Today there are more than 1.8 million Mapuche in Chile and about 200 thousand in Argentina and yet we are still struggling for our autonomy and self-determination. We consider ourselves neither Chilean nor Argentinean, but just Mapuche (‘the people of the land’). This video, made in 1937, refutes the vision portrayed by various Chilean historians, including the well known Sergio Villalobos (Chilean National History Award recipient) who habitually tell us that the term Mapuche has only been used by "Araucanians" since 1992. He claims that our real name is Araucanian, and because we interbred with European people, we no longer exist. Its show us just how credible the Mapuche history propagated by the Chileans is.
