YourProduceGuy is talking pineapples today. In my when is it ripe pineapple video that you can see here • WHEN IS IT RIPE? PINEA... there has been a lot of discussion about whether pineapples ripen. So I've put together a little experiment. Enjoy!

Lay them sideways so moisture doesn't mold on the bottom .. look for pineapples with small growth on top .. the bigger the vegetive growth is the less fruit flavor and sweetness they will be regardless of color . Pick 3 ripe good ones from a store and then taste the one with the smallest plant top and u will see it tastes the best out of the 3 😁

Thanks for encouragement and the compliment! I'm working on a series of healthy snack-foods/meals for January. This Saturday will be the first installment of that, so keep an eye out. We will get more views!

Thank you for sharing your experiment! I saw in another video someone placed a damp towel under the top of pineapple where the stem is removed to retain moisture. Try that to see if it would ripen even more than just placing it upside down without damp towel!

I've been watching food and cooking videos for years on youtube and I can't believe I only found your channel today! Excited to spend the next few days going through your vids. I would very much enjoy a series on mushroom picking and mushroom identification whether with you or a partner of yours who knows more on the subject. I plan on watching your morel hunt video later! Happy New Year. You earned yourself a subscriber.

Well, if I ever bought a green pineapple, then I'll try to make it happen in more than a week so that it ripens to a yellow from the bottom up. Using experimental things are a science. Whether it is super green, I would recommend let's say 2 weeks. All we have to do is set it out on The couch or we can set it out in the dining table. After we set it out on the couch or our dining table, now let the sugar do it's thing to make it more yellow. After a week or 2, we now have a successful yellow colored pineapple. Thank you.

You are so right Raymond. I was at the Dole Plantation in Hawaii 2 years ago, and they said it's as ripe as it's going to get when it's picked. I knew they were wrong.

I add some sugar after i cut it up and i do the same with strawberries if they are not sweet. That added sugar makes a nice juice with the fruit.

It possibly could have been. Good experiment but it could use a little improvement. 1) Cut the pineapple vertically so the color can be viewed from top to bottom, 2) buy an unripened pineapple on day 7 (test day) to use as the control, and 3) taste a piece from the middle or closer to where the ripening process seems to have been occurring

Gary Panther Good suggestions. I wish I had cut the fruit vertically. I was looking to go to the least ripe part of the fruit for the comparison. My keeping a green one under refrigeration from the same batch, I was trying to keep everything equal. Even all green ones can have varying degrees of sweetness. Still, those were excellent suggestions. Thanks for the input.

i have done about 5 tests even wth unripe pineapples i find the best way is to keep the crown on and keep it a warm dry place with about 25 degrees temeperature and turn it up side down on the 4th day

Thanks for sharing. Also...do you think we sometimes get fooled when we are told Pineapples are "Golden Pineapples"? They are the only kind we buy because we love the deep and sweet flavor. Last week we noticed the nice gold color inside was missing...then also the delicious taste/sweetness was missing. How can I avoid that in the future? Thanks so much.

Trust your nose. Your nose can tell you just about everything that you need to know about a ripe Pineapple. If it smells like a Pineapple, it should be good. If you pick up a moldy sort of smell, you should steer clear. If it's not putting off any smell, it's either because it is refrigerated and you can't smell it or it's not ready. Occasionally, you may get a 'trojan horse' that looks good outside but is not what it should be inside. Sometimes, that just happens. Not an exact science. If that happens, return it to your grocer for a better one or money back.

Would it help it ripen if you put the pineapple in a brown paper bag with a banana? It's a technique I've found helpful in ripening many things.

My partner and I have grown many pineapples from the tops we've cut off pineapples from the store. Odd factoid: Getting new pineapples from those tops only happened when we planted the tops in terracotta clay pots or plastic pots of that color. The tops we planted in black plastic pots never fruited but grew well. The tops we planted in the garden grew fairly well but never fruited. We did have one in a clay pot that did extremely well, but the pot was white. (this was our first foray into trying to grow them) We harvested three beautiful pineapples from that one before it died. When I dumped the pot out I realized it was originally terracotta clay colored and not cement as we had thought. LOL I'm still puzzled about the plants seeming to have a preference for the color of the pots. They were all put in the same area of the patio except for our last one which ended up being moved from east sun to west sun after the fruit set. It ended up frozen in time, so to speak. The fruit never grew from the half size it was at the moment of being moved, although the fruit tasted okay if a bit overripe.

I know i'm like... REALLY late on the ball as a new subscriber, but i was kind of confused as to why you said the fruit would ripen from the bottom up, then proceeded to try eating the fruit from the top..? Just curious if that might have affected the taste at all as far as the upside down fruit was concerned..?

I would guess that your suggestion with the bag and banana would help speed the Pineapple along.

Putting an apple in a paper bag will speed up the ripening process faster as it produces more ethylene gas. Always great to watch your videos, they're very informative.

Also, as it ripens, the core becomes softer until it reaches the point where it’s as soft, sweet and juicy as the rest of the pineapple, also less acidic.

You're right, it would've been better if he bought 4 and ate 1 in the beginning. If you eat many pineapples, you know that when they look as green as they did in the beginning, they are not very good.

Aboslutely not true!. What is going on is the fermentation of the sugars. Pineapples do not ripen after they are picked.

***** Hmmm, that depends. Ingesting acidic foods can be a good thing particularly as we age. There is a tendency for one's digestive system to produce less hydrochloric acid over time, and hence digesting foods can become more difficult. This is exactly why apple cider vinegar is often recommended for the elderly to supplement low gastric acid production.
