Tip - Spring Plate Retainers: A 2" long 3/4" pvc pipe on the bench, flip the valve over with spring plate onto pvc, then push. Retainers fall into pvc pipe with no worry of them flying across the room. A socket will also work. You're Welcome!

I just wanted to comment and thank you for the video. I took my 2016 Ram 2500 in for a water pump recall and they're saying I need $1,800 EGR cleaning parts and labor. Of course I declined and turned to KZbin. Watching your video makes it look insanely simple and gives me all the confidence I need. You're saving a lot of people a lot of money, $1,000 labor is what this dealer wanted plus parts. I liked and subscribed as well.

On that year you only need to replace the crankcase filter....egr valve and cooler cleaning is not needed. It was part of the 67,500 service on the older trucks but not the 2016....and that’s per the service info from Chrysler. I hate when I hear shops trying to upsale all 3 items when it doesn’t apply to the year they own. It’s like a rubber stamp that they use on all year models when selling services.....lets me know they are not checking to see what’s recommend for each vehicle. Been thinking about doing a video about that topic.....just not sure what to call it yet. I need a short title.

Hey Dave, first, thank you for the videos. Secondly, this is the second time I did this & this time I used Simple Green instead of the EGR cleaning fluid from Mopar. If anything, I think it maybe did a better job. Plus instead of the fill up & let it sit at an angle & such, I had plenty of fluid to just immerse it in a small Rubbermaid storage box. Slosh it around, work the valve, run a brush around and through it, etc.

while hitting a mountain carrying 3 cars on I84 east bound. my truck began to overheat and began spitting coolant out of the overflow hole in the reservoir. as i made it to my destination of east windsor ct. i assumed the weight may have caused strain to my engine. this is my daily route. I've never had a problem with my truck in this area. however, returning from my destination heading directly to the dealer in carmel ny. i experienced the same issue. constant over heating. i did make it to the dealer. i later received a call from the dealer saying my EGR valve was blown. i was told the price to repair was 2500 bux. smh. i am no technician, but thanks to your video i know what i am telling the dealer this monday 8/1/16. thanks again to you. keep the videos coming i really appreciate what you do
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 8 жыл бұрын
What they probably mean is that the EGR cooler is bad not the valve. The coolant can cause an overheat that you.cant see externally. It either steam cleans the tube between the cooler and egr valve or cause the soot in the tube to turn to an oil mess due to the antifreeze mixing with the soot.

I just got a quote of over $2k for the job. Is this a necessary task? I bought the 2016 a year ago and have only driven it $600 miles. I got no service records on it but dealer does not see a record of that ever being done. It's about 101,000 miles now and this is my first ever experience with a dealer. I use TerraClean tool and products to clean the entire system in about 1.5 hours. I do not have to remove the valve, I hook in at the temp sensor, remove the egr actuator, and replace it with a thumb screw plate so I can open and close the valve. The system cleans the intake, grid heater and the combustion chamber,egr, egr cooler, turbo, and dpf. Basically everything "tip to tailpipe" Excellent video however, life would have been easier 9 yrs ago with TerraClean though

Dave, what about the solenoid itself. Can that be cleaned at the mechanical portion? I have a 2014 that isn't supposed to be cleaned, but I've had CEL Code P0402 "Excessive Flow" at EGR valve. I would like to clean the valve and replace the solenoid but they only come with valve and solenoid at $1100! CEL went away and has not returned. Now I have a P20E8 "reductant pressure too low" so looks like I need to clean the DEF injector. Man these emissions are a drag! Thank you for your help with the video's, we appreciate you! Mike

Thank you so much for this video. Just had a code pop up on a 2009 motor home with the 6.7 Cummins and it was related to the EGR valve. Only 26k miles on the engine, and just over 200 hours of idle so I'm not sure why it got so sticky but I pulled it out, used purple power in the valve and let it soak for a few hours. Cleaned it up and popped it back in the engine and voila, no more code. Good thing, since we are just 2 days away from a 2000 mile road trip. Saved me at least a grand. Only one note: To the guy at Cummins who decided it'd be a great idea to paint the entire engine red, including the banjo bolt threads and the screw heads holding the EGR actuator on, fuuuuuuck you. I spent so much time removing paint in the phillips head just to be able to remove the screws. Had to brush the banjo bolt threads to remove paint and use More than half my time disassembling was dealing with that shit. Nice that Chrysler didn't do that on the Rams.

your channel is great! I have a 2015 ram diesel that when I started to change fuel filters & prime them I followed the directions by turning key off & then on several times. Well when I went to start truck after it didn't start up right away, I had to shut off then try again, well it ran but now I am getting really bad gas milage, and Idel speed is up almost 1500. Is one or more injectors clogged & or EGR valve stuck, where do I start trouble shooting. Thanks

I have never cleaned my 2014 with 123k miles. I have hesitation and now a rough low idle on occaision when coming to a stop idle surges up over and over again trying not to die. I am going to try this to see if it fixes the problem. Hope I dont have to replace the cooler. The recomended maintenance calls to clean the cooler too but that is a ton of work and figure I will wait until I have no other choice

this video saved me over 300.00...the dealership wanted to charge me 400...I got the Mopar cleaner and gaskets from a dodge dealership for about 40.00....they wanted to charge me 780.00 for the 67,500 mile checkup...400 to clean the egr valve and 250.00 to replace the crankcase filter...I got the filter from a Ford dealership who charged about 160.00 and I did it myself after watching another guy's video here...I found the filter for 70.00 on amazon but go back to work for a month and want everything done at the same time....luckily by my next 60k miles I will b over my 100k and am definitely doing the deletes....what do u recommend for deleting the crankcase filter as I just recently found out about it and KZbin mostly talks about the egr and dpf deletes....ford didn't even know cummins had it lol

The perform service for the egr system came up, from what i understand that is a set warning based on kms put on the truck what ive also been told is just because that code came up doesn't necessarily mean it needs to be cleaned, is there anyway i can check if its bad without removing the egr to see if it needs to be cleaned,its a $1000 service if there is a way i can put it off until my warranty is up and i can delete i would much rather take that route .

Truck= Ram 3500 2008 6.7L, I have asked same q in another video where I missed the vehicle info. Thank you REPLY

Great instructional Video, Thanks. My Question is how far past the 67500 service would be considered "safe" as I am 1500 mile from home when light came on. Ordered the parts but wish to do service at home.

2018 ram 3500 with 67700 miles on it. Dealer is telling me I need the 67500 service. My truck just started showing the perform service in my messages....what service is needed? Is it just this egr cleaning? Should I just pay the 800 dollars and have the dealer do it since I can just write it off as repair maintenance on my taxes? Your recommendation please...i value your opinion. Thank you.

Hello there. I got an answer from Motorcity when I asked him if my 2017 Dodge Ram needed EGR Cleaning and he told me models 17 and up are not necessary but just the old models. I replaced my CCV only and that’s all. Did you do your EGR already? Maybe dealer wants to make money out of people.

not tested to this video, but could you do a video about how to change the fron diff seal where the front axel goes into the diff. I have a leak there. also maybe a video about how to grease the fitting on the u joint on the front axel on the side where it goes into the transfer case. there is a sticker under the hood that says you should grease this point at every oil change. thanks!

I too have seen that sticker about greasing the front driveshaft......do you know that to this date I haven't found one with grease fittings lol. Maybe its just me. Surely there have to be some out there inorder for there to be a sticker. Don't forget to subscribe if you haven't already.

if this egr valve sticks can it cause regen issue with the dpf ?...I just ran into a dpf filling up to 80 now 90% and regen constantly staying a on issue. only code present the week prior and until the dpf issue was p242 which I replaced that temp sensor even got it out without having to swear and it appears to be gone but P1451 dpf performance and dpf at 90% still exist after 30 miles of driving ...this is the first time in 60k of me owning the truck to have the dpf full message ...I'm just curious if the egr could be stuck causing this or bad temp sensor on the egr ...obviously it could be a few issues and either way i'll be pulling the egr possibly the entire valve and cooler to flush entire system ,but I'm just curious if my thoughts on the egr causing excessive soot /regen issue is causing the dpf to fill...I guess the bad temp sensor couuld have caused it and I just have not driven enough to clean it...lol...amybe some resistors in the right spots and the entire system from turbo back could "fall off" .

What are the symptoms of a dirty EGR system? My truck surges badly while accelerating in the 1500 to 2k rpm range, with a steady throttle and at around 20 to 40 mph. Also Surges like its running out of fuel at hiway cruise speeds like 70. Dealer says its the egr sytem cleaing that will cure it

I would recommending getting a flash light and inspect all things exhaust, especially around the engine and look for "soot". An exhaust leak under the hood can cause alot of smells and at the same time make sure no obvious fuel leaks incase. I see manifold gaskets leak from time to time. Thanks for watching and make sure to subscribe.

Can egr cleaner be introduced via the crankcase vent tube to clean the fins in the exhaust side of the turbo?
@Funkamedic
@Funkamedic 9 жыл бұрын
thanks for this video, mine is going to need to be done in less than 10k miles. I heard if you run the exhaust break all the time it keeps the egr valve a bit cleaner, is this true?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 9 жыл бұрын
+Funkamedic I don't know about that. My take on the exhaust break is to keep the turbo actuator moving so that it has a better chance of not sticking over time. Then again each time you turn the key on the actuator moves and performs a self test

@@MotorCityMechanic You have no idea how thankful I am for you and these videos. Today I went to take my truck in (75k miles) for an unrelated problem, and they told me I needed this EGR service done. They said it was $1750 plus $200 more for the CCV. (Since I had done the CCV @ 67.5k like my dash indicator said, I could avoid doing the $200 CCV. I told them to go through with the EGR service, but luckily caught your videos when I got home in time to stop them. Even if the EGR was required for my 2015, I learned from your videos that that price was way too much. And now that you sent me this second video link, everything is perfectly clear. I am going to do all my Christmas shopping this year with that amazon link you said to use to support you. You Rock! You just saved me $1750!

Have a P0489 code for a 2008 2500 6.7 Dodge Ram. Removed vavle assembly and found the internals moving freely, no sticking or drag noted; cleaned anyway. Hooked up vavle motor / solenoid and turned ignition on and off while noting travel of "plunger". Had previously noted the "plunger" could be moved or dragged to various lengths. Is this normal or should it be permanently fixed? I have spent the better part of the afternoon attempting to locate this motor part number 5254657 / K5T70286. Various sources list the motor but say it is no longer available!!! Numerous sources list other motor / solenoid but on close examination found to be missing one of eight contacts. Can you recommend a source? Buying the whole assembly makes no sense to me. And just so you know I enjoy your videos, crisp and to the point with a presentation that say's "you can do this". You are an excellent instructor. No idle flattery! If you ever have a aircraft question contact me, it what I do.
