I love that Patrick and Jon are in their Doctor Who costumes (so is Colin but I assume under contract) whilst Peter is in a suit. I imagine by that point he was a young enough actor that he didn't want to get typecast by constantly appearing as the Doctor, whilst the other two were just like "Fuck it, we like this job".

+MeBeMat It's rather funny; Patrick Troughton advised Peter Davison not to spend too much time as the Doctor to avoid typecasting, but Troughton kept returning to the role as often as he could; both for charity specials, the Three Doctors, the Five Doctors, and even the Colin Baker episode The Two Doctors.

Yes but they were at different stages in their career. Davison has also returned to the role a few times and is often the past Doctor of choice for events (e.g. he was the one in studio for the announcement of Calpaldi; he fronted The Five~ish Doctors Revisited) when he's now at a similar phase that Troughton was at in the 1980s.

Its awsome how two incarnations of the doctor didnt get along with one another on the show, although in real life Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee got on very well. And you seem to get a lot of that sort of thing between the actors who played the role, Sylvester Mccoy was friends with Paul Mcgann, and Jon Pertwee and William Hartnell had worked together on something (cant remember what) long before either worked on doctor who.

The show's producers were trying to do something different, and Tom himself wanted to break the audience's association of him with the part. That's why he cut his hair too. Unfortunately it didn't work and he didn't get many parts afterwards, it's only once he realized Doctor Who is all he'd be recognized for later in life that he decided to come back to it. Nobody else would hire him.

UranusRemixer During the 90's was the sober realization that pretending to break ties with Doctor Who would not save his career, so there was no point to do so anymore. If you see interviews of Tom in the 80's after he cut his hair, he can't even bring himself to call Doctor Who by its name when referencing it. Compare that to the 90's where he was doing cheesy commercials starring as the Doctor.

I'm sure there were replicas they could have used (like in 2007, or here with the Second Doctor not wearing his original costume), but it might've hurt the previous auction's 'continuity'. Good on Peter still showing up, since he ended up having no involvement in the 'sketch' (argument with three of the Doctors and Terry).

Around this time, Tom was probably trying to distance himself from Doctor Who - for example, not appearing in the 20th anniversary special. So that would be why he's not here. Either that, or he was busy and just couldn't show up.

I think he actually had fears of the opposite kind, that the Doctor was becoming too associated with him and nobody else would be able to play it; he also told the Radio Times "I had left Doctor Who because I think I'd run my course", so not really typecasting, just fed up.
