One of the best scenes I think the 60s ever did, and I mean that, the music whilst basic has been stuck in my head for about 12 years now, the Daleks on the home turf, I can imagine a generation of viewers who lived through world war 2 and were always scared that the Nazis would invade and would be patrolling the streets had those same nightmares brought up here by this very scene

Seems like the plunges are being used as some sort of detectors, like satellite dishes or something. Maybe they're trying to pick up reble radio frequencies or something? Possibly even helps them navigate better given that the sensor globes probably only help in corridors and enclosed spaces. Interesting.

The scene than got me back then was the robomen (in tatty clothing and fitted with a helmet used to control them) driving a bunch of slaves working to dig the great pit (again folks in tatty ordinary clothing) with whips. Back then WW2 was still a real thing, a time when that kind of thing actually happened. The film blew it (IMHO) by blinging it all up, definitely 'made for kids', the TV series was a bit darker (like the time the Dr was thinking of clubbing an injured Thall to death because he was slowing them up in their escape). Of course back then he was just an inventor who had built a time machine he couldn't control properly not just another superhero (yawn).

As if WW2 isn't a real thing today. Though, we don't have collaborationist governments like that nowadays, I'll admit.
