THE SILENCE Written by Gavin Cummings Directed Edited by Chris Phillips This is an interesting, poignant meditative little piece built around a 15th century Mexican/Spanish poet, played here by Monica Aguilar, was a real person, and one of the key figures in Spain’s literary golden age. Juana Ines was one of those gifted polymaths, reading at age three, and growing up to be a major figure in the literary world of the day. Unfortunately, her brilliance brought her up against the regressive male dominated society and Catholic religious conservatism of that age, she was forced to abandon literature and music and become a nun and many of her works were tragically destroyed. What survived assured her legacy. In a sense, this is Velocity’s ‘Historical’ episode, not unlike the Hartnell historicals, or Whitaker’s Rosa or Demons of the Punjab. But this gives us a much more intimate and personal story, one woman’s aspirations and oppression (as engineered by the Silence for their own mysterious purposes). It’s actually refreshing for exploring a topic or character that’s not widely known, but which is also poignantly universal. Of course, building an entire episode in 15th century Mexico might be a challenge. I suspect that there’s a shortage of appropriate locations for that kind of thing in Boise, Idaho. Instead the they just go all greenscreen and CGI, crafting a visually glorious and evocative dream dimension, full of luminosity and floating crystals, which is where Juana Ines poetry takes her when she sleeps, . The dream dimension is wonderful to look at and almost overpowers the story. It’s remarkable what you can do with sheer creativity. The dream dimension is also where she meets a more benign and obviously gay version of Father Nunez, played by Enzo Benzon here once again is a sly acknowledgment of the cost of sexual repression, this time around sexual orientation - in both realities. In both worlds, Nunez is gay, but in the real world, he’s repressed and constrained and both a victim and instrument of repression. In the dream dimension, he’s free to be his own self and he’s a genuinely happier and holier man. It’s a nice little throwaway bit that’s not given any emphasis at all, but is allowed to breath, and it works perfectly for that. The Silence, Magdalene Schernthanner (is that actually a real name?) and Chris Phillips, appearing in both the real world and dream dimension is (are?) well realized. The button down black suit and gray alien face, with a bit of Edvard Munch’s The Scream, thrown in make it very effective as agents of the Patriarchy. They’re not so much alien as ultimate expressions of an establishment so remote, arbitrary and inflexible, it seems alien. The Doctor confronts them, but doesn’t so much overcome as evades them. Not dramatic, but it works for a meditative episode. In the end, The Silence is hampered by too little time to develop the story fully, and the limitations of amateur actors in a no-budget production. But all of that is forgiven, it’s an episode with glorious visuals, an interesting idea and subject, and a story with a certain poignancy that, if I had any human feelings at all, would have left a lump in my throat at the end.

Thanks for your kind and thoughtful review. It's always touching when someone takes the time to consider the meaning of our show, despite it being a ramshackle production tied together with tape and string. many thanks!

thanks dude! That's super kind of you to say! We really tried to step up the Visual Fx this time. I love the shot of the Doctor sitting atop the materializing Tardis. The rest of the episode's incredible too, but for some reason that image specifically keeps sticking with me. It's just such a unique visual that conceptually shouldn't quite work, but really does

I'd never heard of this Juana nun person before. Thanks for the history lesson. Also, interesting production style, with virtual sets. I think there is a mismatch in "lenses" between the live action actors & the sets though. I could never figure out how that kind of stuff works. How did the Doctor get that fabulous photo of the Silence?
@chrisphillips14922 жыл бұрын
You're exactly right. The mismatch feeling isn't just the focal length it's also the floor height, depth of field, 6 dimensions of movement (angle and position) and the speed/acceleration! I almost cancelled the episode as it took me about 2 hours a shot to track. 😂😂😂 Please excuse the wobbly low budgetness of it. Xxx

Thanks for your thoughtful review. Yes, perhaps with obscure 17th century poetry, the silence plotting to overthrow the church, weird 7th dimension mirror universe and staying true to Juana Ines life and death story was a little much for us to jam in a ten page script. 😂
