This is a classic adventure and the black and white works perfectly.

Such a classic episode. I love the imagery of the Tardis at night at the beginning and the doctors heartfelt welcome. I've watched this story several times. Recently watched Seeds of Death and enjoyed it.

Tomb is my favourite Cyberman story. It's up there with Earthshock and WEAT/ TDF. It's also my favourite Troughton. The Cybermen are really effective and iconic. The acting on the whole is really good and I adore the scene between Troughton and Watling. They both perform it perfectly. The story isn't dated either and is quite futuristic. The music, cliffhangers and the introduction of the cybermats are also highlights. It's lucky that they found it in 1991, otherwise we wouldn't have it today. Nice review :)

I love the scene with Victoria and the Doctor and glad you mentioned that. It's one of the keys to Troughton's Doctor - his compassion and empathy. I love the first Doctor but it's a little bit hard to imagine Hartnell playing that scene. (he could do it, but it would be so different...) Troughton can be a clown, he can be a goof, but he has a deep heart. And that addition to the Doctor's character is a good thing. Toberman is in some ways a racial stereotype, but there's as much "circus strongman" as anything else about him. And his actions are always noble - not comic. He's no "minstrel show" caricature. The 'internationalism' of the cast is fun, and, as you say, makes the story feel a bit more modern. I love the English-ness (or at least British-ness) of classic Who, but being in the USA it's always fun when an American character pops up. Peter Purves as the golly-gee-whiz guy in The Chase... The no nonsense astronauts and military man in The Tenth Planet... or the little cameo of Captain Hopper in the Tomb of the Cybermen. It doesn't matter when they get the accent right or not, it's just fun to "to see oursels as ithers see us." (The internationalism of modern Who is just a given: it's a small world now.) Also, the cybermen's tomb is on the planet Telos. Telos is Greek for end, both in the sense of the final chapter, where they end up, and in the sense of purpose, what they are for. Just a bit of provocative trivia...

The actor playing Toberman's next role was as a circus strongman in Terror of the Autons of course. :-)
