“Dodie Clark (artistically stylized as simply Dodie) is a British singer/songwriter and vlogger known for her bittersweet acoustic romance songs and her creative online activity. She became widely known during her late teens for documenting her life on KZbin, expressing herself artistically through acting and performing. A big part of this was her songwriting, which led to Dodie becoming prominently known for her use of the baritone ukulele and her original songs about love, loss, and yearning.
(…)
Her increasing popularity eventually gave way to live performances around the country, ultimately landing her a spot on the Transatlantic Tour, which found her performing in the U.S. alongside fellow KZbin stars Jon "Paint" Cozart, Rusty Clanton, and Tess Violet. She returned in 2017 with her second release, You. The EP boasted a more tender and somber sound palette than its predecessor, with use of resonant violas, introspective lyrics, and melancholy piano.” - All Music, Rob Wacey

♪ lyrics ♪
Tell me again about how it hurts
Being awfully loud for an introvert
Get out of my room
Smile wiped clean
Isn't it weird to be so mean?
I'm guessing that I've grown horns
I guess I'm human no more
I can tell I've rotted in your brain
Oh, how easily passion twists
You think I'm a crazy bitch
I craft my words to fit your head
'Cause no one listens to the dead
So maybe I will talk to you
The only way I know how to
Mmm, mmm, I've said my speech
Mmm, mmm, through sharpened teeth
You break the rules and spikes grow from your skin
Please let the devil in
A meter apart
You blankly stare
We shout in our heads
Are you still in there?
Well this ends bad, then
We knew it would
So we won't eat our words
'Cause they don't taste good
I'm guessing that I've grown horns
I guess I'm human no more
I can tell I've rotted in your brain
Oh, how easily passion twists
You think I'm a crazy bitch
A thousand words are left unsaid
'Cause no one listens to the dead
So maybe I will talk to you
The only way I know how to
Mmm, mmm, I've said my speech
Mmm, mmm, through sharpened teeth
You break the rules and spikes grow from your skin
Oh
I think it might be worth a try
Oh
Am I ready to let this die?
Mmm, mmm, a monster's here
Mmm, mmm, you plug your ears
But hey, you might just listen to it soon
Please let the devil in
(We won't eat our words / They don't taste so good)
(You've said your speech through sharpened teeth)
Look, I know that I've seen this before
High and mighty, at the top of your list
Adoring every move, now my rank is sinking
But we're both guilty of black or white thinking
And through my red eyes, you look pale
All of your scars now looking more like scales
Two ugly creatures, two sinister preachers
Blind to the past, like a couple of monsters;
Just a couple of monsters!
So maybe I will talk to you
The only way I know how to
Mmm, mmm, you’ve said your speech
Mmm, mmm, through sharpened teeth
You break the rules and spikes grow from your skin
Oh
I think it might be worth a try
Oh
Am I ready to let this die?
Mmm, mmm, a monster's here
Mmm, mmm, you plug your ears
But hey, you might just listen to it soon
Please let the devil in
(We won't eat our words)
(They don't taste so good)

I really relate to this song because I interpreted it as changing yourself in order to appeal to others. I'm a relatively quiet person but I come off as an extravert because I have this second persona I throw onto myself that's really out there in order to make sure I have friends and people notice me so I don't slip into the background (because "no one listens to the dead") I met someone recently who's the same as me in that regard. We both know we're lying to eachother's faces. It's interesting to watch.

As someone who just got out of a bad relationship, I feel like this song is about a love gone sour. "I can tell I've rotted in your brain" as me and my ex started to fight, I became gross in his head. All the yelling and arguing made me turn into a monster in his eyes, when in reality I was just trying to stand up for myself. "How easily passion twists you think I'm a crazy bitch" toward the very end we got into nasty fights. I suspected cheating, and when I lashed out and he snapped back to defend himself he said I was crazy and dramatic and a bitch. "I guess I'll talk to you the only way i know how to" when the love was withering between us, sometimes I felt like the only way I could get him to speak to me and pay attention was by yelling or getting upset. Of course, in the end that only made things worse, but at the time, it's the only time he'd pay attention to me. Lastly "two ugly creatures, blind to the past like a couple of monsters" is simply as it says, blind to the past. For the first year and a half it was a dream, we had so many good times and laughs and love and I truly believed we could make it work, but something changed in him one day and he no longer wanted to be with me. The more I pleaded with him to stay, the more monstrous I turned in his eyes. I blinded him to the past good times with my panic and my terrified meltdowns. In the end, I turned into a monster trying to save something and ended up making it worse for good. He also turned into a monster by giving into that aggression and doing horrible things. Two people who once took on the world in a beautiful spiral of love turned into hideous scaly monsters fighting eachother until we snapped. And I wish every single day that I could go back and fix the moment that all our scars turned into scales.... at least.. that's how I feel about this song...

@SociallyAwkwardSarah I dont think you turned into a monster in the end, please dont be too hard with yourself! ❤ i think the song is also about toxic relationships.. In these you are thinking in the end that you are bad and a "monster", that its your fault, just because you've stand up for yourself. Its not your fault and its absolutely okay and allowed! Be proud of yourself that you've stand up for yourself! All Love ❤

this is such a good song, and I wish I didn't have such negative memories about it. I genuinely love the way it's been written, sung, created. I loved it for a -long- time, and I've been trying to listen to it more so I wont have panic attacks whenever it comes on. I can't state how much I absolutely adore Dodie, and how much it pains me to say that her music brings me stress. And I also am now realizing this is a youtube comment section, and I am a Dumb Bitch.

I think it's what most other people have been interpreting it as: love gone sour, two people who genuinely loved each other demonizing each other more and more until they see each other as monsters. "I can tell I've rotted in your brain" is a clear way of expressing that. Blah blah, read the other comments if you want an idea of this. But unlike the others, I really don't think it serves as an ending to their relationship. This whole song is the emotional processing of their relationship going bad, from the point of view of one of its participants. She realizes very quickly that in the other person's view, she's become a monster. And, at first she's bitter about that. But then she realizes something important: she sees the other person as a monster too. She understands where they're coming from in characterizing her that way, and therefore can forgive them for that. It always felt to me like "just a couple a monsters" is a revelation, where she realizes how ridiculous their demonization of each other is. And from that, she recognizes that (assuming the other person wants to maintain the relationship as much as she wants to "am I ready to let this die?") they have to start healing. And in my interpretation, they do heal :)

"GET OUT OF MY ROOM!" Story of my life
@bruh6237
@bruh6237 4 жыл бұрын
I dont know if this is what the song is actually about, but this is my interpretation because of how i relate to it. The first parts, “being awfully loud for an introvert. get out of my room, smile wiped clean. Isn’t it weird, to be so mean?” I relate to a lot, it describes perfectly how it feels to be an introverted person and have hyperactive feelings. I get very easily upset, even when i dont want to and i feel absolutely horrible afterwards and not knowing why I’m acting this way. The next lines, 0:24 - 0:38 makes me think of how i overthink things, or assume people hate me i.e “i can tell ive rotted in your brain” “you think im a crazy bitch” and how i see myself as a bad person/“monster” for acting out or being hypersensitive i.e “im guessing that ive grown horns, i guess im human no more” The line “i craft my words to fit your head cause no one listens to the dead” makes me think of me walking on eggshells or saying specific things because im afraid if i say the wrong thing people wont like me anymore? But i dunno, thats just how I interpreted it.

This song reminds me of the relationship between me and my dad My dad thinks I’m a very attitudey and ungrateful child when I do more than what he thinks I do. I am more than lazy, I try my damndest. And he has been getting more aggressive towards me, whenever I try to bite back at him he thinks I’m a monster. I rarely speak up for myself and I never yell. I don’t mention my feelings for a reason. He treats me as if I’m some maid or a service dog. But we are both guilty of being monsters and I want to send this song to him so badly

I used to listen to this when I was like, 14-15 and cry myself to sleep. My mom and I were monsters. She tried so hard to mold me into one, to bite and scratch and make me just as hateful as she was. I was for a while. I've hurt people I care about so deeply and I can never take those words and actions back. All because I so desperately wanted her to just. Like me. I tried to have so many talks with her and make it better. Nothing helped. She still bit me. But I'm away from her now. I woke up. I may not be able to ever fully undo my actions, but i can try, and I can do better moving forward. Which is more than she can say for herself. So I hope i"m doing something right.
