Making Your Embouchure Be Flexible While You're Playing - FluteTips 87

Our embouchure needs to be in a state of flexibility all the time while we're playing. It needs to be able to change and move the whole time that we're playing.
If you're playing high, you need to have a high embouchure. If you're immediately going low, your embouchure needs to be able to move and be a low embouchure.
In pieces where you move from playing a lot of high notes to all of a sudden dropping down to playing low notes, if you keep a high embouchure, you're going to lose the low notes.

You are so right with tongue shape & you're the only one talking about it. Jazz phrasing sounds square until you try to 'scat' like Ella Fitzgerald. Tongue = no1 in our tool kit. It's not just "aah eee", it's everything in between. An instrument is a noise making machine. I played a $12,000 Flt & it was a Rolls Royce compared with mine, but (motoring analogy) I wasn't a better driver, it just felt a little more comfortable. Thank you for your videos.

@@DoctorFlute in my comment I was way off subject. Thanks for that info on flexibility. I was raving on about people who think an expensive instrument is the answer to everything. There's no getting around the hrs of practice required & the knowledge from teachers like you. If I had $12,000 I'd spend 1/2 on a good instrument & the rest on lessons, books, CDs, & Concert tickets. But we have responsibilities & priorities in life. Maybe I'm just jealous. The lesson = we have to make best of what we've got & we never stop learning. Thanks for the work you put into your videos. You help a lot of people.

Absolutely one of the best if not THE best advice/instruction on Embouchure Flexibility, thank you so very much Angela, I'm Second Flute in the Choir Instrumental Consort of my Church, and for this Sunday Service and the Service on the 25th, there are a couple of Hymns and Pieces that have a few arpeggios and change of registers needing this kind of flexibility you just so excellently explained. Thanks - I've been shying away from Etudes because I'm self-learning and they look overwhelming, but that one doesn't seem so scary so maybe I'll challenge myself to some Kohler. For embouchure flexibility, I've been doing harmonics and interval/octave leaps.
