Steven Moffat's episode 'The Girl in the Fireplace,' like 'Fear Her' and 'The Idiot's Lantern', lived entirely in its own sound world, meaning there was virtually no music from previous episodes, and nothing from them that I reused later. Steven had already shown how brilliant, inventive and romantic he was in Series 1's 'The Empty Child'. He somehow managed to fit the same amount into just one episode in Series 2: a romantic life time packed into a few minutes. I used similar instrumentatino to the score for the mini-series Casanova as both dealt with love, loss and memory. - Murray Gold

What most amuses me about this episode is how Madame du Pompadour isnt the onlyt person that meets The Doctor as a little girl, grows up with him as an imaginary friend, develops a crush on him, pushes him against a wall and kisses him when she meets him again (despite the fact that shes already engaged), is separated from The Doctor due to factors he can't control, and eventually dies of old age without ever seeing him again. Really original, Moffat. Thought no one would notice, did you?

+Commander Karl No. She's very different. Amy doesn't know the Doctor like Renett did. She's not even close in intelligence to Renett and she has a completely different personality. It's not that I don't like Amy before you would say that but I'm just being honest. Renett was extremely smart and had a really fast understanding. She was also fearless and clever. Renett was the possible best lover for the Doctor as she knew him more than anyone ever did and she was extremely smart as well just like the Doctor but as a human. If anyone it's Clara who's the closest to her since she did enter to the life stream of the Doctor and helping him along the way also she was very clever too but funnily enough still not as clever as Rennet. Honestly they had a better chemistry in one episode then Riversong and the Doctor arc. With River it felt forced but with Renett it was brilliant it was almost perfect. They only seen each other a very few short periods yet they loved each other so much and they knew almost everything about the other. The Doctor loved her SO MUCH that he was ready to leave Rose and Mickey beyond to (possibly) die. And yes I do suspect he always had an emergency at moments like that but remember he never did anything like this ever again which really a proof of much he loved her. Renett was that perfect lover the Doctor could never have. It happened with most of us as the one we loved the most (before we found our true one) we either couldn't get or something terrible happened separating us even if we could have been PERFECT together. Saying that Amy is a copy of her is an insult to Renett's character because she was so much deeper and much more complex than Amy even tho she only had a single episode.

This reminds me of a finale of a "Death of Doctor Who" story where, while dying, he makes his last stand against his ultimate foes and then in the arms of his loyal companion, like Sarah Jane Smith or Rose Tyler, he says his famous last words: "It's ok....I did it...I ended it....I stopped the war....allons....y..." before he dies without regenerating. I had a dream about it when I watched the moment David Tennant left the show. It was about two years ago and I still remember it.

Now THIS was a good Moffat episode. In my opinion, Girl in the Fireplace was one of the best episodes in the RTD era (and considering how much I like this era of Doctor Who, that's really saying something). I just wish Moffat could write like this nowadays. Even though there are some episodes in the Moffat era that I genuinely like, such as The Doctor's Wife and Heaven Sent, I usually find his episodes completely unwatchable.

All the way from 2006, when there still felt like there was hope for me, 25 years old at the time, so much promise... 18 years later still trying to figure out where the time went....Where did it all go wrong...Still a beautiful song!

This music made the last five minutes or so of that episode even sadder than they already were.

Its a strangely beautiful episode, wonderfully acted and pulls on the heartstrings, but as critics have pointed out, surely he would have known she met an untimely death. Anyway nitpicking, one of my favourite episodes, the sad ones always are.

It sounds like a music box and you can almost hear the ticking of the gears. And it brings me to the end of the episode and makes me feel very bad for Ten, again. :( I need to re-watch David's episodes now!!!
