09 dodge caliber goes into limp mode when transmission overheats

My fix for lime mode was changing the transmission fluid and two filter after the 3 drive I never had lime mode for over 2 months if the engine and trans still get hot you have to change the engine thermostat their are two one in the thermostat housing and one that attached to the block, once those change vehicle nor transmission should not get hot, reason for heat is a delay in thermostat opening, and reason for the whining is the transmission belt not shifting 7 quart of fluid do the fix… I own two caliber and those are the fix.

It's not a 10 mil bolt! It's 6 mil/1.25 thread. You are only talking about what socket for the head of the bolt and it could be very misleading to diy mechanics!

In the mountains of Montana, as I'm going up a steeper/longer hill, I also smell burning rubber. I have to limp in to a spot and use water to cool it anc carry on. I like the separation of the two cooling parts. Great video, thank you.

The one I'm working on is fresh start, codes cleared and p0218 and p0700 pops on almost immediately and in limp mode

Do you think the re flash would work to solve the original problem before you replaced the transmission? I've heard that dodge came out with software upgrades for the 2007 and 2011 models. Also, what did limp mode look like for you?

no, the re flash would not have worked, the fluid was burnt and really dark, also the codes were showing a faulty transmission. This cars limp mode was very limited acceleration with a max speed of 50-60 km. Also the transmission would overheat when pushed or driven hard. After changing the transmission it was reflashed, and ran good for awhile but did the same thing. Took it for a 2nd opinion and found out it was another faulty transmission, had it replaced and reflashed and is running fine so far. Will try post an update if anything goes wrong.

@@amandachavez4336 it didnt work out, the transmission was burnt to begin with, the 2nd transmission i installed was burnt as well, it worked for a bit after a reflash but just went into limp mode again. After a 2nd opinion and 3rd transmission change and flash, it is running fine so far. I recieved a reply and researched on the tipm and wiring in these calibers. Not sure if you can see the reply about the tipm, but it stated that the tipm gets wet and corrodes or shorts, either from a carwash or weather elements. Wiring under the drivers side fender and behind the bumper are exposed to elements as well.

Just had that on the freeway on the way home I hope I didint burn out the transmission 😵 but it seems to be a problem with all calibers, I already have extra cooling and it's still getting hot and it's a freaking pain. I am probably getting a different car 😆

Just change the engine thermostat u need to change both thermostat secondary and primary and engine and transmission won’t get hot, engine will stay warm not hot….if You have whining it’s the belt delaying shift so change both filter on the transmission and add 7 quart of fluid that will do the fix …I own two caliber it nothing electrical just need to do those servicing

I was told my 2007 Dodge Caliber transmission only held one quart thought this don't sound right rancot was winding let it sit for an hour drove in home 50 Mi an hour work fine

Can you use a used tcm from the same make and model or does it have to be reprogrammed or is it plug and play

There is a filter directly under the battery tray. AT cooling lines to be specific.

@@THEMOOSESWRENCHcode p1607 the coolant temperature sensor fixed limp mode my caliber was only running for 20 minutes yes exactly 20 minutes, and now thinking about it.in 20 minutes reaches the operating temperature and shuts off so the computer that was looking overheat that was my problem now I ran the car for 45 minutes and never shut off, I changed both of them but I think it was the one on the top one and the car was shutting off and it would not turn back on cause the battery was dead every time the car ran on idle for the 20 minutes, cause I think the alternator wasn't charging the battery so maybe the computer was shutting down the electrical system when the computer sees overheat. Now I have p0700 transmission issues but I think is easy to fix it the car runs fine

@@THEMOOSESWRENCH I’m driving an 09 caliber I’ve had for about 7 years now. I travel about 55 miles to work every day and have this same problem. I get the code after about 30 miles one way on the express way and limp the rest of the way there. I did put an external cooler on the car and changed filters and still doesn’t seem to hold. Wondering if getting the computer flashed has helped Anyone?

Recalibrate it so the cvt gear can shift faster some time they don't reach to the max gear , and cause heat, lots of tricks with these caliber, removing all thermostat can help too.

The caliber is running fine. Had to have the tcm flashed to the new/ used transmission, but other then that, its running fine. I did find out that if i would have used the tcm that ran with the new/used transmission, i would have had no problems. Not positive if it would configured to the ecm though, probably would have.

@@THEMOOSESWRENCH a cooler engine will last longer than a hot engine. I had a jeep cherokee v8 5.2 with no thermostat and last over 25 year and never overheat. Still going strong after I sold it. Of all the vehicle I had I was wonder how thing thing never over heat of all the vehicle I had so I went to upgrade the thermostat one day, just to find out their was none. Lol,

Haha awesome, I wonder if the same would go for a nissan cvt? I'm working on one right now and as soon as it gets hot it starts to act up, starts out and runs normal cold.

@@THEMOOSESWRENCH should work bc the cooling is continuous without the thermostat, good thing to do too, is drain out the oil and see if the right amount is in their and fill it back up.

@@THEMOOSESWRENCH That's surprising, some of those Calibers in those years come with Aisin transmissions. Do you know what kind of Trani it had? Was it a BG6 Aisin?

My caliber goes limp mode with the transmission heat light when I drive it long distance above 75, have cooling but still goes limp.

ya, this caliber was doing the same thing after the replacement, had to replace a 3rd time due to faulty transmission, and it is running fine now.

Dont run AC in the car, use regular air or heat with windows down. or if you do, have the air recirculating and make sure you always have that setting on

It's the transmission bypass valve

There is a cartridge-type filter behind the bypass valve. They can clog up.

Afther i changue the condensor put a afther marquet cooler change the trans temp sensor finally my trans guy told to take It down AND change those parts AND ITS been good so far.
