I went to the BFI for this one with a few reservations - and I came out floored. Every few minutes, there was a brilliant new decision or alteration that pushed the envelope with what these reimaginings can do. I agree that I don't know if this 3D style and creative direction would work for every missing episode, particularly given the ease with which Toymaker can lean into the surreal and abstract anyway, but it was doubtlessly the right decision for this one and the entire team deserves our hearty congratulations.

Josh has just done something incredible, they single-handedly convinced me to give this animation a shot. I saw the trailer and I absolutely hated it and was more than happy to skip this release. I thought it looked terrible from the limited footage and The Web of Fear dampened any good will I had. But after watching this video, I became more willing to give it a shot. I just thought that “if Josh Snares, the biggest Web of Fear animation critic I know, doesn’t mind it then it’s probably decent”. After finishing this video, I found the odd clip online and it looks a lot better than the trailer made it look. I don’t know whether I’m less cynical now or whether the trailer just looked bad on its own but I’ve definitely been convinced to watch this animation now. The Celestial Toymaker is one of my personal favourite missing stories based off of how much I loved the reconstruction and so I’m quite excited to see it reimagined Thank you Josh for changing my mind, keep up the great work 😁👍

Great review Josh, and this has me really enthused for picking up the animation as soon as I find the time to haunt the local JB, so thank you very very much. I know well the tension between the two camps A and B, and it seems with the addition of the photo reconstruction there’s probably something to satisfy most of those two groups of fans. I am happy watching a reconstruction or animation that caters to either of these (I’m aware many are allergic to Cura telesnap recons) and the artistic choices in the full colour animation sound as though they’d improve the story for me (I’ve found the previous recons quite underwhelming, with episode 2 very hard to listen to). I’m with you in wanting more Hartnell animations to come, though obviously with so much more of Troughton’s stories having been lost it was right to try to reestablish as much as they have so far. Marco Polo has always been a favourite of mine although modern audiences would find it interminably slow, so I imagine it might be treated to a cut down; and the diversity of locations would involve a lot of work. Myth Makers would also be great for what they could do with expansive sets of an ancient city under siege (I find it impossible to listen to the versions which haven’t been given the MArk Ayres treatment, with the pitch stabilisation). As always, love your work. Best wishes

I know this is 2 months late, but if you ask me, you should never change the audio. The whole point of the animations is to add a visual element to the audio, and if you make a change that doesn't match with the audio, you shouldn't make that change to begin with. I also think that the animations should always fit with any surviving episodes so that people like myself who prefer to watch surviving episodes whenever possible can do so. This is what makes animations like The Abominable Snowmen and The Underwater Menace quite difficult to follow in some areas.

Watch it earlier today and found it a fantastic watch. The story itself felt very much like a bottle neck type of story with minimal sets, etc. The animation brings it up a couple of magnitudes with the set designs, camera work, and other changes to make it a very good story. The art style works very well on this, as the directors said on the making of, there's now a trend of 3d animation having these more painting like effects rather than photorealistic. I feel like this team should attempt either Marco Polo to exploit the vastness of sets or do something similar to this for the space pirates, especially with the later having less reference material so they can be more imaginative.

The animation really saved this one. The games are really elevated by the funky animation and the jittery movement of the card people was fun. Honestly a lot of the problems in this story are inherent to the original story. The entirety of episode 3 was exceedingly dull and Hartnells vacation taking place during episodes 2&3 means we lose a lot of interaction between the Title Character of the show and the Title Character of the story which were really interesting. But overall, really fun! Glad it's finally happened and hope we get more like this in the future

Haven't watched this yet; I'm saving it for when I reach it naturally on my next trip back through the Hartnell era (so sometime next spring, probably). Glad to hear it turned out well. What I really appreciate about this is the willingness to shake things up with a radically different art style than the mid-00s flash cartoon aesthetic that these typically go for. I'd love to see more experimentation like this in the future.

Recreations tread a difficult ground. Personally, as long as it's true to the story, and doesn't destroy immersion, we should accept it is a re-interpretation. Almost a different media. I enjoy the expanded sets. As long as they're serving the intent or aspiration of the story, I would feel foolish to stick too rigoroursly to what were production constraints of the sixties. We're not at a place technologically speaking where CGI characters are really going to convince anyone of their authenticity. As you say, as long as they're recognisable, especially with some of the story still existing in its original broadcast format. As for adjusting the audio, if it fixes problems, and is well done, I'm in favour. We have impersonators for Big Finish, and that works...

Yaaaaay Josh!! Much love to you from Chicago. Onto the content of the video. I am usually more Camp B than Camp A, but for existing episodes that are being animated I’d rather them stick CLOSER to things like the camera movements and blocking than going all wacky. But the nature of TCT made it make sense to go all wacky for all 4 parts. I think the team behind this could maybe make a decent effort at animating The Space Pirates. My own want for the next animation is The Wheel in Space or The Massacre (I’ve been doing a re-watch from An Unearthly Child and I’ve been loving the historicals way more than I remember the first time I saw them).

Thanks for your video, Josh. 🥰 I’m in Team B although I have no problem with the opinions of Team A! The animation’s fluidity has come a long way since Web of Fear episode three, but The Doctor and Steven’s avatars are very Aunt Sally, as in Worzel Gummidge. I’m otherwise okay with the animation style for this story, but appreciate that purists may be apoplectic. I find it hard to imagine this particular style being appropriate for any other story at present, although once the animators perfect human likenesses, maybe it could work in the future. Who knows? For now, I still lean towards the 2D style of the Dalek animations. ❤️❤️➕🔷

I hope that they do continue to make the animated recreations, then once there's none left to recreate, they should look at doing the audio adventures too. There's 2 with Jon Pertwee, Elisabeth Sladen and Nicholas Courtney from the 90s that would be great to see given this sort of treatment, especially as all 3 are sadly no longer with us. Then there's so much Big Finish stuff to work with. I forget the name of it, but there's one where they deal with Peri's multiple timelines caused by her time with The Doctor, I'd love to see that one animated. One that would be quite easy to do, maybe as a DVD/BluRay bonus feature, would be another 6th Doctor story (I can't remember the title for this one either) where he receives a call from a wrong number but it leads to him helping the woman on the other end. It was a really interesting concept and would probably not take too long to animate. The 6th Doctor and the 8th Doctor really deserve to be represented in animation as they didn't get as much screen time as some of the others. The same goes for the 9th Doctor as he only did the 1 season on TV, although I'm not sure he'd want the BBC doing anything with his audio adventures, at least not while RTD is employed.

im a purist, i just personally hate when big changes are made to the original production. i honestly really do miss the days when these animations werent embellished, when they were made to fill gaps and nothing more. The Faceless Ones feels like the last "gap filler" animation we will ever have. it surprisingly stayed rather true to the original style and telesnaps even if it looked a bit stilted. i guess im just an old fart at heart because these new "embellished" animations just dont do it for me anymore. i want accurate space fillers but i know thats never happening again. that being said, i do think the cgi here is....interesting, if the team can refine it more and more it could be a perfect way to do the more complex "budget nightmare" stories like Marco Polo and Master Plan
@ireallydidntwanttomakeanac5754 ай бұрын
This release for me is mixed. One thing is that this release is made for 16:9, the 4:3 B/W version definitely doesn't do the animation justice as a lot of shots are made specifically for the colour animation. I couldn't help but compare the first episode to Dinopuff's version. Their version captured more of that humanity with the first test as the dolls fail, and the malice with the Toymaker. It had more of that Camp B balance between creative liberty but within more of a budget that the BBC might have increased. Having the dolls be dolls lost that edge for me. Things definitely improved in Part 2 though, I absolutely love the Playing Card character designs. I got more used to the design of Steven, it isn't perfect, but far in a way closer than Hartnell's design. No idea why these colour animations can't seem to nail Hartnell's look in comparison to Troughton. One thing I worried about was the look of the surviving Episode 4. Is it me or did they upscale it? It looked smoother than before rather than that nice remaster of Dalek Invasion of Earth.

I've not watched it yet, but I can see what they're going with and although I prefer the more traditional animation style, if this is easier and cheaper to make, so we're more likely to get future reconstructions, I'm very happy with the result (web of fear very much did not meet that threshold). Storywise, I was really surprised they went with Toymaker to animate - it really does not come out well under modern sensibilities. I'm happy to hear they tackled how shallow and dull the story is by going experimental with the animation to make up for it. I'd be interested to hear how they (presumably) removed the use of a slur - re-record the line? Omit that section entirely? Have Dodo sneeze loudly? As ever, mourning the irony that Steven Taylor, the most handsome companion, has so many episodes that exist only in audio format.

I am still devastated this wasn't helmed by Dinopuff. Also, welcome back to the GOAT.

I haven't seen the Toymaker yet. I had heard it was coming, but last time I checked, it wasn't available in my area, so I kind of forgot about it. I'm not sure about the computer animation, but I'm willing to give it a try... if I gret the opportunity to see it. As to what I'd like to see next, I vote for the Highlanders, just to complete, as far as possible, the Second Doctor. After that, the Massacre. I saw a KZbin recreation of it, and really liked the story. If they were to expand the animations past the missing stories, I'd like to see them do the stories that were originally planned for season 23, like Mission To Magnus for example. I believe Big Finish made audio versions of most if not all.

Great review! Was skeptical going into watching the animation but was blown away. Really added a layer of menace & scale. Loved the special feature with Lisa Bowerman, Peter Purves, & Maureen O’Brien. 74 minutes of them in a Doctor Who themed escape room!

I haven’t had the courage to watch the escape room feature - you’re the first I’ve heard who said they liked it! Haha

@@JoshSnares It’s a lot of fun, although I did worry about them damaging some of the props. From the title sequence, it looks like they filmed 6 more of them, one for each classic Doctor. Hosted by DWM’s Emily Cook.

I liked the The Celestial Toymaker animation a lot more than I thought I would. Like you, I wasn't really a fan of the style/character designs from seeing the trailer. I also prefer 2D animation to 3D...but I really enjoyed the when i got the bluray. I am also slightly iffy on the story itself. I think it is a really interesting concept, but it is so weird and visual, it completely doesn't work as a telesnap reconstruction. I think this is the reason that in the past i didn't like it. but the big sets the fact that the Toymaker really comes off as a God in the animation, and the fact that i can actually follow the games with the visuals....I really enjoyed the story. I also didn't mind the visual changes... I tend to be more of a camp B than a camp A guy.... If it is something like web of fear or the faceless ones (where most of the story is intact) I want the animations to be done in the same style as the show so i can watch the original episodes and watch the animation for only the missing eps... but in something like Evil of the Daleks, Macra Terror or The Toymaker when either no episodes or next to no episodes remain, I feel go wild with the visuals.

I was genuinely surprised at how much I liked this animation. I'm not really huge on the animations in general, and for rewatches I'm significantly more likely to go back to the reconstructions first, but a lot of the visual liberties taken with this one really enhanced my experience with it, so I may actually come back to this one in the future, which is about the highest praise that I can give an animation.

I'd like to see The Wheel In Space animated by the team that worked on the CT tale. I was 9 when Wheel was on TV, and I think that watching it now would refresh my memories of it quite considerably! Let me also say that I enjoyed this review of the CT animation, you made your points very well and had good reasons and examples to back them up. Pleasure to watch this vid! ✅✨💯

I'm yet to watch this myself, but I remember seeing the trailer and instantly going "that's not my Doctor!!!" thanks to the animation style. I absolutely hated it. Then I found myself going back to it, and after considering the concept coupled with the animation, I thought it'd probably the best thing to have done. It looks creepy and weird and I think that matches the tone of the story perfectly, plus the music sounds hypnotic and interesting - and that's just from the trailer! Which I'm now going to go watch again. Thanks for the new video, I missed you

I was floored with the animation and how far we’ve come since Power of the Daleks. And it really made me enjoy the story more compared to previous watches through the telesnaps.

Like you, I see both sides. I feel there has to be respect paid to getting it as accurate as possible, but some creative license if that isn't possible. I personally enjoyed The Toymaker animation, better than I anticipated.

New Josh video! I loved this animation, it’s probably better than the story deserves, and really elevated it into a fun, creepy, nasty little adventure. After Underwater Menace left me cold I was starting to wonder if the novelty had worn off with these animations, so this was a real shot in the arm. I would love to see these guys do The Myth Makers and Marco Polo, and all the other missing M stories. Going back to the flat Underwater Menace style would be a big shame IMO.

My main worry was that the animation wouldn't do justice to how great Peter Purves' bum looked in those tight pants. Maybe that was just me?
