Welcome back!
In this video, we turbocharge a 2004 Sportster 1200R using the DoctorMotorcycle Draw-thru turbo setup, which fits on 1986-2006 Evolution Sportsters. On this sportster, we also installed a set of Fueling Bolt-in cams, and we do a back-to-back comparison of 40-80mph acceleration - the addition of the cams made a huge difference, and completely transformed this bike. This is because the stock "W" cam in these sportster are very low performance, with early intake close timing and very short duration. Great for making piles of torque at 3,500, not great for top end power.
Turbochargers are power multipliers....they are not miracle workers. Low-boost setups on stock engines are typically very underwhelming, unless installed on an already high-performance engine....which a sportster is not. It is a well known fact that you can make similar power to low-boost turbo setups with a well cammed and tuned N/A setup. That said, if you were to take that well tuned N/A setup, and add a turbo on top of that - you'd have a real monster. We universally see a 40% power gain to the wheels on 8psi and about 50% power gain on 9-10psi. This math applies to bone stock engines as well as ported and cammed engines. A stock 65rwhp engine x 1.5 = 97.5rwhp. A highly modified cammed and ported engine making 110rwhp x 1.5 = 165rwhp.

I had this exact bike, same color, it was my first Harley. I put 26,000 miles on it the 1st year of ownership. Hooked ever since. Haha I actually miss it.

Correction - As some people have pointed out in the comments already, the Sportster 1200R did not come from the factory with .551 cams; I read a review on the bike from a motorcycle magazine from '04 that referenced "high lift, hotter cams" as a "key feature of the 1200R", when in reality, all they were referring to was the change to W cams starting in 2004 on 1200 model sportsters. So that's my bad. The only sportsters to ever have the .551 cams were the XR1200's (which was what I originally thought before reading that article. Also - I try my best to keep mistakes in the video, for example, accidentally kicking the camera, dropping tools, struggling with things. Additionally, some people have mentioned that I make it "look easy" or call me a wizard; the reality is that there's still plenty of frustrating moments on every build....they're just less common and easier to overcome the more experienced you get. A lot of work gets done off camera, please don't think that I spent 5 minutes on the jetting, it was a long process to get it running crisp and clean. Enjoy the video! Yes. Also, i thought that 883 and 1200 got W grind cams in 2004. Yes XR1200 is so special machine, it has rally different oil pump above cams in the axes of cams , under the cover. Different breathing system in top covers, really good rear fork etc. Great build!!

Much appreciated - I always try to tell people that there's a lot done off camera and behind the scenes. Also, If I drop a wrench or make a mistake, it will usually stay in the video. There's challenging bits and frustrating moment during a build no matter how experienced you are 👍

100%, the cams really woke the bike up. With the stock cam it hit hard at 3,000 but the top end power felt constrained. With the cams it will power wheelie!

That's the exact reason I don't ride those things anymore, you can't rip off a few gears and keep the speeds reasonable. And your tall gearing is why a 10 second Harley will have you playing catch up until the 330' mark

Yeah you are not wrong - banging through the gears is a lot of fun, it's nice to be able to grab some gears and not be doing 150 plus. I dropped a tooth on my front sprocket but 4th gear redline still delivers 150. @@DoctorMotorcycle

Turbo that thang! It makes riding extremely fun! It gets a ton of attention, even without the turbo because it looks “retro”. People ask me what year it is all the time.

The R model never came with the 551 cam. Stock cam was the W grind cam for the 1200 of that year. Stock cam on the 883 was the D grind. The Roadster main changes vs the custom were the dual disc front brake, 19 in front wheel vs the 21, and the Tachometer. Having said that, awesome build. I am looking to reacquire a sportster I had in the past for a build and may be getting some of your equipment for it.

Just double checked the part numbers and you're right; the reason I thought it had the .551 cams was an article I read on motorcyclist, that listed "higher performance, high lift Camshafts" as a key feature of the 1200R. They were likely referring to the change to W cams in 2004, I just misinterpreted it.

Us Buell Guys had always wondered why Harley Davidson to this day does not run an air diverting scoop to that rear head, yes even without a fan you can't go wrong with some cool air from the left side aimed at that spark plug and rear cylinders head.

Built a sportster mother in 2000. It’s got some ass. Without a turbo. Haha. Hasn’t been up and running in years. Have 2 others I need to do something with. This bike is way cool.

I added the longer rear shocks and variable rate fork springs on my 05 1200 roadster, and yes it performed much better!

I absolutely love my dragy! What kind of 0-60 and 1/4 mile times/speed do you run? I've been able to get as low as 3.4 seconds for 0-60 but the bike isn't stock haha

It would be interesting to have a project on the Yamaha MT 01, it has 90 or 100 hp 16 torque, I don't remember the exact values, but it would be a monstrous project to leave it with a turbo

I wonder if there are any potential fuel economy improvements from the turbo kit. Have you tried to compare a change in miles per tank riding conservatively?

An awesome project man, well done. Tell us, what is your thought process when choosing the next project? Do you just go willy nilly and slap snails on anything with 2 wheels? Or is there some prerequisite or other method to your madness? Like choosing bikes with very low natural compression ratios to stay safer with knock? Tell us sensei! Cheers!

Thanks, it's mostly whatever the customer owns and wants turbocharged. The past 3 builds have all been commissioned, so I don't have a say in what bike it is. But we're going to be focusing on Sportster based engines from here on out - Buell XB, Sportster, Tube frame Buells as well as Ironhead Sportsters, and eventually Harley Softails. I'd like to build a Turbo Vrod, Harley Softail etc. But it seems like people need to see a build on their exact bike before they take the plunge. We can do Japanese bikes too but I have to follow the money, and with Harley riders, $4-6k isn't a big deal

I would agree with the money part. Trask is selling their kits for more money and NOT installed. This is a bargain for not needing to buy a 20k worth of getting another bike.

2 questions:1. how far from the flange would you mount an O2 on an NA 99 1200? 2. I like split duration, how would the N8 cams work in said 1200C? Well, it's a 1200C donated to a Paughco rigid. Do the N8 cams need adjustable push rods? Pretty sure the oil pinion is going to have to be changed, no worries.

Do you think a turbo kit would affect highway cruising or is that just dependent on revs?

During 70mph cruise it doesn't make any boost, but as soon as you accelerate even a little bit, it will make boost. It's dependent on throttle position - 3/8 throttle will make 5-6psi, and anything above that will be at or near full boost. Highway fuel economy is very close to stock so long as you're cruising without getting into boost a ton.

just curious why it has wire wheels and only one front disc. my 04 xl1200r, same color and everything, had cast magnesium wheels and dual front discs. but man do i miss mine. lady pulled out infront of me and totalled mine. took my right foot too.

I got the bike that way fully knowing it wasn’t the right front end or wheels. It was super clean, has 11k miles on it. It is what makes me mad that someone pulled the front end. I hear dyna guys want dual disks they pull em off these bikes. The wheels on there now are from TC Bros, but I honestly hate spoke wheels. They leak, it’s just how they are. Finding a factory 04 dual disks front end is extremely hard to find, because not only you have to change the forks, you’ll need new lines with a bigger master. I have new bars that I plan on installing soon.

@@TineEdong i know the struggle all too well. I’ve rebuilt my front end 3 times and replaced 2 wheels. 2 original roadster wheels. Was a bitch and a half finding all those parts. If i have anything serious i will let you know. My sporty is beyond repair this time😕

i wanna ask, can you turbocharge a single cylinder? since the power is pulsating a lot would it affect the output perofrmance?

Yes, but you need a BIG plenum and an intelligently designed turbo setup with a relatively large turbine housing.

Would that turbo be to small for a 96ci Evo I think it's around 1580cc would like to make 200hp with a fast spool time

Yes, too small for that displacement. Look into the Borg Warner S1BG or Garrett GBC line

@DoctorMotorcycle what about the gt2871r I ran one on a Hayabusa it made full boost at 4k rpms on it and pulled to 11k hopefully it would spool faster on the Harley having almost 300 more cc

Yeah, someone stole a bunch of stuff off this bike, I think it may have been wrecked at some point. The forks were missing and it should've had the high performance .551 cams, it ended up having the low performance W cams. Bummer, cause those the two main things different on the 1200R

It’s the one thing I hate about the bike honestly. I knew it should have had them and it was such a heart breaker when I saw the W cams. W doesn’t mean winning either damnit! lol I’m glad the Doctor told me to get cams that will be better for turbo applications. Replacing that front end with factory forks is like 3 grand…. 😭 and I hate spoke wheels too but again, finding factory ones are really hard to get.

@@Ghettochappy I would 100 do it over again turbo Vs a big bore kit. It rides like normal until you twist the wrist!!! The heads flow the greatest out of the sportsters that I know of. I do know the cams are bigger with the 1200R but I am glad that I got cams that were made for boost.

The compression needs to be lowered to run boost. That motor will detonate too easy if you aren't careful.

I did; The compression ratio is effectively reduced over a full point by installing a cam with a much later intake close.

Power commander doesn't make the PC V anymore, and the PC6 only allows minor adjustments; anything beyond a small range of tuning, you have to be licensed and have a dyno to do more comprehensive adjustments. There's really no other options for controlling the fuel and ignition, hence why for EFI bikes we're going to be focusing on Harley's and Buell's from here on out.

No, that wasn't a tank slapper, that's called headshake. Headshake is due to gyroscopic procession (how a motorcycle stays upright going down the road), and this will be apparent under hard acceleration with all motorcycles that have enough power to pull the front wheel at higher speeds. Headshake is normal for high powered motorcycles, and is not the same thing as a tank slapper, which is complete loss of control of the steering due to violent, lock-to-lock bar shaking, which that was obviously not.

Not a good idea as these sportsters will tank slap when you get above 90-100 mph. Solve the handling problem before you do any power adders.

Not at all. It’s a cool build and all. I woulda went a little different with the color and some other stuff but it’s crazy how slow it still is in comparison to a liter bike. Cool build though

@mk4vws 2 completely different purposes. Litre bikes are typically 4 cylinder and high revving high horsepower with no torque. These are more for torque. It's not like he ran a crap ton of boost either. Compared to stock, it's an increase of around 60%. That's what makes it impressive. Comparing to a litre bike is like comparing a 69 hemi cuda to a zonda. All that being said, I'm not a harley guy, but mad respect for this build. Whatever you ride, as long as it gives you some smiles per miles, it's awesome. Keep the rubber side down brotha, and safe riding!
