I do like the line about whether the Doctor chose John Smith because it's popular or is it poplar because he used it for so long. However my inner nerd reminded me that it was Jamie who made it up as an alias for an unconscious Doctor in "The Wheel in Space" when Jamie saw the name of the manufacturer of one of the instruments.
