Documents and Lines: Reflecting on the Connections Between Art and Politics by Oksana Sarkisyan.
[15th of September]
Oksana Sarkisyan is an independent curator and art critic, curator of several experimental exhibitions, architectural theorist, and teacher. Her areas of scholarly interest and research include gender and post-colonial analysis, the history of contemporary Russian art, and the theory and practices of public representation.
Art of the contemporary era has its own language and history. The same structural foundations also define the nation-state. Due to these similarities, the borders between art and politics, and art and life, structurally correspond to the borders between states. Art, like politics, is a reflection of societal relations. The questions posed by Walter Benjamin in the 1920s about the connection between politics and art still resonate today, almost a century later, and provide productive coordinates for contemplating the prospects of further development in global society. The lecture “Documents and Lines” will guide to provide an overview of the content of the “Art Systems” course at the MARSH architectural school and is intended to serve as a starting point for a dialogue with the audience.
Language: Russian.
