In 2023 an ‘art action’ by the Chinese artist and curator Yique titled East London Socialist Core Values became a focus for intense international media interest. The action - which involved the covering over of several graffiti artworks on London’s Brick Lane with a white painted surface bearing red stencilled Chinese characters signifying core values of China’s ruling communist party - was inscribed with written comments and images by the public, many critical of China and its government, before being painted over by local council workers. Yique also became the subject of vitriolic online trolling. This short video by Yique shows the making of East London Socialist Core Values in the face of attempts by police and local officials to close it down. It includes comments by the artist Ai Weiwei, UNSW Judith Neilson Professor of Contemporary Art Paul Gladston and others highlighting the complex trans-cultural critical significances of the action and its reception by the public and international media. The video accompanies an exhibition of Yique’s work to be held in London later this year supported by the endowed funds of the UNSW Judith Neilson Chair of Contemporary Art.
