Sutekh was in a Classic Doctor Who story called, 'The Pyramids of Mars', when Tom Baker was the Doctor. Sutekh said, "I am known and feared on a thousand worlds. I destroyed my home planet, Phaester Osiris, and crossed the galaxy, leaving havoc in my wake. Until my brother Horus and 740 other Osirians confronted me on Earth. I was defeated and trapped in a tomb beneath a pyramid; alive, paralysed, held in a force field controlled from Mars."

Neither UNIT, nor even the Doctor, has had to deal with Harbingers until this era. We are introduced to that concept in Devil's Chord, and even the Doctor doesn't witness that Harbinger moment. Only the Doctor seems to know it's a thing, and thus, UNIT has no reason to make the connection -- unlike TARDIS, seeing as they've been around one for most of the show's history. Something happening in a scene in a show doesn't mean everyone in the show suddenly has that knowledge. Now that gods and their harbingers will become a VERY known problem, you can bet money that UNIT will keep their eyes peeled for Harbingers from now on. They've simply had no reason to (until now).

There's also that Sutekh is a genuine mythological character, so even not knowing he's appeared in the show before in some form, he's still a big, scary Egyptian God of Death figure. Like if he'd announced himself as Hades or something. It wouldn't really matter if Hades had already featured in the show or not.

The fact they were able to use the same voice actor from the 70s for Sutekh I think is great for people who know the original story. And he did also voice The beast in The Satan Pit as well (Carla even said 'its the beast' when seeing the shape in the time window). I don't think Mrs Flood will be Susan (I'm half expecting The Rani but who knows). She'll be something significant but I'm thinking a more long term antagonist I do hope though that at the end of this story, the Doctor actually goes to visit Susan. Pyramids of Mars was one of the first Doctor Who serials I watched on local PBS, on a rerun marathon, with my family. Back when TV was broadcast over the airwaves, and families rarely had more than one TV. I was really young, so I had no idea what was happening, but my father had always been a technophile, and we had a VCR, and he recorded the serial so we could rewatch it. It was one of the few Doctor Who serials I saw complete more than once until the internet came around and it was possible to track down episodes. This is like what I went through the first time I read the Legion of Superheroes The Great Darkness Saga. When some old, rarely revisited villain returns and you (in the audience) realizes just how much trouble the heroes are in. It'll probably be resolved next ep, but until then, the week can't be over soon enough.

I would recommend watching Pyramids of Mars its fantastic, one of the best. You seriously need to watch it. Sutekh is leagues above the doctor, the timelords, the master, Davros, the Daleks, the toy maker etc in what he can do. Also Gabriel Woolf who voices him and who voiced the Beast/devil in series 2. Sometimes RTD really thinks he's alot cleverer than he actually is. That H.Arbinger reveal felt like an intellectually insulting "bwahahaha, aren't I clever!" moment. Personally, if I had to guess, I think Mrs Flood could be Susan. The original few Doctors did 4th wall breaks on occasion, Hartnell being the first (and only one to acknowledge he was in a TV show) so chances that she's a Timelord at the very least is pretty high. I'm actually kinda convinced that Ruby is one of these Gods herself. Sutekh was at war with the Ancient Egyptian Gods, trying to overthrow the throne he was meant to protect and in mythology, Ra is usually represented by a Red Sun. A Ruby Sun(day) you might say?

My partner isn't steeped in 'lore' so didn't know Sutekh as a classic villain, but also didn't immediately assume it was. Their assumption was that this was a new thing, bringing in a real Egyptian god, and that worked for them, so I think responses will vary from person to person.

A couple of thoughts. With references to the Gods of Ragnarok and the Mara, RTD is grouping together a group of Classic era god level enemies. I wonder if Fenric is included. All of which may mean they will appear over the next few years. Yes, god level beings exist in classic Who. They were never connected before. However some manifestations might overlap with others. The Sutekh drop was pure fan service for us classic people who are old enough to remember. I was cheering while going "oh feck this is bad". In The Devil's Chord, when the Doctor showed Ruby the ruined future - this was a direct homage to Pyramids of Mars, and RTD has hit anew level of foreshadowing. I don't think Sutekh is the big bad. The shenanigans around Mrs Flood is to be explained. Then there is the Ruby's mum issue. If there is a major reveal, I expect someone more generally known and not something only the diehards know. RTD has always been keeping things open for all new viewers. This smacks of a type of gatekeeping that I don't believe RTD would do. Gabriel Woolf, the voice of Sutekh was also the voice of The Beast in The Impossible Planet. Probably why you are getting vibes of that. Also I wouldn't be shocked if we get an explicit connection. Or it could be left implicit.

Great reaction and review. Sutekh is a villain from the classic show. The fourth doctor, played by Tom Baker, just barely defeated Sutekh, with the help of Sarah Jane. It took hundreds of Osiarans to trap Sutekh the first time. The doctor knew Sutekh was god-like. He showed Sarah Jane the future where Sutekh escaped. The entire universe was dead. The Doctor finally triumphed by trapping Sutekh in a time corridor for 7000 years. He was supposed to have aged the evil Osiran to death, but with all the universe rule changes in the last decade it's not surprising to have him return. As to who will die....if they go by the classic who method ... everyone except the doctor and his companions. Since they are dealing with "deities" now, to win....they will need make a sacrifice. It's my felling that Susan will return, but not sure how. Maybe to simply be that sacrifice.

I think the Black Guardian would have fit this setup better than Sutekh - back in Pyramids of Mars, Sutekh appeared to be a regular flesh and blood alien (still nigh on all-powerful), whereas the Black Guardian was truly something metaphysical. But Sutekh had a perfect storm of writing and performance to make him an icon.

That Sutekh reveal reminds me of when they introduced John Hurt ahead of the 50th Anniversary special, they really cranked up the reveal and then he turned around and although I know the actor, I was like, I don't really understand the significance of this or why I'm supposed to be THIS shocked by it. So I'm inclined to think that it's not about knowing the Pyramids of Mars etc, they were just trying to make it as megahype as possible and in the end you're left being told how to feel about it instead of actually feeling that way. Plus let's be honest, the character design of the CGI Sutekh looks like something from Scooby-Doo 2 Monsters Unleashed, if something that cartoonish popped out and told me it was the Destroyer of Worlds I would be like, have you seen yourself, Pupper?? I did really enjoy this episode overall though and the whole Time Window sequence is my favourite scene of the whole season, I almost feel like the Sutekh thing has overshadowed what is a really good pre-finale in its own right.

As I’m sure many have already commented, lots of cool references for longtime Who fans in that monologue listing the gods alone - here’s an idea post-season finale: you could make a classic / new Who / spinoff viewing list for their stories (Sutekh, the Mara, the Trickster, the threefold deity that is probably referencing the Gods of Ragnarok)! As for them being gods vs aliens, I think there’s been plenty of (admittedly vague) references to them as beings operating outside the normal laws of physics / time / space, which probably makes them view themselves as gods. Sutekh in classic Who was originally the last survivor of an all powerful ancient race called the Osirians.

On the discussion you had at the end - I would note that RTD has never _permanently_ and physically) harmed a companion's family member. Including Rhys in Torchwood. I would be _surprised_ if Carla and Cherry weren't fine by the end of this storyline, even if they're placed in danger at some point within it. Traumatized? Maybe. Physically harmed? It’s weird to see people who don’t know who Sutekh is watching the episode. It would be like Spyfall’s reveal without knowing who the Master is. As someone who grew up with classic Who (or Doctor Who as we called it back then), it left me screaming. It’s a shame it falls flat for people who haven’t seen earlier episodes. I suspected Sutekh would be the big bad because of the hints they’ve dropped throughout this series. Eg They lift a scene directly from _Pyramids of Mars_ in _The Devil’s Chord_ where the Doctor shows Ruby an alternative present day. The Doctor left him to spend an eternity trapped in a time tunnel, so it would make sense that he would be “the one who waits”. He’s also basically The Devil, which would make sense as to why the Toymaker would be scared of him. It would need to be a manipulation of time that he needed to escape - hence the groaning TARDIS. And of course, the cheesy Sue’s Tech (honestly, Russell! Smh)

Sutekh is the last of the Osirans from the world Phaester Osiris. He became paranoid that some other life form would secede him as a supreme being, and decided to devote himself to death, dust, and darkness. In the Dr Who mythos, he is the influence for the Egyptian god Set, and he was entombed by 740 of his fellow Osirans in ancient Egypt, with a relay on Mars containing the key to his prison. He was stopped by the 4th Doctor in 1911, on the grounds where UNIT would have their HQ in the future. Sutekh has appeared in the extended universe, as has aspects and relics of the lost Osiran culture.

I'm kind of curious to see how, or even if, this episode will hold up once the second part has aired. While I definitely enjoyed "The Legend of Ruby Sunday", it is very much a bunch of setup for the finale, primarily 45 minutes of wheel-spinning as RTD moves all the characters and plot elements into place, and with not much in the way of actual narrative substance. And I know a lot of people will write it off as "it's just a part one, of course we're not going to get a complete story", but previous finale part ones tends to have a decent amount of substance, thematic weight and character-based material. And to be frank, I don't think this episode really has a lot of stuff going on in those regards; it takes roughly 20 minutes for the story to even get started with the time window scene, and even then I don't feel like much really happens after that. I love that scene, but we don't really learn anything new about Ruby as a character (and honestly emphasises how little development she's actually had), and the narrative doesn't have much progression. But for all my complaints about the problems of the majority of the episode, those last few minutes - HOLY FRICK! Your reaction definitely highlights how little impact the climactic reveal may have on those unfamiliar with classic Who, but as someone who had seen "Pyramids of Mars" (on that note, you two should definitely check it out once you've seen the finale - it will be a great opportunity to see why Sutekh is a big deal; plus it's a God-tier classic Who story, with Tom Baker and Lis Sladen at their best), I was beside myself with excitement. The buildup to Sutekh's return, with Harriet's ominous speech hyping up the pantheon, Murray Gold's building soundtrack, and the general sense of terror, was just prime material. The performances of the cast are just phenomenal, particularly Ncuti Gatwa and Jemma Redgrave, who do a fantastic job at selling the "holy crap, we're so screwed" nature of the cliffhanger (honestly, as someone who's never been the biggest fan of Kate as a character, this episode gave her some truly phenomenal moments) here. And lame CGI jackal aside, Sutekh establishes himself as a formidable presence right off the bat, complete with Gabriel Woolf returning to provide his sinister dulcet tones for the first time since the classic 1975 story, and returning to the show after voicing the Beast in "The Satan Pit" back in 2006. For all his faults, you can't deny - RTD sure as hell knows how to set up a cliffhanger. How this episode holds up will largely depend on how "Empire of Death" sticks the landing, but for now I can say I had an absolute blast with this episode. There may not be a lot going on, but there's a few great scenes, a couple of good character beats, and a fantastic cliffhanger that sets up the next episode in stunning fashion. I'm anxiously excited for the finale, with plenty of questions swirling around my head: - Who is Ruby's mother and how does she tie into the plot with Sutekh? - How the hell are they going to beat Sutekh? - Hell, how did Sutekh survive his fate at the end of his last appearance? - And how did Sutekh manage to tether himself to the TARDIS in the firstplace? - Are we still going to see Susan in the finale? - In what sense is Mrs Flood related to all of this? - Is SHE Susan? - Where is Cherry Sunday? - Is she safe? - Is she alright?

Actually, we've met more than two of the gods already. Besides the Toymaker and Maestro, we've also met the Trickster in the Sarah Jane Adventures spin off and the god Mara as well which is also from Classis Who. As a fan of Doctor Who since I can remember (at least 77 or so, where I was 5) seeing Sutekh come back AND being voiced by the original actor who played Sutekh back in Pyramids of Mars is awesome. Now, they've obviously retconned Sutekh into being this super mega god of gods, but he was easily the most powerful being the Doctor met in the entire franchise even back in the Tom Baker days etc. In the "extended" universe aka comics etc. Sutekh makes at least one appearance that I'm aware of - and some of the story beats have been used so far, including also stuff from a Trickster story that was never used (an abandoned baby left at a door step that turns out to be very important....sound familiar?). And Mrs. Flood has to be the Doctor's granddaughter Susan. She literally said she hides herself away, right after the Doctor explained regeneration to Ruby as saving themselves from death, or hiding away. I know they made her out to be sinister in that scene with storm coming, I just think that's a misdirection.

i think the backstory for sutekh will come in the beginning of the 2nd part. they will work in what people need to know. i think the most interesting thing is mrs. fludd. right after the doctor described regeneration as a means of hiding away she says she's always been hiding away. combined with the reaction to the tardis it seems she is a time lord who is not familiar with the doctor since hartnell. she didn't recognize what the tardis was at first but later did so she hasn't known of this one with the damaged chameleon circuits. at least not in person. she may know of his reputation. susan is out since she would have recognized the box right away. i'd even say classic who is out for the most part unless they introduce an earlier regeneration of a classic time lord.
