Quantel was new and fairly expensive st the time. So was scene-sync, a new method to control multiple cameras with blue-screen effects (Meglos). It's amazing what JNT managed to accomplish at the time, especially considering how the show was seen as old and cheap in the previous season. 40 years on, it'll look cheap either which way, so with luck there will be a proper story and acting to keep a story going once the visuals aren't as exciting anymore.

"You can't fight Time Lords, Romana." "You did. Once". "Mmm. And lost." I don't know why, but that particular dialogue exchange gets me right in the feels. It's very understated, but it's kind of sad that the Doctor, usually the man always ready to fight when he has to, calmly and quietly accepts that he would always lose against the Time Lords. I suspect losing his second self because of them still hurts.

The Time War certainly soured the Doc's impressions on the Time Lords and I'm sure his actions as the War Doc gave him some bravado on resisting them. Though even before then, his experiences with the Trial as Six on top of the affairs of Arc of Infinity and the Death Zone as Five probably soured him further (including how Five Doctors ends with him daring to run away AGAIN.) And if you want to factor in the Wilderness Years media, there's all the shit Eight experienced between Charley and/or whatever the hell happened in the BBC Books.

@stephenmcconnell1000 Жыл бұрын
According to the DVD, the dust you can see getting dispersed when the birds fly away was actually colouring which was applied to their feathers to try to make them look other-worldly, but because they moved so fast it's impossible to notice and all that's visible onscreen is the make-up being shaken off. So as the birds had to have this applied in advance, it was no doubt planned that they were released at that moment. But it is a nice moment.

I don't think the TARDIS malfunctioned and fell into E-Space, I think the Time Lords had one final mission for the Doctor and Romana; this pocket universe was opening up, and they needed someone to investigate it to see if it was a potential threat. After all, the King Vampire was within E-Space, and their kind had once been at war with the Time Lords, and if he was still alive and hostile, the Time Lords needed to make sure he was dealt with properly.

+BionicNinja123. At the time, Tom Baker didn't because he was going through the emotional turmoil of leaving the show. If you watched "The Tom Baker Years" hosted by Baker himself, you'll find he rather liked the season 18 shows he saw in the random clips while saying at one point he'd like to watch them. Facts. You should try them sometime.
@UnchainedEruption7 жыл бұрын
mortalhellion Yeah I remember seeing a clip on KZbin from a convention where somebody asked him if he didn't like the Season 18 outfit, and he replied saying he liked all the outfits he got to wear. I, personally, really liked this outfit too. I think practically everything he wore looked good on him, but if I had to choose, I'd say the brown coat he wore with Romana in the Graham Williams years is my least favorite. I don't know why, but it just felt a bit empty.
@VinchVolt7 жыл бұрын
Tom Baker's emotional turmoil wasn't because of him leaving the show, it was because of a combination of conflicts with John Nathan Turner over how the show ought to be ran (at a time when Baker was at the peak of his prima-donna phase) and his struggles with his own inner demons (specifically undiagnosed bipolar disorder, depression, and his perception of fiction versus reality growing increasingly blurry due to the fact that he had been playing the Doctor both in the studio and for children in public for six years at that point). Nobody knows exactly why Baker left the show, but the most probable reason was that it was because he got fed up with JNT.
@UnchainedEruption7 жыл бұрын
game4brains I've heard people saying that but I've never heard Tom himself say that he left because of disagreements with JNT. Though that is plausible. He used to bully a lot of the writers and directors because he disagreed with the way they were portraying the character. If there is any merit to this rumor, it's likely because JNT wouldn't take that kind of shit anymore (he was pretty adamant about bringing a sense of seriousness to the show). I remember one of the things was that Tom didn't want to wear makeup when being the Doctor, which was another thing he disagreed with JNT over. But now he says he remembers the guy fondly and doesn't hold a grudge against him.

She was, and still is, GORGEOUS! I didn't like this series as much after John Nathan Turner took over as producer. Notice the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" music?

Yes, the scarf most notably. This maroon ensemble pops up again at the start of the Seventh Doctor. He tries on the outfit while searching for his own costumed look.

The maroon coat also shows up in "Mawdryn Undead" - Mawdryn wears it when he tricks Tegan, Nyssa, and the Brigadier into thinking he (Mawdryn) is the Doctor having just regenerated.

I kind of miss this season. Then again I miss everything that had Adric a part of it.... Ouch... Except that part. 💔 Wouldn't it be nice if some Doctor would go back and give him a better bye? Is Adric amongst anyone else's top 3 companions to date (He's tied with Jamie for #1)?
@JoesAnimationHub3 жыл бұрын
he's in my top 10 but in terms of Who I view him as the most integral companion of the show... forget Donna being the most important human of time and space or Martha dunking on the Master... Adric straight up became God Tier... if it wasn't for his slightly inept heroism the human race wouldn't have even existed...
@andrewjohnson18733 жыл бұрын
@@JoesAnimationHub I loved how he constantly observed the 4th Doctor closely and gradually became more and more like him. It's understandable how he became rather testy with The Doctor after he regenerated, first keeping a close eye on him through the process then entering a sort of rebellious teen stage when he didn't like how different the 5th Doctor was in terms of character. Adric was like that small part of the 4th Doctor we no longer had by the end of his role.

Whoniversal fate intervened and did Romana justice. It was also nice though to have her return to Gallifrey thanks to Big Finish as the President. The E-Space trilogy was John Nathan-Turner's best Doctor Who contribution as producer.
@williamnorton95477 жыл бұрын
Mike Basil Romana being President blew my mind, but it shouldn't be much of a surprise.
@UnchainedEruption7 жыл бұрын
It's nothing more than fan-service. If Romana ever did reach the office of the presidency, at least Big Finish could've shown us the circumstances leading to her ascendance.
@azurerainbow46375 жыл бұрын
Surely Romana should‘ve thought that if the Doctor didn‘t return her to Gallifrey after they received a summons from the Time Lords,the Doctor would get severely punished. He lost his 2nd life after being sentenced to exile on 20th Century Earth for a long time for interfering in the Universe‘s affairs.
@neptune044 жыл бұрын
Maybe but Romana might have also been naive about the timelords and what they would do.

@azurerainbow46377 жыл бұрын
Even if the Doctor did bring Romana back to Gallifrey after getting the summons to return her,would she dare challenge the Time Lords to continue roaming the Universe with the Doctor? The Doctor fought them when he was put on trial for interfering in the Universe's affairs after he called them for help to return many soldiers from different wars in Earth's history who were kidnapped by aliens with the help of the War Chief,an evil renegade Time Lord,and lost the battle against his people after they helped him return the soldiers to Earth. Romana would probably be locked up if she defied the Time Lords.
@dazzle19333 ай бұрын
If they had gone back. Romana would have played the dutiful Gallifreyan to have the Time Lords lower thier guard. She would steal a TARDIS and since she is superior to the Doctor in TARDIS mechanics she could probaly adjust the capsule so the Time Lord's can't trace it

It's hard for me to imagine the Fourth Doctor saying things like he's looking forward to seeing how Leela and Andred were getting on. That's the type of pointless continuity which can get in the way (although it was nice to hear Leela being mentioned - I think they asked her to return for this series or the next one didn't they?).
@The0thDoctor7 жыл бұрын
They asked her and Sarah to return in the finale episodes to help bridge the gap of 4 turning to 5, however they both declinded, hence bringing in the 3 new companions.

The Doctor could've hypnotized Romana to go back to Gallifrey after she said that she didn't want to go back. The Doctor didn't even bother to try to call on the Time Lords to help him after he, Romana & K-9 went into E-Space by mistake.
