I’m a drummer and my favorite instrument is the mellotron. King Crimsons “in the wake of Poseidon” is the song that always comes to mind when I think of the mellotron. I actually met a guy down here in Texas who had a functioning mello and he showed me the wild ass tape loop set up and played it for me, it was genuinely magical. I can’t think of a more organic, warm, earthy, almost angelic choir sounding instrument than the Mellotron.

@@recemarkou3223 where did I say that David Bowie is simply better than the Beatles? they are both iconic and probably the best artists to walk this earth! but you were eluding to the fact that the only famous mellotron song is strawberry fields forever (which of course is incredible) but I disagree with this! imo the use of the mellotron on space oddity is even more iconic than strawberry fields forever. Bowie was inspired to use it because of The Beatles which is awesome, I think that's why I like the way he uses it, because he pushes it into a more modern sound especially with the experimental song structure and lift off sounds etc in the song

I love the sound of mellotrons. They still sound really cool in a retro steampunk way. When it comes to mellotron pieces, Watcher of the Skies and In the Court of the Crimson King have got to be the best use of a mellotron ever. Tony Banks in particular could come up with great mellotron parts. Very cool.

The Mellotron on "Space Oddity" was played by Rick Wakeman. He fairly recently ceremoniously took his 'Tron out into a field and set it alight. The are both the most hideously monstrous and unreliable Heath Robinson contraption ever invented on the face of the earth, but equally one of the most sublime, beautiful and distinctive instruments ever built.

I bought one of these in 1972. Probably one of the first in the US. When mine reached the end of the tape or tapes it just stopped and didn't make the horrible sounds this one makes. The only problem was you could be playing on stage and the motor speed could change and it would go out of tune. Good thing my pitch perception was good back then because I would turn the pitch knob and bring it back in tune while we played. I remember my band played In the Court of the Crimson King and In the Wake of Poseidon. I wish I could go back to those days.

I've read many reports that touring with a Mellotron was a nightmare. Every one sounded a little different, and if you could afford it, you would tour with one or more backups and used whichever sounded best on that particular day. Adding to this, many of the more progressive bands would hack the living daylights out of their machines to make them do things like play the samples backwards, or use custom tape-loops.
