I tell the story behind the sometimes beloved, but more often laughed-at third entry in the "Jaws" film franchise: "JAWS 3-D" (1983). I delve deep into its development, production and legacy, while providing my own thoughts about the film. Directed by Joe Alves. Starring: Dennis Quaid, Louis Gossett Jr. and Bess Armstrong.

Fun fact: As of 2019, the dolphin who played Sandy, actually a male named Capricorn, is still alive and resides at Sea World in Orlando.

I actually enjoyed Jaws the Revenge a lot. It’s the one movie that I can turn on and not have high expectations. I actually like it a lot more than Jaws 2. Judith Barsi was a little sweetheart. It’s not a good movie but it’s a fun little adventure you can turn on around Christmas and pour a glass of whiskey and enjoy.

I've seen The Revenge more times than any of the other three. The premise of the shark wanting revenge is hokey as hell but I always thought it was a decent enough movie, especially for an 80s sequel. And any movie that has Michael Caine AND Mario Van Peebles can't be that bad. 😂

My friend, you are the MASTER in making documentaries that are great companion pieces to classic films! Personally, if JAWS 2 and JAWS 3 get another blu ray release, your documentaries on both films would be outstanding additions. Especially for JAWS 3, which is always bare bones. I think JAWS 2 has a featurette about the making of, but I found your documentary more informative if I am comparing to two. Another spectacular job on the JAWS franchise! Cheers!

I viewed this in the theater as a very young child when released. The nostalgia is there. I had a blast. Summer. Cold theater. Junk food. 3D Bruce eating people. I will say its my 3rd fav with Revenge taking the top spot as the pure bomb stinker. For the record.. i would go and see 100 Jaws movies using practical effects/mechanical sharks. You build it, i will come.

@@americandespot6520 Somewhere in southern Georgia. I was living in Tallahassee, FL at the time. And the nearest in-door movie theater was in Georgia. There was a promotional thing with Jaws3. I barely remember it, but I remember my parents telling me to wear my swimming trunks and bring my raft and floaties. We drove like an hour to the theater, waited in line in the heat. Then entered the theater with water. The bottom of the theater nearest to the screen was submerged. It wasn't deep. On an adult it was waste high. But for me it was deep enough! Others sat at the top outside of the water. I watched it with my 3D paper glasses, and I remember being freaked out.. Some people left, either they thought the movie sucked. Or weren't comfortable being in water while watching Jaws3. I wish more theaters did this kind of stuff nowadays!! I also remember E.T. having an alien theme for a drive-in movie theater nearby in Florida! You had to come dressed as an alien (to get your kids in free), and they did a light show and fireworks before the movie started. Good times, good times..

@@graphicsgod that's cool! I always wanted to see this in 3D having been like 4 years old and not understanding what 3D was I chickened out after the grouper's head came off! :( I did have the opportunity to visit SeaWorld in 1983 when they were heavily promoting it. They had a theater I believe in the shark encounter exhibit which showed clips from the film to which upon ending the screen lifted up revealing the exit which was not the way the audience entered and the exit was a glass tunnel with a moving sidewalk/conveyor belt type thing quickly ushered us out. The iconic Jaws theme could be heard throughout but it was all a bit underwhelming as the tunnel was short. & clearly was not the same design as the one's seen in the film. (Obviously cause the whole Undersea Kingdom didn't exist and was shot all in miniature). & mostly the sharks themselves were all noticeably small. I have been back to Sea World & have seen the sharks in the encounter 21 years later & they were much larger. I'm not 100℅ but I Believe you can still see the short tunnel from their Shark Restaurant from the large tanks that are throughout the restaurant. I have rarely been able to find anything relating to the Jaws 3D Sea World exhibit online I think because shortly after its release they were embarrassed to have ever been associated with the film. But I do still have some pics of the Shark Models they had on display @ the time!

I watched this with my parents in the cinema when it was first released! We were in a queue....then realised everyone else was watching a re-release of Disney's 'The Jungle Book'. The three of us sat alone at the back of the theatre. My Dad had to bend the arms of the cardboard glasses so they would fit on my head (I still have them) and my Mum kept sticking her hand over my face at the scary moments (I was only 8). Still can't believe the Jaws films only got a PG rating! I really enjoyed it and when we finally invested in a VHS recorder it was one of several films we recorded off the TV which I watched as a kid. However, for years I had no idea it was cut on TV and only saw the uncut version (minus my Mum's hands in my face) years later. Despite all it's flaws I still find this a fun watch. Totally agree that a remake would be great fun!

Jaws 3 is not the worst film in the franchise, that distinction belongs to Jaws the Revenge (part 4). Where they messed up was the whole 3-D aspect, which was big at the time. I believe there were several more movies that came out the same year that used the 3-D gimmick. Also, the studio insisted having one of the Brodys in the film. I actually kinda like the idea of the movie taking place inside a theme park. I would have liked for the body count be higher but I believe Sea World was against the idea. Additionally, part 3 has the best orchestral soundtrack. All in all this is still one of my favorite shark movies. It was the first Jaws movie that I saw in theaters and I've been fascinated and terrified of sharks since then.

I've seen this movie dozens of times, having been a child in the early 80's when it was played on repeat on HBO nonstop. The problem isn't the script.. it's the effects. If it had been done with today's tech (Deep Blue Sea actually repeated the glass smashing scene with success), or they had stepped back and rethought their storyboards realizing they simply couldn't pull off what they wanted to do... it would have been a perfectly fine movie. Also I don't think current audiences can grasp what a shock it was to have SeaWorld be the setting.. at the time SeaWorld was right up there with Disney as a class A attraction.

Jaws 3D is my favourite sequel as well, although technically speaking Jaws 2 is *miles* better than it. There is some nostalgia of sorts attached to it, because as a kid I believed there were only two Jaws films, so to find that this and The Revenge existed was exciting and surprising, obviously the actual films were disappointing, but over time I have come to love this film. It’s terrible and that’s why I love it. The premise is genuinely great though, so it’s a shame it didn’t turn out the way Matheson wrote it.

I really like your work. Jaws 3 is a very silly movie, but I somehow have a soft spot for it and have been trying to figure out why ever since I saw it in the theater [the derisive laughter when the shark blasted through the control room is something I'll never forget]. It comes down to two things: the music in that film is very, very good, which is still surprising to me to this day, and even though the scene where FitzRoyce is chomped is completely ridiculous, it's actually really well done . . . the stuff of nightmares. I wish they'd had the shark do more chomping and wreaking havoc once it was unleashed inside the park with the public there. But Jaws 3 is still to this day, strangely, one of my guilty pleasures.

@@gabrieltrejo2533You are correct about Kelly’s demise. In one of the early versions of the script, Sean & Kelly were riding in a gondola that would occasionally dip into the water. The shark breaches & grabs their gondola car. Kelly would be killed, with Sean left in intensive care.

I thought this movie would kill for a remake I always thought its strange that studios want to remake great movies when there goal should be remake bad movies that had potential first re do the script keep the characters but give them more story second get a first rate Director who understands this kind of movie third get a top rated special effects guy and for love of God dont shoot in 3D forth find some way to expand it to 120 minutes 99 minutes is just to short and finally do whatever it takes to keep Alan Parker Score if you have to bring another composer to fill up the extra 21 minutes that's fine as long as the composer can make his sound like Parker wrote it so the movie wouldn't feel completely different if they did that we could finally have that Jaws Trilogy that we deserve

Great documentary. I quite enjoyed it and you earned a sub. ------ I unironically love Jaws 3. It's a great gateway horror movie for younger audiences and it's a fine B-Movie in its own right. I find the Sea World setting and the made up Undersea Kingdom to be creative and memorable. The score is beautiful and severely underrated. I like that unlike the other 3 Jaws movies this shark is exclusively seen underwater save a few second when it attacks Lea Thompson. Louise Gosset Jr is not a villain in this piece, and actually survives. It would have been quite easy to turn him into a mustache twirling villain. The bad opticals don't bother me. The scenes of the shark violence are actually quite horrifying in my opinion. When Fitz Royce gets inhaled whole by the shark and it begins to try and position him so that it can crunch him up is claustrophobic and the things nightmares are made of. ------------ Jaws 3 is a lot of fun and I love it.

I recorded a CBS presentation of this in the late 80s and practically wore the tape out rewatching it. Some of the poor effects were blocked out thanks to the “formatted to fit your screen process”, so for the longest time I didn’t realize both dolphins jumped out of the water at the end; also some of the more gruesome bits like floating 3D parts, including the shark’s severed jaws, were not there. Growing up not knowing what made a good movie, I enjoyed it along with Jaws the Revenge (yes I did), but now I know what it is, not even nostalgia can truly save it for me.

Appropriately, this is my third favorite shark movie, after the original Jaws and Deep Blue Sea. Jaws is set at the beach and on a boat in the open ocean, Deep Blue Sea is on a supremely freaky sinking sea station, and this one is at a theme park. The variety of settings gives each film a different atmosphere and sense of urgency.

Jaws 3 has always been a guilty pleasure for me. As an 11 year old kid in the late 80's I didn't care that Jaws 3 & 4 were bad movies. I just had fun with them. I finally got to see this in 3D on the 2016 Blu ray and I think it makes it a better movie (although not quite a good movie). Enjoyed the video!

I have a soft spot for this movie as it was the first Jaws film I saw as a kid (the TV version) and shortly after seeing it we took our first trip to Sea World, so it was like I was visiting the movie. I believe I bought a toy shark there that battled King Kong and Godzilla (the other two monsters I loved as a kid) for many years to come. Plus I had a thing for Lea Thompson even as a little kid.

I enjoyed this one. As a kid I was terrified. Growing up I get it. I never knew that about Dennis Quaid's drug use. Now I'm gonna have to watch the movie again.

The recent release of Jaws 3 in 4K corrects alot of the 2-D issues mentioned here such as the blur and bluish halo effect with AI upscaling. I've never seen it look better. Although it does little to correct those special effects and ultimately is still Jaws 3-D!

Layton, I just want to say that you have made another informative and enjoyable documentary about the "Jaws" series. I of course, find this to be more entertaining than the movie, "Jaws 3-D" itself. While it's not the worst of the "Jaws" series, it is still less than the sum of its parts.

This is a fun vid, but I'm willing to bet that the Giant Squid prop from 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was bigger than the 35 foot shark with sled.

This is one of my fave guilty pleasures. LOL at the "Damaging of the parks reputation bit" though. I think depicting promiscuous employees is a positive compared to how the real world park treated their animals.

I've never understood how some people rate this as a worse film than the 4th one. I remember watching both as a kid and Jaws 3 someone lured child me into a weird zen enjoyment of it that on seeing the movie 10 years later I was stunned at how awful it was. Jaws: The Revenge on the other hand. At no point did I think this movie was good. Because it wasn't. It was just BAD.

That Alan Landsburg national geographic documentary on sharks would have been dope back in 1983. Too bad permission was denied. We could have had shark weeks starting much earlier. Too bad they lost a lawsuit by using some of the footage anyway.

interesting that pics from JAWS 4 were used in this retrospective. Also, David Brown said the quote about "fouling the nest" , not Richard Zanuck. Watching JAWS documentary for the source.

The best thing you can say about Jaws 3-D/III is that it is significantly better than Jaws: The Revenge. Just like having hemorrhoids is significantly better than having colon cancer.

Watching it in 3D is at least somewhat entertaining and amusing. Watching it in 2D only serves to magnify all of its problems.

Great review. It would be cool if someone made a special edition of this film and used CGI to re-do all the scenes that have really crap sfx in them (especially the shark breaking the glass at the end). Jaws 3 was a good film I thought, a fun monster film that is always enjoyable to watch.

With the subpar FX and over 30min of cut footage, this could be something worth revisiting with a special edition recut using cleaned up 3D FX.

Jaws 3 is the best Jaws movie ever. It was the best ever when I first saw it in 3-D in the theatres, and it's the best now. Best 3d movie ever too. And the Kingdom Under the Sea? Those underwater tunnels? I want to live there. That's where I want to spend my life. With Lea Thompson. and sometimes the blonde.

I was born and raised in Florida. I don't live there anymore but I still own a house down there that I rent out to people. And I've been to sea world a bunch of times growing up. I haven't been again since I was probably 14 or 15 and I'm 34 now. But the funniest part about it is the fact that this takes place at SeaWorld is in the center of the state and no part of SeaWorld comes anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean hahaha. SeaWorld is landlocked right in the center of the state so there would be no way for the shark to even come within about an hour and a half car ride to SeaWorld lol
