To get the most out of a race cam shaft, we normally recommend them on builds over 260bhp. But a few of you have asked what difference they would make for a lower powered build and if it is worth the extra cost 🤔
So tuner Tom has brought in his track toy for a little test to see once and for all how much the cam will gain 💪

You are getting really good at talking to people through the camera, so you don't have to worry about how you word things because it comes naturally - you can chat. There is only one 'ping' in your delivery so far, which is a word that you use to fill when you cannot think of a new word, and this word that you use is 'Obviously'. This is the only word that you need to keep in your mind when you talk, and when it comes up take a second have a breath and then choose another word. (I'm a consultant delivering to groups and I constantly have to be conscious of using wide and phrases such as "Like" "You know" "Do you know what I mean" etc etc because over time new points will pop up). Great work you are all doing to educate us all on Diesel Power. At some point I would like to make an Ultralight A2 using the cast 1.2 tdi block and send it to you guys with an open cheque.

Definitely,there could be 5-10 more hp and we wouldnt have found out

We all know Diesel Carburetor don't follow directions on maps. The only free mod worth doing: randomly rotating the unit injector-pumps to retard/advance timing followed by no re-setting them after changing cam-followers, buckets and cam according to workshop manual. So no map could make them run at expected timing, flow, duration, smoke, exhaust temps or reliability... the more random parts and money spent the better...No questions asked.

It's not all about outright power. Making the curve better is often more useful. Besides as they say it's worth doing if you're replacing a worn cam but, the implication is, not if your existing cam is fine.

Don't forget you get extra smokes and your ECU with a suboptimal map for free.

A work of art is the PD engine 😍 Am I right in saying if it wasn’t for the PD, Darkside developments wouldn’t exist ? I’m proud to be an owner of a 21 year old ATD 100 (not 100 tho 😜 )

Race cam is a silly name. I mean theirs tons of different kinds of racing and for most of them you'd run different cam profiles. The term race cam just isn't very telling.

On the VEP engines, it is common to swap the camshaft for an SDI one from the scrapyard. It is supposed to give you a bit more top end power at the cost of losing some of the very low range power.

1.9TDi with 1.9SDi cams, 1.8T 20v with 1.8 n/a 20v cams etc etc. Maybe not a biggest difference in teams of power, but always Youre on +. N/A has higher duration and lift on their cams so they allow a better flowing engine.

Reyt then, what's turbo boost with this dyno session? Darkside uk (Ryan Boss) has been telling us for decades 1.9tdi stock head stops flowing at 260-270hp. That's just gtb220vk + bigger nozzle power rate. And so 272-9.8 cam and bigger valves needed to go 290hp. Darkside golf and tt rocket race cars fit 2260 turbo providing spool from low revs. That's perfect street tune too. But darkside uk catalogue shows gtb2566vk to 350hp and drag arosa with gtd2872vrk to 450hp and 6000 rpm with 280-10.5, bigger valves and professional head port/polish. What comes out is totally different 2.0tdi monster engine. Maybe gtd2872vrk with stock head on asz/arl engine bottom ends to 5000rpm. What power/torque can be expected?
