I’m a drummer and my favorite instrument is the mellotron. King Crimsons “in the wake of Poseidon” is the song that always comes to mind when I think of the mellotron. I actually met a guy down here in Texas who had a functioning mello and he showed me the wild ass tape loop set up and played it for me, it was genuinely magical. I can’t think of a more organic, warm, earthy, almost angelic choir sounding instrument than the Mellotron.

The only problem was you could be playing on stage and the motor speed could change and it would go out of tune. Good thing my pitch perception was good back then because I would turn the pitch knob and bring it back in tune while we played. I remember my band played In the Court of the Crimson King and In the Wake of Poseidon. I wish I could go back to those days.

I've read many reports that touring with a Mellotron was a nightmare. Every one sounded a little different, and if you could afford it, you would tour with one or more backups and used whichever sounded best on that particular day. Adding to this, many of the more progressive bands would hack the living daylights out of their machines to make them do things like play the samples backwards, or use custom tape-loops.

I just found out about the Mellotron a couple months ago and I've been absolutely obsessed ever since. What a cool and beautiful instrument!!!

Introducing and explaining the Mellotron to a younger generation, and having the time of his life... I love it. Thanks for sharing.

If you like Mellotron, I highly reccomend "Si on avait besoin d'une cinquième saison" by Quebec band Harmonium. It's a beautiful mix of folk and prog, with the Mellotron being the showstopper in the final track "Histoires sans paroles"

Thanks, I'd never heard of Harmonium (that I remember)! I just ordered the CD! 😎👍

This isn’t that famous of a song but Go Let it Out by Oasis has an awesome mellotron that makes the song sound even more psychedelic than it already is.

If Trent was playing the mellotron, that means it was literally the exact same one used for SGT Pepper’s. He bought it from Yoko.
@noelsamuels67274 жыл бұрын
Not true. The one used on Sgt Pepper was a rental unit - long gone in the trash now. Trent had access to another one used by Lennon which was housed at the Record Plant where he was recording, and briefly used it. Trent never owned it.

I saw someone point this instrument out about changes by ozzy and now I know all these iconic songs with it that I never would've known it wasn't a keyboard . Such a cool instrument

Opeth - Damnation introduced me to Mellotron , Steven Wilson plays it so well and knows how to let it sing.

I came here for opeth. I can’t say I expected to hear any of them, but now I know exactly what made those sounds. Major feature on “Hours of Wealth”!

Heads up: there are digital Mellotron models that are available. The M4000 series, I believe; rackmount and keyboard versions. They're pricey, but it's more accessible than trying to grab an original. Either way you go, these sounds are great. Very dreamy and ethereal.
