Part of the reason classic-who fans regard this story so highly is because of Gabriel Woofe's voice as Sutekh. Most classic who villains were over the top theatrical. He was one of the first to whisper almost all his lines. It gave the character a confident and patient quality. He wasn't manically ranting. He would quietly and confidently tell you "i'll kill you soon soon" and you'd believe him. Nowadays quiet villains are more common. Back then on TV actors tended to go over the top with their performances when playing villains. The story isn't without it's problems, but i consider it to be my favorite Baker story.

That's what clued me in too. RTD left hints while pelting us with red herrings to the point it was raining fish. Even up to the last moment using the masters theme, having the cloud called 'the beast' and Gabriel Woolf speaking up. A well earned twist imho.

I think one of the issues with some of the earlier classic Who is that stories are spread out over multiple episodes, so it's very easy to end up filling time with too much running about and hiding etc. When the standard is a 'one story one episode' then the writers use every minute to squeeze more story in, and so we've come to expect that. I was very aware watching this today that to a modern eye the effect are all a bit shonky, and the mummies made me smile with their bandaged Ugg boot feet and oven glove hands - but at the time this went out we didn't expect any better on a TV budget- and you just imagined something great based on the visuals in front of you. I think the idea of what Sutekh is makes his reappearance very high stakes. He's an all-powerful god who was imprisoned forever - first by the Osirens, and then by The Doctor. He is going to be well bent on revenge!

This story has one of the most infamous bloopers that went to air... while not terrible, it's at a very dramatic point and also very silly... In the moment when Sutekh stands, it's likely the cushion he was sitting on stuck to the costume... so if you look carefully, you'll see a little while hand holding down the cushion, then discretely slide away.... still hilarious

This story was part of DW's "Gothic horror" era. Pretty much every story from "Terror of the Zygons," to "The Invasion of Time" is Gothic horror. The difference in FPS is because all studio filming was shot "live-to-videotape," the same way soap operas are. Location filming was shot on film (22mm or 35mm, I can't remember which). Shooting on film is usually 24 FPS, while live-to-videotape is around 60 FPS.

With the extras for WHO dvd and blu, some get very creative. One for this story, "OH Mummy" Seutekh is alive, living in suburban England, and much more mellow. He wears the Mask. He has a pet Rabbit, Neil -"Neil before Seutekh" is said gently to the bunny. The God works delivering milk to homes, "I bring the gift of milk, from Seutekh!" 🙃

The house they filmed at was owned by mick jagger who allowed the filming as he occasionally watched and enjoyed the show.... this story originated the "u.n.i.t dating problem" whereby the 3rd dr stories were set in 70s but this story dates it differently... its also the first story where Sarah says "can't we just leave as I'm from the future and so the world can't have ended" and so he shows her the new future... they did the same thing in this current season with the beatles episode (another hint RTD used about sutekhs return)... finally, it scared the shit out of me when I first watched this back then.... lol

Classic Who is often a slow burn. The stories feel lived in because so much runtime is spent with things would seem to vreate boredom in younger audiences. I grew up on the classics and have a fondness for them. For you to not enjoy a story regarded by many as an all timer is surprising. I think he has been brought back because of you have three options as RTD. Rely on recycling a Dalek/Master/Cyberman plot line. Create something new which might hit or miss. Or comb through the show's history for a dangling thread like this one. Other villians like Omega or the Mara would also be great to revisit.

It doesn’t have to be something like new who. There’s been so much classic stuff I’ve really enjoyed. This one just didn’t work for me.
