I like the direction you put into your commentary. I think that those who love every part of making music into something worth listening to got sick of the garbage noise and were searching for real. That’s why the Drake and Kendrick grabbed everyone’s attention and why Kendrick blew up. We wanted fresh, real astrstry
@Zinetha2 күн бұрын
Agreed. No matter the genre, hit songs come and go, but true art is timeless and will sound just as good decades later as it did today.

I think Doechii is a fantastic, well rounded artist. Because she speaks speaks to real shit in her lyrics, a lot of folks want to malign her as Harriet Tubman music but personally I see activism AND party in her music, and that is what a lot of people I think can really connect with. I'm glad to see more artists like her getting their flowers.
@lotusinn32 күн бұрын
Also the “Harriet Tubman music” malign is so stupid considering the what the alternative often is. Commentary and artistry combined shouldn’t be considered substandard.
@prodtre2 күн бұрын
@@lotusinn3 funniest thing is the people saying that dont realize without that quote on quote "harriet tubman music" the artist they listen to most likely wouldn't exist. what you said about activism and party both being in her music also applies to someone like kendrick too when they call his stuff "protest music". hiphop has always been that way besides just the party stuff, their is equal amount of activism as much of the bops and party stuff. problem is anyone who knows even a small amount about hiphop know that isnt what hiphop was built off of. you can not like it, but if you cant respect it you just dont respect hiphop at all. i for one can care less about someone's input who thinks that ignorantly, if you think hiphop is just 808s, memes, blowing up on tiktok, and sales numbers then you lost the plot its simple as that.

Love that Doechii is getting more shine. She's great. I remember one of my favorite songs as a kid was from Nas - I Can. I had to be 8 at the time. But I thought all of hiphop was that inspiring. It made me sad when i realized it wasnt all that way. Im so glad to see how people are requesting more from the genre of rap/hiphop than has been given in recent years. Happy New Year!!! 🎉🎉🎉

Using Harriet Tubman as a roast is brazy. People who don’t like creative or deep hip hop should just be quiet and got bumped their dusty Trinidad James album and let us be. Even gangsta rap of the 90s had bars and social messages.

Thanks for informing me! I’m catching up on all things Doechii and am still diving into her world so it’s good to have this context. You’re right that is a wild and broad ass brush to paint her with and try to dismiss her message. Racially charged as well. But it’s not a new trend unfortunately. This always happens to any rap that’s deemed too “conscious”. Same sh*t different day I guess. I’ll keep fighting and trying to spread the message of consciousness over here. 2025 is going to be a battle and I’m ready for it

I agree. What you say reminds me of two powerful artists. One makes art that invites viewers/listeners to their and their people’s culture. And for their people, to walk in pride of their culture. They lift people up with their projects. They have great numbers but don’t do it for the numbers. Then the other, another great artist but not a competitor to the first I mentioned when it comes to the art. But people like to compare the two because of numbers. They hold the latter up to such high esteem solely because of numbers and profits. But again, the art, the impact. There is no comparison. Love your & Deochii’s take

Thank you for this vid. I feel like we're swimming upstream when it comes to artistic and conscience music in hip hop. Being an old school head, I haven't felt this good about the Hip Hop genre since the 90's. I grew up on conscience rap from the likes of Public Enemy, KRS-One, X-Clan, and the list goes on. Not to mention the artists that stirred sh** up like Ice Cube and Nas. I grew up in a time where your pen meant something. For me, ever since the turn of the century, Hip Hop has been dumbed up and watered down. However, little did I know, there was always a light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks to Kendrick, J-Cole, Tyler the Creator, and now Doechii (but mainly K-Dot), I'm finding myself appreciating the genre more than I had in years. As Doechii eloquently stated, don't let these opps create the narrative that uplifting Black culture is wack, stupid, and terrible music. The worst line from the rap beef was when Drake said that Kendrick was rapping like he was trying to free the slaves. That got under my skin. Hip Hop is Black culture for the culture. Don't lose your soul trying to appease the masses. Keep that sh** rooted in the culture, and it will manifest itself in the music. One love.

I think you are great Knox. There's a reason I've been consistently watching your channel for 5 years now, since m2bmb. Which is probably a record for my attention. You put in 10 times the work most other reactors do. You bring something more than entertainment, and thats a lot of knowledge. Its easy for someone to hit play and listen, comment on a few things in the song and throw it up on the internet, and I guess a lot of people like that overreacting stuff. I like that you're honestly treating this like a college course, which i have thought for a while could be a possibility. I mean, if there's pansy-queer theory, or whatever, then why not hip-hop theory? I've been saying this for a while.

Point well made Knox. Hip hop is history (and now becoming even more herstory too), change, struggle, drama and soul. Let’s not as fans of the genre allow Rap to be “all about the money”, let’s support those who stand for the depth and the “Word”. Kat Williams spoke a lot of truth, when money does all the talking it’s time to do the walking - back to the roots and culture and away from the capitalistic boast!

Rhapsody and Doechii are great lyricists and story tellers! Snow the Product is another fantastic female MC!! The issue I see with the music industry and most youngsters that like "rap" is that they don't like and appreciate real, true hip hop music! Rhapsody, Doechii and Snow The Product make real hip hop music but most don't/won't appreciate them! They'll rather listen to Nicki Minaj, Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion, as far as the females rappers are concern! We got rid of Iggy Azalea years ago! It's time to get rid of the remaining, wack, lame female rappers in the game!! "Alligator Bites Never Heal!" is a great mix-tape! She came out with a mix tape in 2022 and another one in 2024! Us, true, real, hip hop heads will always love the real artform! Great video, Knox!!

There's an image in female hip-hop that sells and both artists and fans partake in it because it's mainstream and it gives money. I agree 100% with you, artists like Doechii, Rapsody, Little Simz, etc., fly under the radar because they act and put out music that folks only consider cold/digestable/acceptable from male rappers. It's such a pity because we're all humans, we all go through hardships, and have complex thoughts and ideas that we can put out into art. We need to keep pushing these artists who still hold true love and care for the craft
