I saw Russell Martin pitch once and idk how he got to pitch either is this something they just do once in a blue moon for entertainment or something and in this case how did they let him pitch I could see they went 16th inning and why did they risk losing putting him on unless they wanted to?

Usually it only happens when a team is way behind. In the case you mentioned, when the game went 16 innings, they decided they’d rather let a position player pitch than burn a pitcher.
