The first Doctor's appearance is more likely to be from the Tenth Planet - HIS first regeneration episode defeating Mondas cyberman no less - he was also reluctant so my guess for the Christmas episode is they both come to terms with the change. Also as Missy's first episode was her and the cyberman - did she take all the cybermen on the bottom level after her regeneration and so she already saved the day and Nardole and the remaining humans are safe?

Death in Heaven implied Missy spent ages creating an army of Cybermen out of dead people on Earth, so I would say no. She likely left immediatly (her memory was foggy if you were paying attention) and then ended up on Earth at some point for her Series 8 plan.

Hartnell also wasn't in the 3rd episode of that story, due to his extreme illness. So this is probably the explanation for his disappearance -- he knew he was going to regenerate for the 1st time and didn't want to, so he went away to try and suppress it. Can't WAIT for the 2017 Christmas special !!

So many directions this could go. With Episode Four of Tenth Planet, Moffat could re-create (live action) the events leading up to the first regeneration. Another theory could be this is from "The Roof of the World" and Phil Morris may have a Christmas gift of "Marco Polo" for us all in the found story department. I find it interesting too that his companion this season was named "Bill" = Bill Hartnell. Likely a coincidence but it would make for another neat tie-in.

Yeah, it's obviously the Tenth Planet. I re-watched the final episode and it seems like in the Doctor Falls we saw the 1st Doctor wandering the North Pole after he exited the Cyber-ship. Right after the plot-convenient dissolution of the Cybermen Ben went and freed the Doctor and Polly, and I bet the Doctor already felt like regenerating but didn't want to because it was his first time doing it and he must've been really scared. So he exited the ship and started wandering around, trying to shake it off when he bumped into himself some 1600 years older who also doesn't want to regenerate. TARDIS _was_ indeed trying to make a point and though this point is really obvious, I'm still looking forward to the Christmas special!

True.. that was a fantastic moment. I liked how 12 uses 4's The Genuine Article and then 1 is shown to have already used it (although we've not seen that before). I also thought the 2 Masters was handled delightfully. By the way I'll eat my hat if visually and thematically and in every other way that isn't Antartica.. the scene of the 'First' regeneration (from 1-to-2) brought on by the Mondasian Cyberman invaders in the Tenth Planet. I love the way the original Cyberman and their clunky looking tech was re-asserted and embraced by the episode, especially the voice and the horrible bag-like unfitted shape of those early suits back in the 60s, before they were tidied up. Capaldi was brilliant, and the tone was stern enough to support the character work. Was a pity with similarity to some previous storylines. Beginning to think The Doctor's world has some type of Mandebrot quality, and actually that would make sense.

I strongly disliked everything but the final scene with David Bradley. My mind shrivelled with cringey embarrassment when the sentient puddle Bill faced for about 10mins showed up to save the day. Furthermore how can you not only throw away the cybermen in your episode but two masters?! Even with an extended time both 'enemies' were criminally underused.

Yeah except Hell Bent squandered the opportunity to have a Gallifrey as the main villain finale and the episode ended up being complete shit, this episode was completely amazing. And that was Clara's first episode, and that version of Clara died in that episode, so it's nowhere near the same thing. This was a good story arc to end Bill's character. I'm glad they never pretended Bill was dead, the undoing of Face the Raven is the worst thing I think Moffat ever did. And yes, I know she still technically died, but the WAY she died via Hell Bent was dumb as shit and I wish she just wasn't in the episode and instead we finally got a Gallifrey-centric season finale, which we still need please Chibnall.

You realize that the first easter egg is actually set at the South Pole in 1986, correlating with the defeat of the Mondasian Cybermen in the Tenth Planet. In the original story, the audience does not see the 1st Doctor enter the TARDIS before his regeneration, therefore this allows Moffat to use this knowledge to enable the 1st Doctor to be used again with Peter Capaldi. It would be highly unlikely or infact impossible that it would be Marco Polo because it has no connection with the arching theme of regeneration and over more there is no proof that any actor/actresses have been announced to play Ian, Barbra and Susan, or else this would have been mentioned earlier in this year. Double check your sources.

BUT I think I loved (even more) the scene as Missy is stabbing the Master. How she explains how she loved being him. The words she uses just perfectly describe him. It was beautiful in its own way.

The sequence at the end is actually from the Tenth Planet story and Moffat has cleverly written it around a real-life gap in the story continuity. Hartnell at this time was quite ill and couldnt do all the filming so there is a gap between him walking out of the arctic base in that story and his companions finding him later on slumped at the Tardis console so, realising that this gap in continuity co-incided with the first Doctor's oncoming regeneration Moffat has written this scene where he is between the base and the Tardis and will run into Capaldi (who was brought there by the future Tardis, presumably hoping that the first Doctor will make him see sense and allow himself to regenerate) so that they can create a kind of "lost" adventure with the two of them which fills in the gap and explains the missing scenes from that first story.Can't wait till Xmas!!!

No, have to disagree with you about Bill's ending. A complete copy of Clara's ending, and just as bad. They should have needed Bill as the Cyberman. I loved the finale, which is a change for Moffat, up until Bill and that damn water pilot. I hope Bill never comes back now. Though I did really enjoy Simm's Master and loved it when he shot Missy. No one messes with him, not even herself!

Yes on Missy and Master - the Dematerialization circuit bit was a riot, and then I wasn't surprised to see Missy get an upper hand on Simm's Master with the dagger. But to have him -then- sneakily shoot her on his way out.. that triggered geek bigtime. That unresolved duality is perfect for the character. AND the Doctor's desperation to bring them BOTH in, as his accent lost its elevation and became gritty.. beautifully done. I was very happy with the finale mostly. This gets close to Turn Left quality. Bits of spaceship in green fields have been done before in Doctor Who (there as the episode where the TARDIS became scattered across a planet). Have alsways liked the visual impact of that. Reminds me of some of the best of the 80s.

The thing is Clara was a bitch and I don't feel she EARNED such a happy ending. Whereas as Bill was lovely and I really didn't want to see her be stuck as a Cyberman. Furthermore Clara getting brought back from the dead ended up being the main plot of Hell Bent which was infuriating. Whereas in this Bill getting saved by the pilot was something that happened at the end. Bill was stuck as a Cyberman for the lions share of the episode and we got some great and sad moments from that. Clara being a Dalek wasn't really used as much or in the same way. It was put as a twist ending to Asylum Of The Daleks and as a dramatic climax to The Witches Familiar when Missy tried to trick the Doctor into shooting Clara. These are very different things and I'm saying all this as someone who is usually very critical of Moffat.

The only thing i hated about this episode is john simm's death. Moffat waits all this time by introducing missy, only to bring john back. The most annoying thing is that we now know that the master is dead by the stab wound. Call this nit picking but i wanted to see more of john simm after this episode. He is, at least in my eyes, the best master.

Yeah I see what you mean. I personally thought it was a perfectly appropriate send-off for him though. That last shot of him, I feel, perfectly reflected his character arc, with him being on a clearly self-destructive downward cycle, but with his own pride stopping him from doing anything to escape, even going so far as to kill himself rather than attaining that absolution and redemption he internally desires so much. However, I definitely wouldn't have minded a little more of Simm's good old flamboyance. Besides his creepy narcissistic dancing with his future self, he doesn't really get a chance to show off that original manic showmanship attitude, which for me was a bit of a shame.

Brian G. That is true, however the master could survive as when the master becomes missy he could agree with the master, therefore the master could continue. The only thing is the last shot with simm, i personally saw no regeneration energy. Knowing the master he has avoided death many times and even escaped the time lords after the end of time, so who knows.

Well thematically I think John Simm's reached his conclusion, now that he's in my opinion reached the greatest height of his evil and folly, going so far as to deny himself redemption out of his pride. His role by my understanding has been to exemplify all the nastiest qualities of this overarching character of the Master, in all his proud and misguided evil, and I think Simm Master's last moments in the episode really portray that. As for the regeneration bit, well Missy did say it would take a while to really kill him, so I'd imagine this is happening before he reaches the point of needing regeneration, presumably from blood loss.

My theory (and sorry or my english) is that Missy is NOT the previous regeneration of Simm's Master. She never said that she will be the next one, she costantly avoided the answer by making jokes (welcome in the sisterhood and so on), so I think that between Simm's Master and Missy will be other regenerations that progressively will turn from a evil and careless Master (like Simm's one) to a "good" Master that want to stand with the Doctor. This could explain why and how a maschilist, evil, selfish Master will become a woman, breaking good and in love with the Doctor (we can see those things already, in a initial stage, with the Simm's Master in Ten's era). And this also can explain the apparent cyrcle: Missy is really that as the last (that we know) regeneration of the Master, but Simm's Master is not dead and we already know that he will take the TARDIS, so we can suppose that he will regenerate into another Master and so on. So Missy could be his future-future hiself.

This was such a great episode. So many feels. So tragic, but so beautiful. My favorite moment was the doctor explaining the tragedy of regeneration. He can't just keep becoming someone else. It gives it weight and truly makes it hurt to see him regenerate even if he does get to continue living or perhaps is forced to.

At this point I actually prefer Rick and Morty to Doctor Who. Not only is Rick and Morty absolutely fantastic (if u haven't watched it yet watch it before season 3 starts) but doctor who has been pretty bad over the past few years. This season was the best since season 6. 7,8,9 were not the best in my opinion and even then season 6 was pretty meh aswell.

I'm the Doctor, the original you might say, is a first Doctor line from The Five Doctors special. When Capaldi lands in the snow I would say the first Doctor is on his way to regenerate as well in the Arctic at the end of his last story and the first cyberman story The Tenth Planet, which is a nice closed loop for Capaldi to go out on with his Doctor being the first of a new life cycle as well.

I'd say the 1st Doctor at the end of this episode is heading to his Tardis , contemplating his first regeneration in the final moments of the Tenth Planet along with his reluctance to change into somone else. this mirrors the 12th Doctors' current struggle and reluctance to change now. by the end of the Christmas special they will both have come to terms with 'change' and you'll probably see them both regenerate; with the original version being shown or even recreated with Bradley.

My favourite fan boy moment was Gomez and Simm discussing how to kill the Doctor. "I know you've fallen" is a reference to when Anthony Ainley's Master caused the regeneration from Tom Baker to Peter Davidson. I wasn't even ten yet when I saw the reruns on PBS and it blew my mind. I can't wait for Christmas to see One and Twelve together.

I'm just glad we get a new doctor coming - I liked Capaldi just fine, but I really miss the younger Doctors like Smith and Tennant. Capaldi set a new tone for the show and for the Doctor, but it was a good time to move on from his role. I'm excited to see who we'll get next and how it will affect the show and story arch. I really hope we'll get to see more of River song at some point as well as Capt. John Harkness in any form they choose to use. I would even be happy to see him as The Face of bo. Those Russel T. Davies episodes were some of the best in my opinion.

Not only was "The Tenth Planet" the 1st Doctor's regeneration story (like the Christmas special will be for the 12th), but it was the story that introduced the Cybermen (who are responsible for the 12th needing to regenerate).

I think the last scene is a call back to the Tenth Planet. The Tenth Planet is the 1st Doctor's last story, the first one featuring the Mondasian Cybermen. Right before the 1st Doctor regenerated, he left his companions behind and rushed back to the TARDIS by himself. Later on his companions found the Doctor back in the TARDIS, then his face changed into the 2nd Doctor right in front of them. So there's this theory of the christmas special taking place when the 1st Doctor was alone before he went back to the TARDIS...

Chris McWilliams I actually liked it when it was announced that Capaldi was going to be a doctor :) When Tenant regenerated to Smith, I stopped watching for 4 years :/ I think what messed up Capaldi's doctor was because of Clara and Capaldi had to keep some Matt Smith in him so that Clara wasn't Alienated. Capaldi being this old grandpa rockstar doctor didn't really work well. I'm glad they went with the proffessor approach in series 10 :)

I can't' disagree with that. For me the main thing that hurt him (other than the stupid sonic sunglasses and the guitar stuff) was that they had a really good thing going having this Doctor be more like the original one, cold and calculating, willing to sacrifice people he knew couldn't be saved if it got him something, some bit of information or insight to save other people. There's a real lack of consequences on the show right now. Other than random 'red shirts' no one dies and it all just seems so sanitized. The issue seems to be that the younger fans, people who have never seen the original series can't seem to stand a Doctor who isn't young and hot and warm and fuzzy and saves everyone, all the time, and this fantasy almost 'magical' saves that Moffett has been using to prevent Companions from dying are really, really wearing thin, it's a good thing he's leaving and hopefully the new guy will have the guts to bring the show back around.

That's going backward. Forget the past actors coming back to take over the role anew. That's never been done and is very unlikely to be done now. Find a good actor about 35 to 47 (give or take). Someone who can project the needed gravity and the world-weariness of a man of the Doctor's age and experience. Drop making the Doctor a sex symbol for the tween girls drop trying to make him warm and fuzzy. Oh and for the love of Gallifrey, IF you bring the Master/Missy/Whatever back then drop making he/she/it batpoop crazy and give them plans that actually make sense and not just have them doing whatever 'because I'm crazy'.

I really likes this episode until they had no idea how to fix the problem so the majic puddle to fix all the problems. like it did the classic moffat and just go so lost in haveing an interesting plot and beaing clever that it just got confusing. like when I was five I could follow doctor who plot lines but now I'm 18 I can't. also expecting the audience to have watched the first episode of the season to vaguely understand plot is really annoying and doesn't work in a show like doctor who

In regards to the episode itself. I'd say I liked it, but... I also feel like they wasted the Master's potential as John Simm. I can still remember his 'prime minister' episode (which was an entire story arch over 3 episodes... that was epic). He was so amazing and insane in that episode. Sure.. There were a million and one hints in this episode that a female doctor might be a thing and, for the show's sake, I hope it doesn't happen. I feel that casting a female as The Doctor would be a gimmick instead of a serious choice. If it was a choice based on acting skill and talent alone, though, I would be all for it!

I really feel like that people will consider it a gimmick regardless of wether the actress is perfect for the role. Just because she's a woman. I for one am all for it, there are plenty great actresses that could fit the role and offcourse they would choose the one best suited for that role. It would be a nice change of pace quite frankly and it indeed does seem like they hint towards that in the episode. Especially considering Missy is gone now. It will be hell for that actress though, because she will undoubtly be judged harder just because she's a woman than any other doctor we've had.

A token black/gay/female/whatever minority character is never good for a show imo. It goes without saying that whoever plays the Doctor needs to be a) a gifted actor, and b) capable of bringing something interesting to the role. However, there's absolutely nothing wrong with saying, "The next Doctor will be an Asian man," or, "The next Doctor will be a black woman", and then casting a (highly talented) actor based on that. If that thought leaves you feeling sad or anxious, it shouldn't. Doctor Who is a long-running program. And long-running programs only survive by constantly doing new and different things. The whole "white male Doctor" gimmick has grown stale-- hardly surprising, given that they've been using and reusing that gimmick for 36 seasons now. And refusing to replace a stale gimmick with a fresh one is a surefire recipe for turning a long-running program into a cancelled one. So instead of clinging to a worn-out shtick, let's give the showrunners permission to keep the show fresh and interesting, so that it can run for another 10 or 20 or 50 years And don't worry. There will still be plenty of white male protagonists. I promise. :-)

I want a female Doctor personally. I see no reason why not.

I think we'll eventually have a female Doctor, but I don't think it'll be the next Doctor. It may be the one after that, or even the one after THAT, but I believe it will eventually happen, and I think it would be great (even though I can almost hear all of the heads exploding across the Internet at the thought of it).

I think it would be ok to have a female doctor but not just yet, as they'd probably be more focused on making people happy about it instead of the actress' capability of being the doctor and the writing. if that makes sense

You missed Marinus 1st doctor story with Voords. Capaldi mentions Marinus so cannonising World Shapers. The 6 blocks of ice indicate The 10th planet not Marco polo the original cybermen story and where Hartnell becomes Troughton. If the BBC are after a young Troughtonesque Doctor Andrew Lee Potts from Primeval would rock the part.

Another great post I love The Doctor, I just wish this season would have been better so we could get more video's from you. My favorite part was with the two Masters at the end. Personally I hope they make him/her a ginger that would be really cool to see, again thank you for another great video.
