I’m glad you talked about caffeine and it’s effects on nervousness. I owned a coffee shop for years in a college town with a very popular medical school. This made me very careful about how much caffeine my regulars consumed. I had a lovely gal come in every day for a 6 shot latte! 6 shots a day was our cut off for everyone, so I would only sell her one of these drinks a day. After some time I asked her to please be honest with me, did she go to any other coffee shops in the town to get her drink? She admitted she went to two or three other shops to buy it every day! Call it barista intuition, but I asked her if she suffered from schizophrenia. She looked totally shocked and began crying telling me how the voices were tormenting her and she was having several panic attacks a day! I asked her to please consider going decaf for a while. Well, I didn’t see this gal for two weeks! When she returned, she looked better than I had ever seen her! The color of her checks was better, her eyes looked better, she wasn’t jittery. She hugged me and began crying. She had quit caffeine cold turkey after our conversation, and wanted me to know the voices were gone! She explained how she suffered for years with the condition and was on all kinds of meds for it but nothing helped. After stopping all caffeine she also tossed out her meds and waited two weeks to see what happened. Her sleep cycle returned, her appetite came back, the scary voices were gone, and she felt human again! I couldn’t believe that in a medical town no doctor spoke with her about her caffeine addiction! It took a barista to straighten her out! So, all you baristas out there, remember, you are selling a drug. It’s a mild and very socially acceptable drug but a drug nonetheless. It’s our responsibility to educate our customers if they are using coffee in a dangerous way. I have wondered how many psychosis patients are actually self inflicted by abusing caffeine? I’ll leave that question for the doctors reading this.

Coffee seems to be more beneficial than not, but for some people like myself, it’s absolutely addictive, whether it’s the caffeine itself or something else. I’m personally not chasing the caffeine (I don’t think) so much as that warm, cozy feeling of a hot drink and bitter flavor I actually love. I had to wean myself off of 6-7 cups/day before I went to army bct (did NOT want to go cold turkey from that dosage while under high amounts of stress), but I’ve gone straight back to having a 2-3 cups/day now that I’m in my specialty’s schooling environment. It’s one the little things that keeps me motivated throughout the day.
@BCsenge973 жыл бұрын
Coffee can be addictive but usually, the thing that makes it addictive is not only the coffein but the behavior and environmental cues. It's like when smokers miss the feeling of having the cigarette in their hand, blowing smoke out, etc. The brain can get hooked on behaviors as well, because the moment you do that "rewarding" behavior, like drinking a hot mug of coffee, it activates your brain similar as other drugs do.

I have to deal with my stomach creating too much acid, too. I can’t drink a regular cup of coffee without paying for it with pain. But I can drink lattes without any issues. I don’t know if it’s the milk or the espresso or both combined, but something with it does not effect my stomach like regular coffee does. I drank/drink my coffee/lattes with just creamer/skim milk,- no flavorings or sugar, not sure if that would impact things. Thanks to this virus, coffee is the last vice I have left, I refuse to give it up. I don’t like how milk ‘waters down’ the flavor of the espresso, but increasing the shots helps that and I’ve mostly adjusted to it now. Straight espresso is too strong unfortunately. Anyway, if you need a possible alternative sometime, maybe this will help.
@fbbWaddell3 жыл бұрын
First, you are not highly acidic. That would put you in a coma. Second, the whole acidic/basic concepts are actually about your digestive system. You probably already know that, but for the other people reading... If you have acid reflux, increasing your raw green leafy vegetable intake can reduce the severity of it. Not a cure, but it helps. I also recommend not eating spicy food and deep friend junk but up to you. :)

Ive got anxiety and if im feeling anhedonia or brain fog and I drink coffee it just makes it worse. I can only drink tiny amounts of caffeine without feeling overstimulated (like a stupid small amount, like a small cup of green tea can sometimes be too much lol) and even if I drink it at 8AM it still effects my ability to sleep at 10PM, I think I might be a slow metaboliser of it which might explain that. But yeah, the only time its useful is if im already feeling alert, it will help me to stay alert, but if im already feeling anxious or tired or foggy then it just makes me more anxious which makes everything else worse lol. Caffein is a known stimulant. Might be affecting his dopamine levels so when it wears off he feels worse than before. It could be a up and down steep incline of emotions and dopamine. Some people do better staying away from it so they have a more even dopamine level in their body. No nasty drop in chemicals. I have adhd and mood disorder and it actually works well for me. So i need that extra dopamine since my body doesn’t make it. Like Dr. Mike says. Everyone is different.

Never straight coffee. People make jokes about me having an addiction or needing my coffee to start the day but that’s not actually the case, I just love the taste of my preferred coffee drinks and it’s more of a psychological comfort drink that helps me start my day in a good mood. It doesn’t wake me up. It doesn’t cause any withdrawal symptoms if I go without it. It does make me poop right away, but that’s really about it, as far as effects I can actually feel and notice. Beyond that, I remember as child always being able to get to sleep just fine even if I’ve had soda close to bedtime, or even directly before bed. I’d love to know more about what’s going on within people who are immune to caffeine.

For caffeine we found that through our own experiments as well as many studies saying that those who are under the effect of caffeine and who don't usually get much caffeine daily heighten their reaction times. On the other side, those who get a lot of caffeine daily and then don't get their "dose" all day their reaction time is lower than the average.

Coffee is now part of my daily routine for managing depression. My symptoms are constant fatigue (24/7), hypersomnia, inability to focus or concentrate, low mood and lack of motivation. Coffee helps me a LOT. I didn't discover coffee until a year ago and it helps make my life more manageable. I tried caffeine pills but coffee feels and hits differently. I use the packaged instant coffee now so I can easily monitor how much caffeine Im having per day I have chronic, treatment resistant depression for almost 15 years now and have tools to help myself but lack the motivation to do them. One day, I made the connection and realized that when I DO drink coffee or tea, I am more likely to do the goals I set out for myself. I can actually go for a walk like I said I would. I can take a shower and practice my affirmations. I'm not saying its impossible for me to do these things without caffeine but its much much much more likely that I will practice self care. And I already am on several psychiatric medications for depression and that help somewhat, but not enough. So even coffee tastes awful to me, its the drink that makes it possible for me to almost live a normal life.

@Mihai Balint I think you are right for doses most people consume, since even most Starbucks drinks have 2+ shots of espresso in one "coffee". The strangest thing I have noticed is when I have a cup or two when I get home in the late afternoon it makes me very tired. I will fall asleep in minutes and it doesn't stop me from falling asleep at night. As far as helping with focus, I read a study where they monitored college students who drank coffee and those that didn't. The kids drinking coffee had better test scores and seemed to retain info than those that didn't drink coffee. I read this at BU not sure if it was their study or not and it was ages ago. As a long time coffee drinker I have to say I do have a very easy time retaining info and definitely have a better thought process than every one I know.
