I'm sure someone else has already commented this, but at the end of the episode the Doctor originally said he was taking Peri to Blackpool, which would have led into a story called "The Nightmare Fair" featuring the Celestial Toymaker. However, when they learned the show would go on hiatus they edited out that part as they realized they would have to retool their plans for next season.

Tasambeker was exterminated right after she killed Jobel because she initially tried to help and warn Jobel about Davros' intentions, they did show this onscreen too. Also, the reasons why Davros had Tasambeker kill Jobel is for one (and Richard touched on this) it's a power play and because he wants her to prove his loyalty to him before turning her into a Dalek and also because he made the same offer to Jobel, but he refused so Davros now has a vendetta against him and he clearly takes sadistic glee in manipulating the woman that loves him into killing him. I think that whole subplot is a terrific way to develop Davros' character and to show how much of twisted fuck he is. Also, you say that they've lost what to do with Davros' character and he keeps on doing the same things. Um.... Davros running a funeral home and creating new Daleks out of certain dead bodies and using the other bodies to create food to solve the famine problem on a planet as a money-making scheme to become the "Great Healer" isn't different enough for you? I mean, I'm glad you enjoyed this story but that was a really weird thing to say about Davros in this of all stories. One thing I will agree with you on is that Davros luring the Doctor to Necros is a little weird, but that's such a minor problem and doesn't have any negative impact on this story whatsoever imo.

I think the reason why part 2 was labelled as “part 3” because this story was repeated on bbc two in the 90s it was split into a four parts. So that’s probably why part 2 was accidentally labelled as part 3.

Love this one. I'm a known sucker for sparkling dialogue and it really sparkles here. I definitely agree that it would probably be improved by getting the Doctor and Peri involved a bit more a bit sooner, but otherwise, a really cracking script. Davros' "consumer resistance" line is one of my all-time favourites. Plus pretty much everything Orcini and Kara say throughout. And then you get Alexei Sayle and his Funk Cannon. Yep, love it. And yeah, it's a bit weird. But also, strap in for the rest of the (glorious) 80s... :D

The last scene was meant to end with The Doctor saying Blackpool because the first story of Season 23 was meant to be set in Blackpool. They already had sets built and they were due to start filming but The BBC originally cancelled the show until A Doctor Who fan club got angry so they put the show on an 18 months hiatus

"The Nightmare Fair" was in advanced scriptwriting stage, but no sets had yet been built, nor had filming dates been confirmed. Indeed, they'd only just pencilled in Matthew Robinson as director when the hiatus was announced.

My knowledge of Eleanor Bron's work is basically her role in "Help!" as Ahme, and her two appearances in Doctor Who (in "City of Death" as one of the Art Gallery Visitors alongside John Cleese, and here in "Revelation of The Dales" as Kara). Sounds like I need to catch up a bit if she's done Hammer Horror. I think I'd heard that she was in a version of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" as well. Btw, the original version of season 23 was going to start with the Doctor taking Peri to Blackpool where the story goes they were to encounter the Celestial Toymaker in "The Nightmare Fair". Unfortunately the 18 month "hiatus" happened and they ended up scrapping that story line along with everything else they'd planned and going with "The Trial of a Time Lord" instead.

The next season has all one title "The Trial of a Timelord" but it's broken into for segments. The DJ is played by comedian Alexei Sayle who is best known as the Balowski Family/Various roles in the 80's british sitcom "The Young Ones". Jobel who you would know Alex as Mr. Copper in a future Doctor Who episode with David Tennant "Voyage of the Damed" played by Clive Swift who is also best known for the long suffering husband Mr. Bouquet pronounced Bucket in the 90's sitcom "Keeping Up Appearances".

Eric Saward kept The Doctor to a minimum in this story, instead writing extensively for the supporting characters. He later revealed in interviews that he thought Colin Baker had been miscast as The Doctor. Pip Baker and Jane Baker later commented that Saward's treatment of The Doctor in this story was a sign of how all was not well behind the scenes on Doctor Who at the time.

The shot of people walking down hallways that roll up in episode 1 is an example of the use of the Quantell Paintbox, which was the primary way they created digital video effects in the 1980s at the BBC. Another memorable example of use of this piece of technology would be the effects used in Castrovalva that made the place look like it was it was folding into itself. The Quantel Paintbox [1] was a dedicated computer graphics workstation for composition of broadcast television video and graphics. Produced by the British production equipment manufacturer Quantel (which, via a series of mergers, is now part of Grass Valley), its design emphasized the studio workflow efficiency required for live news production. 1) I agree 100% with your statement about Colin Baker being a good Doctor, but needing better stories. 2) In answer to your speculation, this story is popular with fans, and has rated at the top of all the Colin Baker stories in multiple polls over the years. 3) Eleanor Bron, who looked so familiar to Richard, was never in any Hammer Films as far as I'm aware. She did appear in Help! with the Beatles, she played the doctor who tells Michael Caine's character that he has tuberculosis in Alfie (the only female character in that film who is apparently not susceptible to Alfie's womanizing charms) and was the main love interest in Bedazzled, with Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. She was also John Cleese's fellow art lover in his Doctor Who cameo in City of Death. 4) The other actress Richard was trying to place, Jenny Tomasin (Tasambeker) is best known for playing Ruby the maid on the British television series Upstairs, Downstairs. He character doesn't simply disappear, we see her get killed by the Daleks. 5) As for the rest of the cast, Alexei Sayle, who played the D.J., was in The Young Ones and had his own sketch comedy series, Alexei Sayle's Stuff, which featured Pythonesque humor. Clive Swift (Jobel) is perhaps best known for the sitcom Keeping Up Appearances, he returned to Doctor Who as Mr Copper in Voyage of the Damned with David Tennant. The two guys who called in the original Daleks also returned in modern Doctor Who. Trevor Cooper (the chubby one) appeared as Friar Tuck in Robots of Sherwood, while Colin Spaull (the skinny one) was in Rise of the Cybermen as the guy who's abducting homeless people so they can be turned into Cybermen. 6) Gawn Grainger, the actor who played George Stephenson in Mark of the Rani, was at the same time in the theatrical repertory company of Sir Laurence Olivier. When Olivier heard that Grainger was going to appear on Doctor Who, he admitted that he would enjoy appearing on Doctor Who if he was ever asked. Grainger duly repeated this to John Nathan Turner, who was excited at the idea of Olivier appearing on the show, but thinking Olivier would prefer a brief cameo to weeks of recording a multiple episode story, offered him the part of the mutant who attacks the Doctor and rolls around in the snow with him at the beginning of this story. Not surprisingly, Olivier turned it down. 7) The snow was genuine, there was an unexpected squall on the day they were shooting on location, so they just went with it. 8) You may have noticed that when Davros is attacking Orcini (the real Davros, after the decoy head is destroyed) you can see that Davros' chair is hovering off the ground. This predates the more famous shot of the Dalek going up the stairs in Remembrance of the Daleks 9) Davros' fingers getting shot off is why he has a metal robotic hand in the modern series, a nice bit of continuity. 10) This is the last story aired before the series went on an 18 month hiatus. Michael Grade, who was Controller of the BBC at the time, was attempting to launch the TV series EastEnders, which was kind of a pet project for him. EastEnders needed a large budget to get up and running and Grade decided to postpone several BBC shows in order to use the budgets that would have been used for those shows for the launch of EastEnders instead. No one batted an eye about the other series being postponed, but there was a huge backlash about the postponement of Doctor Who. A story had been leaked to the press that Grade was using the hiatus as a smokescreen and was actually trying to do away with Doctor Who on the quiet. The press ran with the story and Grade suddenly found himself being asked some embarrassing questions. Personally, I have always suspected that prior to this, Doctor Who barely registered on Grade's radar at all. He spoke in subsequent interviews about disliking the show, thinking it looked cheap in comparison to Star Wars, which is an astonishingly stupid thing to say because A) of course a weekly television show wasn't going to be able to compete with the budget of a major motion picture and B) the only person who was in a position to do anything about Doctor Who's budget was Grade himself, but if he had genuinely wanted to cancel Doctor Who, he could have just done it. There was no need to try and be sneaky about it. I suspect that he had no ulterior motives towards Doctor Who at that time, it was just one of several shows whose budgets he wanted to pirate for his pet project and he was caught flat footed when he realized that people were upset by it. Grade then made up some excuses, saying the show was being re-worked (spoilers, it wasn't) and promising the series would eventually return, which it did, 18 months later just like Grade originally intended. 11) Because of this postponement, ideas that were being developed for the next season were cancelled. The next season was supposed to start with a story called The Nightmare Fair, which was supposed to be filmed on location at Blackpool Pleasure Beach (a popular amusement park) and footage had been shot for the end of Revelation with the Doctor and Peri making plans to visit there. With Nightmare Fair off the table, this scene was cut and we end on the freeze frame, before the Doctor can get the word Blackpool out.

Oh I’ve been hyped for this one because Revelation of the Daleks is one of my earliest doctor who stories on dvd I owned. I remember getting it from Woolworths many years ago and constantly watching this story a lot and I mean a lot. So it’s no surprise This is my favourite story from the 6th Doctor’s era. The cast are great, the setting is atmospheric, and this story is so dark and messed up. The Daleks don’t get much to do because honestly this is more of a Davros story. This is Terry Malloy’s best performance as Davros. I really loved him in Resurrection of the Daleks but here he’s a bit more Palpatine especially when he uses his Sith lightning. And you have the explanation why Davros has the robotic like claw in New Who because he’s old hand was shot off of course. Nice attention to continuity. This story has a couple of actors who would later be in New Who, Clive Swift who plays Jobel was in Voyager of the Damned as Mr Copper and Colin Spaull who plays Lilt was in Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel, Trevor Cooper was also in Robot of Sherwood. And Also Hugh Walters was in the Deadly Assassin playing Runcible. After this story there was no Doctor Who in 18 months. Next season is season 23 which wasn’t meant to be Trial of a Timelord. It was going to be another run of episodes but those stories were abandoned because they weren’t sure if the show was coming back or not. Those stories would later be adapted into books and audio dramas by Big Finish.

This story is definitely very well-liked by the fandom and for good reasson, this is one the most fascinating Dalek stories ever. It's such an interesting mix of the macabre and the ridiculous. The way the tone veers from one extreme to the next makes it so engaging to watch because it creates such an offbeat, bizarre atmosphere. This is a very unpredictable story to watch and I think that's one of its greatest strengths. The dialogue is stellar and just the best kind of black comedy and the direction by Graeme Harper (he directed last season's masterpiece, The Caves of Androzani) is stellar once again and he manages to give this story a very unique and dynamic look. Yeah, I love this one. It's my favourite story of the season, with Vengeance on Varos a fairly close second. The one big issue this story does have is that the Doctor and Peri don't really have any impact on the plot, but the story surrounding them is so interesting that this doesn't really bother me that much. The rest of the season is very shaky though, S22 is probably my least favourite of classic Who so far tbh. Aside from Vengeance and Revelation, I don't really like any other story that much. I guess The Mark of the Rani isn't bad, but it's very average and whilst I find The Two Doctors very entertaining in places (unlike you two) it still has a lot of flaws. Attack of the Cybermen and Timelash are both bad though. It doesn't surprise me that much that the show was cancelled (temporarily as it turned out) after this season, the show definitely had quite a few issues it needed to resolve at this point. I haven't seen any of the nest season, so it'll be interesting find out alongside y'all whether they were able to!

I love you guys getting in deep on the story and your feelings as you review and try to make sense of things. I love Eric’s very dark comedy myself. Wonderfully surreal, high comedy, drama and yet violent in part. V similar to Philip Martin’s work of the 1970s. V much writers of their time. I think there are some UK cultural reference points that may not travel, like hospital radio and the like, also the DJ is comedian and author Alexei Sayle, and in case you forget to look up Jenny, she was a central character in Upstairs Downstairs, but I’m sure your Dad will have done his research and my helpful message is redundant. Which is why I love watching you both natter and review these eps. Fab stuff. Keep going guys. Love the content.

Oh you watched the 4 part edit done for the USA - where they got to the half way point in an episode and threw in the closing credits - but it's edited back to two parts. The Doctor and Peri's very reduced role is what happens when you have a script editor who doesn't like the lead characters writing his own script and having more fun with his own characters.

This story is the only real example dark British humour in Doctor Who. The so-called tonal whiplash isn't that unusual here in the UK, and is arguably more expected by TV audiences. Eleanor Bron appeared prominently in the 1965 Beatles film Help!, from which Richard may have recognised her.

The level of gratuitous violence this season was cited as one of the reasons the show was (politely termed) 'put on hold '. When you have finished watching classic Doctor Who I would highly recommend checking out the British Sci-fi series Red Dwarf. It started in 1989, the same year classic Doctor Who ended, and still occasionally comes out with new episodes to this day. It only has 75 episodes so it wouldn't take too long to react to.

The script editor totally disagreed with the producer on the casting of Colin Baker as the doctor, so whenever he could he kept the doctor out of the stories as much as he could. The consequences of this disagreement reaches fever pitch next season, the script editor walked out as the last two episodes were about to be filmed and wouldn't let them use his script for the last episode. its a legendary Feud in doctor who history .the courts were nearly involved. Eric Saward, script and series educator, had read Evlyn Waugh's "The Loved One" a satire of Hollywood cemetery culture. That is the foundation (satire). The Mutant in the forest, JN-T apparently offered to Sir Lawrence Oliver, or David Bowie -he wanted as Producer to get Celeb' cameo'. (Thank you, I decline) The Director of this, also did last season's "Adrozani",...he will return to direct in the modern series, Gramame Harper, student of Douglas Canfield. The DJ played by Alexi Sale, British Comedian, improvised much of his patter. This story isn't for everyone but I love it. The only thing I really cant stand are the Doctor not getting involved till episode "3" (the failing of the 2 part 45 minute format) and the Dalek's voices. I hear they turned down the settings on the ring modulator (especially the overdrive) to make them 'more human" but didn't turn it back for the regular Daleks. I don't think it worked either way because it barely has an effect on it and Roy Skelton and Royce Mills sound quite silly. And I'm sure someone has mentioned it but the next season is indeed involving the Time Lords but wasn't supposed to be. There were several stories completely scripted and more coming. The next story was supposed to be the return of the Celestial Toymaker in Blackpool. Because of all the violence in these stories, they "cancelled" the show but after a lot of backlash (including a very so bad it's good music video called "Doctor In Distress") the BBC course corrected and said they were just postponing it to make it better. The show was off the year for 18 months and we got the season you're on now. But the original one would have been completely different.. Big Finish ended up doing them years later.
@MuchWhittering

I couldn't get into this one, honestly. The Doctor and Peri are barely in part 1, and even in part 2 it feels like they're irrelevant to the plot, it'd be exactly the same without them. The end of the story was filmed with the Doctor saying Blackpool. this was meant to lead into the Season 23 opener "The Nightmare Fair", bringing back The Celestial Toymaker (Episode 4 had recently been found, so it was fresh in people's minds) for a story set in Blackpool about deadly video games, which of course were the hot new craze in those days. Sadly Doctor Who was put on an 18-month hiatus, and the original Season 23 was scrapped in favour of what we ended up getting. You may recognise Clive Swift, the "Earth Expert" from Voyage of the Damned, but of course much more famous as Richard Bucket in Keeping up Appearances. And famous to Doctor Who fans for his legendary interview with Doctor Who Magazine, in which he made Harrison Ford look like a hardcore fan. Apparently they considered hiring many real DJs for the part of the DJ in this story, including some guy called Jimmy Saville. Probably best that one was avoided. I know the DVD of this had to be altered to remove a Jimi Hendrix song for rights reasons, dunno if it's back on the Blu-Ray. I assume it's too late, but if not, the way to split Trial of a Time Lord is 4-4-4-2. That's how the DVDs do it.

In fact, a number of BBC shows were put on hiatus at the time, as the BBC wanted to put more money into Breakfast and Daytime TV. Doctor Who was put on pause/hiatus, the top-rated police show Juliet Bravo had its screentime reduced, and iconic shows like Crackerjack and Pop Quiz were pulled entirely, never to be seen again.

@@ftumschk Juliet Bravo was axed completely, its sixth series (late 1985) was its last.

@tapenrust6869 Thanks for that info. Just goes to show that it wasn't a case of Doctor Who being especially singled out, as I said.

@ftumschk Not entirely, but unlike those other shows Doctor Who was still strongly disliked by Michael Grade, and he did use his power to try and cancel it. He knew that cutting it's budget would effectively kill the show.

The next season is one 14 part story. Even though the segments were given individual titles years later
