MrTARDISreviews The thing I really appreciate about these videos and you as a content creator is your positivity. Even in the more negative reviews like Evil of the Daleks, you always find something to be positive about after saying something negative. Tbh, I was kind of dreading this review because of the appearance of Rose Tyler and your well known dislike of the character. And as a huge fan of that character, I was worried this would become a tirade about her (I’m still expecting one with Doomsday). However, I was pleasantly surprised by the exclusion of one here. TL;DR - you’re great and I love ur vids.

That would make sense but the handlebars on the head are made out of tubes which means it’s from Revenge of the Cybermen. The two heads do look similar though.

“You Would Make A Good Dalek” - that’s the line that kills me in this episode, it says look at yourself Doctor, with that spittle of hate dripping down your chin, who are you to judge? It not only makes for a great scene, but invites everyone at home to consider, ‘Wait, are we on the wrong side?’

@HardCorePoration5 жыл бұрын
To me the Daleks were at their best in the new series during Eccleston's run, and that was mainly due to how the Doctor actually treated them. Whilst every Doctor after treats them as a joke, you can seriously buy from Eccleston's performance that the Daleks are a force to be reckoned with. Despite openly mocking them in front of the Emperor in Parting of the Ways, you can tell that was all an illusion from the scene afterwards, where he is resting his head in defeat against the TARDIS door, realising that he killed his own race almost for nothing.
@DalekTheSupreme5 жыл бұрын
I partly agree, but I do feel Eleventh Doctor has a bit of that fear and hatred of the Daleks. He immediately goes into serious mode as soon as the first one appears and beats one up when no one else takes their menace seriously in Victory of the Daleks, and is shouting in fear when locked in a room with several Daleks without guns in Asylum of the Daleks.
@elliotcrossan62904 жыл бұрын
The Tenth Doctor treats them with just as much fear. See how terrified he is when Davros addresses the Subwave Network in The Stolen Earth

Honestly one of the best written and directed episodes of Doctor Who ever. And this isn't even Shearman's best work for the franchise (Jubilee or Chimes of Midnight to me)! Stubagful's summary of it in his best revival episodes made me appreciate the meta aspects of this episode a lot and made it even more genius than it already was.

I often wonder about the world where Shearman not Moffat became showrunner. It’s probably one where we complain about how obtuse and clever-clever the storylines are, while we wonder what would have happened if the Blink guy became showrunner.

Both have the same problem: their stories are overcomplicated and terrifying. This episode is nothing compared to his work in Big Finish.

OK, this might be a bit out of left field, but Dalek has possibly my favourite 'Next Time' trailer (that's the one for it, not the one for The Long Game). The way that trailer showed so much discussion and build up to the Dalek as a terrifying and powerful creature without actually naming or showing it until the very end of the 30 seconds was superb. It made me, as someone whose fandom started with NuSeries 1, excited to engage with such a huge part of the show's mythology. I still get a few goosebumps watching that today. Compare and contrast the Next Time trailer for Bad Wolf, which did the same thing of showing Daleks at the end, but that time it sucked because it spoiled their reappearance, which was an end of episode twist in Bad Wolf, unlike here where obviously the episode is literally called Dalek.
@DalekTheSupreme5 жыл бұрын
Dalek is one of my top three Dalek stories with Genesis of the Daleks and Remembrance of the Daleks. I think you truly touch on why, under Russell T Davies, the Daleks were handled better than under Steven Moffat. Despite what the Doctor says, the Daleks express clear emotion and are manipulative, truly conveying a sadistic intelligence as well as the power to kill. Only Victory of the Daleks under Moffat's run really felt like it treated the Daleks as cunning masterminds in addition to fascist death machines. After Series 5, the Daleks are just grunts with Davros or the Dalek Prime Minister occasionally barking out orders. As much as I enjoyed Moffat's tenure as showrunner (particularly the Eleventh Doctor's run), Resolution is the first Dalek story in nine years that has really portrayed the Daleks as intelligent thinking creatures as well as killing machines.
@samuelbarber61774 жыл бұрын
I love how this episode goes out of its way to rebut many of the points against the Daleks’ usefulness. A sink plunger, you say? That’s going to crush your face. Oh, you’re thinking of pulling up behind it? Well it’s just going to turn it’s Death Ray around. And you think you can taunt it because you can climb stairs (obviously you missed Remembrance?) Well, it’s just going to hover.

Watching this back in the day, a lot of it went over my head. But coming back to it now, i'd say through Eccleston's whole run were some of the best episodes ever made. And the performances he and the supporting cast put in, it just brought it so down to Earth. "You would make a good Dalek" after the Doctor's outburst is simply chilling. Making the Doctor flawed was awesome and made him the hero he needed to be, learning to rise above himself more than anything else.

To this day, this is still my favorite Dalek story, as it not only hits you in ways you still may not expect, even on a rewatch, but in a way it showed just how much the Daleks had broken the Doctor at this point, and just how much more alike in subtle ways The Doctor could be in regards to his hatred for the Daleks.

The key component that causes ao many inter-Dalek conflicts is the ability/inability to process and acdept those genetic differences. While this Dalek commits suicide, you have those like Dalek Sec, Rusty, even the Emperor's human-made Daleks (albeit still filling with self-loathing). Considering Also worth noting that Davros appears to take a slightly mote flexible stance on genetic purity, particularly if it serves and benefits him. Also, love the Ninth Doctor's scathing description of him in this episode.

I appreciate your Dalekcember reviews, and I'm enjoying them. I watched Doctor Who as it came back, and I wasn't terribly happy with some of the changes they made to the show. At the time, I thought Christopher Eccleston was OK; I wasn't terribly happy on the focus on Rose and her issues, nor did I like the Doctor/Rose relationship that seemed to be developing. However, looking back at the series, I still don't like some of the changes they made, but I do think that Christopher Eccleston was terrific in his role as the Doctor, and I'm sorry that he left after only one season. Interesting how that the Daleks were what made the classical series popular, and (per your review), made a big change here in the new series as well.
