After about 15 years of playing, without quite getting where I want to be I'm 'overhauling' my technique. Your videos have been a great way of balancing out all the 'my way or the highway' videos on KZbin, and are an amazing resource. Thank you!

I have never really been stuck watching a channel like I am yours. I commented on another video of yours that I’m not one to gush praises at another creator and watch all the KZbin guitar channels you do, but you address things no one else does. I taught myself everything, my music teacher doesn’t shred guitar he just taught me theory. It’s my technique that I’m having to overhaul. I shred without a pick and I’ve never seen anyone else do it. But I’m learning how to play with a pick and this has helped more than cracking the code- for my needs! I hope your channel goes viral because it deserves to

And also I’d be interested in a few Skype lessons. I live off a disabled veteran’s pension but it’s worth whatever I can afford

Thank you! Shredding without a pick sounds pretty interesting. Skype lessons are full up at the moment, but I do have some spots for video correspondence. Lots of stuff over at the Patreon group too. And, if you can't find what you're looking for there, just tell me!

Hey John - newish (21 months playing guitar) player here, do you have any idea what causes the pick to move around the thumb when playing? I used to struggle with the pick moving around when I was playing, I got a handle on it, but it still happens when the tempo becomes really quick. When it comes to tremolo picking or picking fast in general the thumb exposes more of the pick as it moves around which eventually causes it to practically fly from my hands. P.S. Huge Maiden fan here as well lol. Half of the stuff I learn is Maiden because I just love that style of playing... and then I like black metal at the other end of the spectrum. Fun to bounce around between. Been watching for a bit now, love your teaching style.

Glad you like my teaching style. Thank you! My guess is that your grip just needs some improving to keep the pick from moving around. There are some picks that have grip on them. The ones I use from Bog Street have a concave hole in the middle which makes it a lot easier to always have the pick where you want it. I currently use their 4mm thick Battle Axe version, found in the Bog Street Labs section. They also make 1mm, 2mm, and 3mm versions in their regular store. Highly recommended!

@@Milehighshred Thanks for responding! Yeah grip has always been a problem for me. My hands exude some acidic sweat very quickly and it makes it hard to grip anything, including in my left hand where the string sometimes slips below my finger. The only picks that I can grab decently are the Dunlop Nylon / MAX GRIP Jazz 3 XLs. I tried the regular Jazz 3s but they are too small for me when I start strumming instead of picking. I'll take a look at the bog street ones. I had a similar design with a hole in the middle but the material used still made it slippery in my hands.

@@atheist4life229 Did you happen to use a Gravity pick before? I know those come with "grip" holes, but yes, the material is quite slippery. The Bog Street picks never feel slippery to me.
@atheist4life229
@atheist4life229 Жыл бұрын
@@Milehighshred Yeah I've tried using them. I've tried a *lot* of picks despite being new - tortexes (don't like), gator grip (don't like), nylon (good), gravity (too slippery), some sort of star pick (feels weird), john petrucci signature (like them but prone to slipping). Don't know why or how my fingers get so sweaty when playing but I remember when trying to play The Trooper (especially the gallops) was almost impossible because of the pick trying to fly out. Now I can play it without much issue. Still, it seems like once the tempo threshold crosses a certain number, usually with 16th notes, the grip starts to break.

Nice video. Bernth is a great player and seems like a really nice guy but if you're looking to become and advanced player I don't think his lessons/ teaching will get you there. I got into his channel a few years ago when I started learning to shred, and his exercises were great for that as a beginner.
@Milehighshred
@Milehighshred Жыл бұрын
Thank you! You know, for all the beginners I've taught, pretty much all of them in their beginning phase couldn't play the stuff I've seen Bernth show. If you were playing that stuff when just starting out, that's pretty impressive!

I can't pick like that it obviously works for Bernth but picking isn't a one size fits all obviously right and ways but there isn't one right way.

His clickbait titles and thumbnails bug me. He seems to be getting more and more sales oriented in his videos lately. Basically, if you don't buy his course, you'll suck forever.

Berth is good for supposedly being self taught, but it's not possible to teach yourself just because you may not have a teacher doesn't make anyone self taught you learn from some where rather it's you tube books or wherever you can't teach yourself what you don't know so you're learning from somewhere
