with Season 4 of the classics. So long before the revival.

Literally like the last real historical in classic who was the visitation which had an alien as a part of the story in the past. I get your frustration but this is not something new

Worth mentioning that the colour recon is made using promotional photos. The black and white one is actual screenshots of the episode.

I watch Classic Series in order, and don't want to skip any, eventhough some episodes might be boring But this episode, amaze me, like calling the TARDIS a caravan of some sort It just... different, you know?

Man I wish they'd animate this already.

I think it's because a lot of these historicals have too many characters and sets.

I'm afraid William Hartnell was ill during rehearsals and recording of the second episode, hence his limited involvement after the script was hastily adjusted

11:32, how about the American Doctor Who?......I mean The Time Tunnel, of course. At least 2 of the Historical TT episodes have DW parallels. If mentioned this before, sorry to nag.

I'm starting to think this story isn't about a swimming pool at all! Regarding your speculation about why Susan was attending Coal Hill School, the TARDIS needs repairs, particularly to the navigation system (which is also why they can't simply offer to take Polo back to Venice, he'd end up in another time or on another planet) the Doctor arrived in 1963 and started trying to repair the TARDIS (there's a throwaway line in An Unearthly Child about him finding a possible replacement for a faulty filament) Susan enrolls herself in the school simply because she's bored hanging around while the Doctor's tinkering. Episode two of this story is the only episode in the history of Doctor Who to be broadcast on February 29th. Nice to see you're both enjoying this story. Hope the rest of it continues to meet with your approval!

Well, strictly speaking the next video is Marco Polo Parts 5-7 but then yes, The Keys of Marinus Parts 1-3.

Seasons 1 and 2 are great for existing episodes. But season 3...a few stories that are completely missing. Only 3 stories with all episodes existing. And no episodes animated. Season 4 is almost as bad, but loads more animations
